When the Squadron learned the team would not host Pride nights, Squadron leaders decided in 2014 that we would host Pride instead. We wanted everyone to know they were welcome in our section—and that, as an independent supporters group, we are not beholden to values that are antithetical to ours.
Internet news clippings:

First one by Lindsay Gibbs (June 7, 2017) for ThinkProgress. Title: “The Washington Spirit won’t hold a Pride Night, so its fans are holding one instead.” Subheading: “We want everybody to know they’re welcome in our section”

Second one by Meg Linehan (July 13, 2020) for NYTimes. “For many seasons, the Washington Spirit refused to have Pride Nights, and was the only club to not publicly celebrate the 2015 Supreme Court decision to guarantee same-sex marriage as a right nationwide.
The Spirit eventually went through its own culture change, in part thanks to new ownership and a new head coach, but also thanks to the constant and clear messaging from the Spirit Squadron, the Washington supporters group. On July 20th, the team will hold a panel titled,
"The Intersection of Race, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity."”three photos of squadron members wearing pride gear and holding pride signs

Welcome to the Stories Behind the Squad - Part Two: Squadron Pride Fans know that Washington Spirit Pride Nights are the best games of the season. But that wasn’t always the case - former Spirit ownership refused to host a Pride match prior to 2019.

The first truly memorable moment arrives thanks to the banner heard around the league. The brainchild of Rose Room co-founder and Squadron member Douglas Reyes-Ceron, the banner was plain and succinct:

Sell the team, SteveUltimately we concluded that continuing as normal would communicate complacency. In the statement, we made our position clear: until new ownership publicly committed to creating a safe environment for players and staff, and established a legitimate vetting process for leadership positions, we would withhold the energy and labor that supporters groups routinely provide for free.Against the backdrop of one of the most chaotic and painful seasons in league history,
the Spirit win the NWSL Championship. The championship never felt separate from everything that happened before it. In many ways, it felt inseparable from the players’ refusal to break under the weight of it all.

A Team of Destiny in every sense.

Five years ago, the tumultuous events from the Spirit’s 2021 championship season began unfolding. Part One is a retrospective from Angie about her time as Squadron President during this period. The full blog post is available at the link in our bio. TW: references to SA and racism uncovered in NWSL.
I was a hospital worker still reeling from the impact of Covid 19, with absolutely no PR background and a very narrow experience in crisis management. Suddenly I’m at the forefront of tailoring the response from the oldest and largest of the Spirit supporters groups that would satisfy my own feelings of morality, match the expectations of those who chose me to lead them, and, most importantly, l amplify the players’ voices.

It has been one year since the federal government deployed the national guard to DC under the guise of a “crime emergency” despite violent crime in DC hitting a 30-year low. It quickly became clear that the federal takeover was, in part, intended to intimidate, harass, and arrest immigrants.

#TransPeopleBelong 🏳️‍⚧️
Today, we reaffirm our support for transgender athletes and transgender members of our community.

Sports unite us and should always be a place of belonging. We reject efforts that invite greater scrutiny of athletes’ bodies, identities, and private medical information. These measures will not only single out a vulnerable population; they risk creating an environment in which all athletes—especially women and girls—face invasive questioning, inspections, and undue burdens.

We stand with transgender athletes and everyone who believes sports are strongest when they are built on dignity and respect.

This Trans Day of Visibility, we’re celebrating Kumi Yokoyama, a champion and history-maker in more ways than one. Thank you, Kumi, for your time with the Spirit and for living your truth! Trans people belong everywhere, on and off the pitch.
Trans People Belong in View
Kumi Yokoyama (he/they)
For Trans Day of Visibility we’re highlighting the accomplishments of famous athletes. Their accomplishments aon and off the field of play deserve to be celebrated. They are competitors, they are our teammates, and they are strong. We hope that these visible athletes remind us that sports and athleticism are important to the whole trans community. Their fight, grit, and determination enrich us all. Today we say Trans Athletes Belong. The Spirit Squadron and Rose Room Collective are sharing the story of Kumi Yokoyama, a dynamic Japanese forward known for his creativity, technical precision, and attacking flair. Kumi made 12 appearance in two seasons with the Washington Spirit and was part of the 2021 Championship team. Beyond their on-field impact, Yokoyama has also been an influential figure off the pitch. In June 2021, Kumi came out as a transgender man in an interview with fellow Nadeshiko striker Yuki Nagasato.

“[Canadian midfielder Quinn] wore a [sweatshirt] that said ‘Protect Trans Kids’ before a game, and I realized that’s what taking action looks like,” Kumi said in an interview with the Japanese Times. “To be able to accept people you have no relationship with, that’s the kind of person I’d like to become and I hope we can create that society.”

Kumi is still playing professionally in the Nadeshiko League with Okayama Yunogo Belle.
