"why doesn't everyone share my special interest, they must be doing some kind of bit" rules everything around us
Book cover of Her Country: How the Women of Country Music Became the Success They Were Never Supposed to Be by Marissa R. Moss.

The background is a vibrant, clear blue sky over an outdoor festival stage. In a low-angle shot, a woman with long dark hair stands on the stage wearing a black sleeveless mini dress and high heels, holding the neck of an acoustic guitar upright at a microphone stand. Below the stage in the distance, a vast crowd stretches toward a city skyline under the bright sunlight.

when you throw a party about datacenters you're also kind of celebrating more diesel engines? yay 🫠
Data centers need dispatchable power - and no matter how many clean options hit the market, fossil fuel-powered generators remain in huge demand. In just five years, diesel generator capacity at data centers nearly tripled, going from 20 gigawatts in 2018 to 55 GW in 2024, according to a new report by the Better Data Center Project, a policy organization focused on minimizing the environmental costs of rapid data center expansion. While diesel remains the standard for backup,

prime continuous power is increasingly tilting toward natural gas. In 2026, multi-gigawatt continuous generation deployments-such as VoltaGrid and INNIO supplying over 2.3 GW of natural gas reciprocating engines to prime-power Oracle Cloud campuses- demonstrate that on-site fossil infrastructure is becoming a primary energy source to bypass grid congestion altogether.Traditionally, diesel backup engines operate under EPA stationary reciprocating internal combustion engine (RICE) regulations and New Source Performance Standards (NSPS Subpart IIII), which tightly restrict non-emergency runtime. However, grid operators and federal initiatives (such as grid resiliency and ratepayer protection programs) have increasingly encouraged data centers to take their load off the grid during severe heatwaves and winter peaks. This has turned tens of gigawatts of "emergency" diesel into de facto peaker plants.Communities and municipal air boards have mounted growing opposition. A major issue highlighted in 2026 is engine tiering: over 70% of Virginia's permitted data center diesel capacity remains older "Tier 2" units, which lack advanced selective catalytic reduction filters and emit roughly nine times more nitrogen oxides (NO) and 85% more particulate matter than current "Tier 4" equipment. Even routine maintenance testing-less than an hour weekly across thousands of units-creates localized air-quality disputes, leading several counties to introduce stricter sound setbacks and runtime logging

Book cover for Friday by Robert A. Heinlein. The artwork features a close-up, textured illustration of a woman’s face in cool blue and shadow tones, layered with faint astrological or navigational line charts. At the top, "ROBERT A." appears in white capital letters above "Heinlein" rendered in a large, vibrant yellow handwritten script, accompanied by the line "AUTHOR OF STARSHIP TROOPERS." To the left is a quote from The Wall Street Journal reading, "One of the grandmasters of science fiction." The lower-left corner includes a blue burst badge reading "The New York Times Bestseller," with the book title "FRIDAY" printed in bold white sans-serif lettering along the bottom.

imo it's true and exhausting that the default tone on microblogging is "these are idiots who haven't read anything" but in reality all strong intellectual disagreements, even by extremely informed people, ultimately have structures that rhyme with "you're an idiot who hasn't read the right papers"
I don't have the energy to engage on this today, but I'd love if people didn't assume everyone was stupid and hasn't read anything when they talk about these things (not referring to you alone).

Philosophical implications

Philosophers have interpreted the Church-Turing thesis as having implications for the philosophy of mind, [68)[69]170] B. Jack Copeland states that it is an open empirical question whether there are actual deterministic physical processes that, in the long run, elude simulation by a Turing machine; furthermore, he states that it is an open empirical question whether any such processes are involved in the working of the human brain. [71] There are also some important open questions which cover the relationship between the Church-Turing thesis and physics, and the possibility of hypercomputation.

When applied to physics, the thesis has several possible meanings:

ah well nonetheless honestly i want to know what the super forecasters forecast about epistemics
An alternative response to the evidence in this post is to say that benchmarks have moved much faster than forecasters expected in part because it was easier to "teach to the test" than forecasters expected and therefore that benchmarks are less meaningful for making sense of real-world Al capabilities than forecasters might have expected. Perhaps significant benchmark progress just doesn't lead to real-world impacts in many areas. In which case, we might expect forecasters to underestimate Al progress on benchmarks, but turn out to be more accurate when it comes to forecasting real-world impacts such as macroeconomic impacts.

NA @spin.pyokosmeme.group · 22/09/2026
ah you know they actually don't think you should forecast out that far
Forecasting beyond 3 years is not good. Anything above .25 is worse than random. Many questions are too specific and too far away for forecasting to be useful to them (Dillon 2020). A graph with a red line that gets jagged and more random further out than three years.

you'll never guess what class of Ising models you can derive softmax attention from
If reciprocal interactions are relaxed-turning the model into a non-equilibrium kinetic Ising system or continuous-time threshold network-the Lyapunov constraint vanishes. With directed couplings, the system can implement arbitrary Boolean logic gates and simulate universal 1D cellular automata (such as Rule 110) or universal neural networks, making it fully Turing complete.

but Wikipedia describes it more along the lines that i would find completely unobjectionable
Posthumanism posits that we must see that humans are tied to the nonhuman such as plants, animals, ecosystems, habitats and technology. This includes our likewise animal nature (biology), our connection to the environment (ecology), and the tools and extensions we create (technology). It also points out that we need to develop a new sense of care, duty, and modesty because nonhuman elements are increasingly seen as having an active role in the world. After all, the aim of posthumanism is not to escape reality in the future or rely only on technology. Instead, it seeks a deeper, more complex understanding of our present situation and where we belong within it.

It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) - and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.

The report, according to one of the sources, was "entirely false." But it also "almost started a war," the source said. Any US operation against a Chinese vessel could have risked spiraling into an armed conflict between the two nations.

i think Matthias Bal's work is foundational, along with this paper, but my NEAM posts *do* demonstrate a tiny iteration of the landscape, showing you can get LLM like structures from MaxEnt and pure stat mech, so i don't think this is psychosis but it's all near-expertise not perfectly in domain
Your NEAM argument seems to be operating around the third-to-fourth step rather than the first.

lastnpcalex.agency

And this changes how I would state the Merle result in relation to LLMs. Instead of:

"Turing patterns in kinetic Ising models suggest an analogy to transformer representations."

I would say something closer to:

If transformer dynamics can be formulated as an asymmetric kinetic spin system, then the known existence of Turing-like finite-wavelength instabilities in asymmetric kinetic Ising models establishes that spatially structured phase formation is already present within the same broad dynamical universality class.

That is a substantially stronger statement.
130
NA @spin.pyokosmeme.group · 12/09/2026
ok actually this paper might pre-figure AIAYN with an exact theoretical description of how transformers behave but no one noticed because no one was thinking of LLMs as an asymmetric kinetic Ising model

just look at the Ising model citations in the context of where they're cited, the models and their implications are completely confused in the text imo
I have discussed this elsewhere with respect to things like learning in gene regulatory networks [212,213] and ecological dynamics [233]. But there is more. For example, geometric frustration [305,306,307,308,309] misalignment of parts within a whole-is bona fide frustration of the kind that gets magnified (in some architectures) into our familiar cognitive version. On my view, mind precedes and is a superset of life, but we call "living" those things which are very good at scaling up the lowly competencies of their parts into aligned collective intelligences [185] with bigger cognitive light cones that project into new spaces to which the parts have no access, thus enabling the physical manifestation of new patterns and increasingly more sophisticated cognitive agents-all of which coexist in one material embodiment (Figure 13A,B). This is because the Platonic space also contains patterns that we recognize as kinds of minds, ranging across different classification schemes [123,310] (Figure 13C,D), and nervous systems (or perhaps cyborg or Al architectures) which facilitate the ingression of specific types of patterns. This provides a different way of thinking about the inner lives of n organs and various living constructs that are created for biomedical or bioengineering purposes. But this framework opens two other doors, less comfortable for many than even the diversity of minds suggested by the hierarchical, multi-scale competency of living bodies.
