Great article. We're still in the foothills of the energy transition. Electrifying as quickly as possible is still going to be a 20+ year project. We'll be exposed to the geopolitical weather the whole way.

A ban on local production is purely symbolic when we use 80 million tonnes per year. Concentrate efforts on demand destruction and production will fall anyway.

Ending North Sea production is purely symbolic when we use around 80 million tonnes per year. Focus our effort on reducing usage and production (from all sources) will decline as the market dries up.

Yes - I read around 70% of total antibiotics worldwide go into animal agriculture - intensive farming would be untenable without them.

I remember a chemistry lecture from my degree in 1990-91 about the Montreal Protocol and CFC replacements. The lecturer went through likely breakdown products and that we don't know much about the impact of TFA. This was always coming.

France is still trading uranium with Russia, nearly four years after Ukraine invasion
With uranium still spared from European Commission sanctions against Russia, the anti-nuclear NGO Greenpeace has highlighted that France remains tied to the Russian group Rosatom.

In the UK if gas supply is tight we prioritise domestic use over large industrial customers for safety reasons. Industrial users will have a level of competency to deal with that situation, whereas it would be a nightmare dealing with loss of supply at the household level.

The threat from China and Russia is hollow. How are China going to get there - through the Bearing Straight which the US controls, and the Russian navy just got humbled by a bunch of jetskis with bombs strapped to them. It's just bollox. US will lose more than it gains if it ruptures with Europe.

Graham Raynes @spikerello.bsky.social · 16/01/2026
If Trump takes Greenland the US will lose all its bases in Europe, which would massively affect their ability to project power around the world. That would be more significant than any gain Greenland is and I'm sure the US military are making that point to him.

Drought is the biggest risk to farming - there will be pressure on land to store much more water in reservoirs in southern England over coming years. Floating solar systems work better and reduce evaporation. We just need to be clever and make sure every hectare is used wisely.

40% of arable land grows fodder crops for livestock. Eating less meat opens that land for other uses.
110
Graham Raynes @spikerello.bsky.social · 21/12/2025
Not disagreeing - ironically the biggest risk to arable land is climate change. Even under current ambitions total land use for ground mounted solar will be 0.6% of the UK, less than the area covered in golf courses.

Land used for European biofuels could feed 120 million people daily
Europe wastes land the size of Ireland on biofuels which could be used to produce food or given back to nature to create carbon sinks
010
Graham Raynes @spikerello.bsky.social · 20/12/2025
Approx 2% of all UK arable land grows crops which get turned into fuel - looks like farming, tractors and stuff moving around, but it is for power production, not food. The same amount of land with solar would be much, much, much more efficient plus better for nature, no pesticides, fertilisers etc.

With the cooling provided by the water, and the possibility to rotate floating arrays to track the sun, it could generate more energy than an equivalent fixed land based system. Let's hope testing goes well.
