I've been around a bit. Grew up in Oldham, university at Keele and a few years living around Stoke-on-Trent, then a few more living in Bromley, South London. I've tended to base my fiction in those areas, too. DO NOT BLIND MSG ME! Sick of it.

“Yes. It kept him distracted just long enough. Watch.”
His hand slid off the door. He didn’t look well, all of a sudden. He blinked. He shook his head, collapsed to his knees and then fell head first into the door before sliding to the floor unconscious.
A minute later, the door slid open to reveal two men in overalls, blue ones this time. They began to strip him. The moment they removed his jacket, it resumed it’s normal, scruffy appearance. As they continued, one of them flickered and took on the form of Bedford while the newest inmate resumed his natural appearance, just as Eric had seen him.
The other one pointed and laughed.
“What?”
“Keep that. In fact, put it on. You can carry him down to sick bay. You’ll look a lot less conspicuous than me doing it.”
“What are you t… What the… Aahhh… Mememememe…. Why do I sound like Bedford?”
“Because he did? Look at your hand!”
He held it in up, a bare hand where a moment before it’d been gloved and recoiled. “Oh shit, what did I take that did this? This is amazing! I’ve never seen one in action, before.”
“You know how illegal they are. The belt, put it on.”
He nodded and buckled it around his waist before continuing.
Finally the hood came off and Eric nodded. “My arresting officer… I’ll have some fun with him in the gym, sir.”
“If he gets that far, Unknown. We want him out of the way, let’s make that permanent, if possible. It’s well within prison regulations to make this suggestion. Goad him.”
“Into attacking me? So he ends up in eight?”
“He seemed determined that should be your fate, so, yes.”
“Gladly, sir. Could I ask for a little… immunity, sir? Not for me, but if I told a few greys we’d got a policeman here they’ll be able to poke him with a little more than insults, sir.”
“Now that is against prison regulations, but in his case I’ll make an exception… I’ll wipe all records of this conversation once completed. I will order the guards to look the other way, but don’t let it get out of hand. He won’t emerge from his cell…

“Not me. It’s always Galloway, not that he lets his superiors know. He likes a clean database.”
“But the files you dumped on me went back to the turn of the bloody millennium!”
“Most of them were too serious! Even he couldn’t dump one of those on a random face on the camera! He would’ve never got away with it! It was only the pettier crimes that he… Diverted.”
“How many?”
“I don’t know! Shit of a lot!”
“And now, you’re here. A lifer. Never to be released, never see the sky again. And it’s all his fault. Don’t blame me. We only caught you in the act. He’s the one who made you do it. A policeman committing the most heinous crimes just because his boss tells him to.” Eric suddenly had a thought which brought a smile to his face. “Cell, add doctor Conrad to this conversation.”
“What are you doing?”
“Imagine a world where technology didn’t develop? Where the most advanced thing they have is radio and telegraph. Before you ask, that’s just coded pulses down a wire. No computers. No satellites. No robots. Just hard, manual labour and mechanical adding machines.”
The expression said it, even if his skin was too dark to show it otherwise. It was that same old blood draining from the face expression.
“They still have police there. They still investigate and solve crimes. They still catch the guilty party and imprison them. Even execute them in the more serious cases.”
“Execute? But the death penalty’s barbaric!”
“And block eight isn’t? It’s just as much a threat to you as me, now. A sword hanging over your head. One mistake…”
Nothing withered in his seat. “Shit!”
“Dunno why you’re looking so shocked. You tried twice to send me there, so you should know what we’re”
“I’m sorry. I was just following orders! We don’t like being talked to like that! OK!? The arrogance. Those stupid demands!”
The doctor appeared before Eric could respond. “Both Unknown and Nothing? Bit of a surprise.”
“He called me, sir. I called because I have a request… I know he doesn’t have any privileges yet a…

The #WIPSnips word for October 11th is "cousin" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts From book 6
When Lance stepped into classroom one, his eyes widened, his grin widened, too.
Sitting at desks in the middle of the class, two faces he recognised and a third, he didn’t.
“Laz! Tom! Oh, this is brilliant! And we’ve got a sixth, too!”
Laz grinned back. “When my dad got that phone call last night, and then Rhy phoned a bit later… I begged him. I’ve been looking forward to this for nearly as long as you have.”
Tom nodded. “Me too, though, in my case… I doubt I’ll be here for the full year.”
Lance sniggered. “Oh, you will be. That form you signed made sure of that.”
Tom shook his head. “I’m here until the sea cadets start. Those stories Diah told Luke… He told me. It’s the navy I want, and they said I’d be able to go when it was time. Oh, I’d still be here. This is my home, but I get the best of it. Army and navy. If the navy do what we are, full time, I’ll transfer over permanently.”
It was Lance’s turn to shake his head. “Don’t think that’s possible with the navy cadets, Tom.”
“Why not?”
“There’s only twenty bunk beds in there. There’s hundreds here. They can spare a couple of billets for special cadets.”
“Damn! Worth a thought, though.”
“Who’s that?” Lance pointed at the boy at the end.
The boy smiled. “Cadet third class Fletcher, at your service.”
“Errr… I… I don’t know anyone called Fletcher in Golden Hill or Scholar Green.”
“Bet you heard of the Millers, though?”
“Rose Miller?”
His grin grew wider. “She’s my cousin. When they got news the cadets were starting, her dad rushed over. They knew I wanted to join and when they said there was something even better on offer, I jumped at it. Didn’t even need to beg Mum and Dad when they knew there’d be money in it and no need to feed me for a year.”
“Where are you from?”
“Brindley Ford.”
“That explains it. I don’t know anyone down that way. Welcome home.”
He nodded. “Thanks. I love it already. This uniform’s amazing. The most amazing thing is, they weren’t charged for it. Bet that would’ve got a big no from Mum and Dad i…

Eric stood before the door and took a deep breath. “Suppose I’ve got to face them eventually.” He placed his hand on the door. “Open.”
“This door is locked.”
A sigh. “Well, he said access all areas as a white… Unlock and open.”
This time, the door slid open, so Eric shuffled inside and glanced back at the door. “Close and lock.”
There were a few seats free, but his wasn’t.
There was a fuzzy headed blob at the front but it appeared to have its back to the class, writing something on the whiteboard, so, he shuffled to his front desk. “Shift. That’s my place.”
“What?”
“I said shift, as in move. That’s where I always sit. There were only two better than me last time but I bet they’ve moved on to grade three by now.”
“But this is my place!”
Eric sighed. “How many lessons did it take for you to absorb how many sixteenths were in a dotted minim?”
“Dotted minim? Oh, shit! Is that you, Eric?” The figure sprang to its feet in shock “Take it, you’re way… what the shit happened to you?”
“Were you there when that cretin Gibbings tried to force me to take a flute?”
“And then planted one in your cell?” The figure chuckled. “Oh, God, the look on his face when you told him you’d destroyed it!”
“Well, this is why. Way worse than anyone can possibly imagine, what they do to you, there. Blacks have a few rules to follow, one, contraband. None allowed, ever. Anything found in your cell, this for all eternity. Another rule is no drugs. The scum contaminated my piss samples with bliss. One month, that felt like years, screaming in agony and stuck like this for the rest of my fucking life is the result.”
“But you’re here?”
“I had a”
“What the shit is going on, here?” The blob at the front had turned. “I locked that door for a reason, we’re in mid lesson! And what the shit are you?”
“Sorry I’m late, I had something important to do after gym. As for who I am, I’m a hell of a lot better than him. That’s my seat. Is… Is that you, Mr Ditton?”
“Of course I’m not Ditton, do I look like Ditton?”…

The #WIPSnips word for October 9th is "raid" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts From book 1: Beneath Dark Skies
“You’re sleeping in a ditch?! Why not just bite the bullet and go home?” Phil looked at his friend as if he was a different person.
“I need the ditch, I have another problem. Not just these shackles. This taser. It didn’t just stick me in that world making escape difficult. It actually reset my homeworld to that one and I have absolutely no intention of ever going back there in an uncontrolled drift. If I fall asleep, that’s where I go and if they capture me, it’s dead time. They don’t like slaves escaping, instant execution.”
The blood drained from Angie’s face. “Executed?”
“Yes. They don’t take slaves back, give them a slap on the wrist and send them back to their cell without any supper. Anyway, I think you’ve seen enough to convince you I’m not demented. We can drift back here so you can see how everything changes between here and home or we can go back to the courtyard so we appear in the clearing, your choice.”
“Courtyard” Ian chipped in “I don’t want anyone seeing me pop out of nowhere.”
Phil shook his head. “Here, I want to see this place change.”
“Angela, deciding vote...” Mike grinned.
“Here. Anyone sees us, tough. Just accuse them of being drunk.”
Yi-erwu let go.
The three stared in awe as the clouds danced in the sky. Then, without even a flicker, everything instantly transformed from cobbled streets populated by horses to modern tarmac and heavy traffic.
A short walk and they were back in the clearing. Yi-erwu appeared a moment later.
Phil’s awestruck expression seemed to have stuck solid. “Why didn’t you tell us! God, Mike, you can go anywhere, do anything!”
“Not quite. It takes a lot of walking to get most places where there’s a significant difference. I stumbled onto what look like the exact opposites of each other within a couple of days, tranquil, technology free versus hell on post-nuclear bombed earth. That’s another thing I need to do, check myself for radiation. No idea how long fallout sticks around, how long it takes to get washed away.” He …

He slapped the folder down on the desk with a grimace. “Got some things to book out.”
The man opened the folder and his eyes widened. “Oh, you’re the lucky bugger, are you?”
“Lucky? Get stuffed.”
“So, you’re not getting a months long paid leave, then? You can do whatever you like once you’ve done your job and that’ll be unlikely to take more than a day!”
“I get to spend months sleeping rough, you mean.”
“You won’t be on the road the whole time. Every village has an inn.”
“With no modern conveniences. No luxuries. Not even able to use what few spells I know unless I kill some critter to eat beforehand. Unless no-one’s looking and I can drain a little from a bloody lizard, I’m powerless. No better than a bloody ape.”
“I would’ve given my left arm to go on that assignment! A chance to see the world or a major part of it. Gods, you’re a miserable bastard. Have you always been like this?”
“Oh, no. I was springing around with all the joy in the world, looking forward to my exciting thrill filled life in law enforcement. Then I entered puberty!”
“Oh well, maybe you’ll see the positive in it once you get there. Hope you do anyway. It’ll be you making your experience unpleasant, not the experience itself. I often go trekking outside the city. Bet you’ve been too lazy to do even that.” He flipped through the remainder of the folder and nodded. “Strip.”
“What?”
“It’s only a five letter word. Even you can understand that. Everything off. And I mean everything. Put it in this crate, I’ll lock it away until you return.”
The sarge gulped. “Everything?”
“Right down to your underwear and socks. Yes. We’re giving you new clothing that fits in. Nothing from here goes there apart from that fleshy lump, your partner and a few finely crafted little magical trinkets designed to look innocuous out there. Now, strip!”
Muttering under his breath, he unbuttoned his tunic and shrugged it off. The shirt and vest followed.
“What’s that?”

Eric marvelled. While they marched on the double, Edward ran on ahead, following the corporal and at the end, even after fifteen miles weighted down as he was, he still wasn’t on his knees as Eric had been.
They stripped in the changing rooms and took to the showers, cleaning their kit as they did so, weapons left leaning in a line against the lockers with a few guarding them. There weren’t enough showers to go around for twenty-three, anyway.
“Not even the least bit tired yet, Yi-erwu?”
“A bit. That’s the hardest I’ve been pushed, though, and I loved not getting shagged out.”
“Let’s see if Lingwu was right before you get pushed into the ground, though. The doctor should have all the data he needs after that run. If not, I’m sure the corporal can find a way to reach your limit, eventually.”
“Hope he does. Useful thing to know."
The doctor met them outside the camp. The corporal called a halt, a left turn and marched up to the doctor, halting with a salute.
Eric muttered. “Why the salute? Didn’t do that last time.”
“Dunno, Eric.” Lee said behind him. “He is a doctor, though. Prolly thinks he deserves the respect.”
“Goliath. Step forward.”
Yi-erwu did so and the doctor stood before him.
“I’ve a better insight into what’s been done to you with another you for comparison. A you with a much longer exposure. Both of you enjoyed a greater benefit than the other men in the village and it was a benefit. Both, at the peak of physical fitness, both with enhanced resistance to extremes in temperature, both with improved healing mechanisms and enhanced immune systems. You, on the other hand… The healing of damage has its limits. If you push yourself too close to yours, you will damage yourself. The human body didn’t evolve to handle such stresses. It’ll heal, but it may take some time and that damage may become cumulative. Don’t let yourself get run into the ground like Eric was. He will recover fully over time, you may not.”
“So Lingwu’s warning? That I might might wear my bo…

“It smells so good!”
“And for dessert?”
“I’ll have the fudge cake.”
“And two teas, private.”
The private nodded and peered over the edge. “Don’t worry lad. It’s hardly a vindaloo. I’m sure you’ll love it.”
The moment they were seated, Diah rested his chin on his fist and watched with a grin. “Go on.”
“Do you have to stare at me like that?”
“I’ve given you an order, cadet. Just making sure you follow it. You eat what you’re given in the army. It doesn’t matter if you like it or not, so… Eat it.”
Lance glared back at him. I’m not a fuckin’ baby anymore. He stabbed a chunk of meat and shoved it into his mouth. The change was instant, from overconfidence to the biggest scowl he could muster. The heat, the horrible taste. He was just about to spit it out again when there was a kick under the table.
“Clamp those lips shut, cadet, and chew. And don’t just chew, savour it. Enjoy it.”
Lance stared at his brother in horror, but, given no choice, he did just that. The moment he bit into that lump of meat, the change… It was… He started chewing, a grin beginning to form. He stabbed another chunk and shoved that in, too.
“Lance, your problem is, you never give anything a chance. All you got when you first put it in there was the heat. Spicy food’s hot. That’s not one of the hottest, but it’s not the mildest, either. That’d be a korma. Now you’re tasting it…”
What emerged, talking with his mouth full, was barely English.
“Table manners, cadet. For god’s sake, I thought Dad taught you better than that.”
Lance nodded and continued to chew until he could swallow. “I said it was the best thing I’ve ever tasted, corporal.”
“Treat this army experience in the same way, Lance. What seems unpleasant at the start, once you bite down turns into something fuckin’ good.”
“Why was it so nasty?”
“All you got was the heat, I said that. You needed to bite down. Then those spices really started to flow. All the juices in the meat, mingling, evaporating, setting off that nose of yours. The sense of…

Welcome to a new week of #WIPSnips! The word for October 5th is "wall" #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts From book 5
Diah leant on the wall outside the church in Golden Hill as nonchalantly as he could manage. Best uniform on, cap an’ all.
They’d be out in a minute and he’d not seen the friends he’d made in his first two weeks here since he ran away. He’d decided to make an impression even if it was a little on the cold side.
The arctic gear would’ve been more appropriate but in his opinion at least, it didn’t look nearly as dashing.
Slow organ music began to waft out of the church and a few minutes later, the first of the congregation emerged. No-one he recognised at first. Then Rose appeared with her parents.
She smiled and walked over.
“Here to impress your friends, eh?”
Diah chuckled. “Oh, if only I could. They’d probably like it as much as I did that first day.”
“What?”
“Oh, sorry Rose. Impress. Two meanings. And the second I only heard about when I got snatched. It also means to press into service. That’s how I ended up on the Defiant in the first place.”
“So how are you? Eric’s spoken about some of the things he picked up from that book. It sounded like hell!”
“Hell? I love it! I’m sure he also said I’m going back?”
“Well all I can say, Diah, you’re luckier than most of us. A lot never find their place in the world.”
“Luckier than even them, Rose. I found my place in a different one.”
“Yeah, that is one thing you’d be wanting to keep under that hat.”
“Don’t I know it?”
Rose returned to her family and they walked away. Another wait.
Many were gathered around the vicar by the doorway, chatting, shaking his hand, blocking the exit for the rest.
Cob was the first to appear. He walked out of the church, looked around and froze to the spot, staring. It didn’t even look like he’d recognised him.
Diah waved and he inched closer.
“What the hell is a sailor d”
“Don’t tell me it’s been that long. I’ve only gone up a few inches! It’s me! Diah!”

He got out of his car, staggered across the street humming to himself, swiped his hand over the door lock, stumbled across the threshold shrugging his coat off as he went and dropped it on the floor. The living room door slid silently open and he froze.
Two people were sitting on his sofa. They turned to look at him. He reeled backwards and the door slid shut again.
“H… housh?”
“Yes, doctor Anderson? I’m detecting from your speech patterns an over indulgence in alcohol. That’s the third time this month, sir. Your contract permits only three. If you drink too much again before the tenth of next month, your employer will be notified.”

“I shee… shee them. Check again!”
“There is only one person in this building, doctor.”

He stumbled back into the living room, collapsed onto the easy chair facing them and stared at them blearily. “Thish ish a turn up for the booksh, heheh, I’ve never had a halushinashun before.”
“Oh for God’s sake, Eric. He’s pissed out of his brain! This is the best?”
“Looks like it. Sir, we’re not hallucinations and we need your help.”

“Your mind can play tricks on you when you’ve been trapped like that Jeth. Don’t think about it, that’s my advice. Just put it down to stale air and leave it at that.”
“How then?”
“A small section off to one side was clear, but it’s collapsed now too. Just after Dan arrived.”
“I don’t remember there being a…”
“Mind. Tricks. Forget it. Just think yourself lucky I spotted it, that’s all.”
They clambered into the lift, hit the buzzer and the lift ascended much more slowly than the descent but they were free and clear.
The cage arrived at the surface to a crowd. They let out a whooping cheer as all the men from the sealed off section exited the lift.
“Bloody hell, we thought you were gonners!”
“Mal! What the hell happened!”
“It’s these two. They dragged us out, don’t ask me how.”
“Eric? Dan? You saved them?”
Eric nodded. “Couldn’t just leave them, could I? Spotted a small section off to the side that was still clear and carried them through it, Dan followed. They didn’t see it, would’ve been stuck for good if we’d not got out straight away. The rest came down behind us.”
“But we checked!”
“I was a small section, only visible from our side. Little dent in the rock to squeeze through. We’re out, that’s the important thing.”
The crowd hauled them up and carried them cheering through the mine, depositing them in the shower room. “Beers are on us. Every one of us. I hope you can handle it ‘cos you’ll have a lot to down tonight!”

“You know the drill. Stand still, I’ll scan. The cube’ll build up an image.”
They were in the parlour of Eric’s dad’s house, both his parents were out, for once.
“OK. So this’ll tell me how much longer I have to keep this thing on?”
“It should, yes. It’s not been on three weeks, yet, so it’ll probably still need a couple more.”
“But my arm’s been in a cast for at least three!”
Eric shook his head. “Did you bang your head when that table vanished out from under you? That undid everything before that, we had to start from scratch, remember? At least I used the modern stuff for the stitches, they should dissolve without needing to be pulled out.”
Slowly, the image built up. The wound on his leg was highlighted but no-where near as brightly as before. The break was also highlighted, again, more dimly.
Eric touched the break. “Magnify.”
The arm replaced the whole image. The bones were joined, now.
“Estimate time to removal of cast on this injury.”
“Six days for safe removal, ten days for complete healing. Recommend series of physiotherapy exercises once arm is free.”
Dan sighed with relief. “Finally be able to move into my house. Out from under the so-called care of your mother.”
Eric laughed. “Sorry about that. Looks like she’s got enough on her plate, right now though, thankfully. Has she still been suffocating what with everything else she’s doing?”
“Not as much, no, but it’s still bloody irritating.”

“Hello? Wilton? Why the call?”
“Eric’s on the other screen, Your Honour. He believes there may be a serious problem soon, unless he steps in to stop it, but… Well… Can you send the map to me. Pentagram Predator?”
Eric leaned into the screen a little. “I need to know the location of the final kill, sir. Also, was there anything unusual found in his belongings. I’m assuming a book of some kind, probably very old. If there was, I need to see it.”
“Why? The case is closed!”
“It may have to reopen if we don’t find out, sir. When he makes his final kill. Here, in block three. There are enough women in this prison, after all. To make things worse, I assume you know about the state of his teeth?”
“Yes, very disturbing, someone willing to mutilate themselves like that. I mean, why would anyone do that?”
“I imagine he did it in preparation for that final kill. To make it easier to rip into flesh. That’s why I need to know that location of the final kill on the map, sir.”
“Checking now.” There was a pause. “Oh. Oh, I see. Sending it to you, Wilton. You can forward it to Eric, but I don’t know what good it’ll do him.”
The window appeared and Eric studied the map. “Table, zoom in to the intersection of lines with no dot on the pentagram in the middle.” When it did, he sighed. It was. The very parkland he’d seen on the map that’d appeared on his hood. The parkland on top of the prison, but he knew not to react. Otherwise, how would he explain knowing?
The governor gave him his excuse. “Oh, blood and shit! So that explains why he confessed. Why he went willingly?”
“So it is? The prison’s underground? Under that park?”
“Several reasons for that, not least of which is security. We stopped using buildings a century ago and since then, no escapes.”
Eric nodded. “And the book?”
“Yes, such an innocent looking thing. Very old, leather cover, hand written in an unknown language. What he could’ve gained from that, I have no idea.”
“Maybe not an unknown language. I’ve heard they guarded the…

Diah grinned. “Done! I’ll need your cell number. I’ll see if I can use the Baron’s network to get it to you and get my payment back to me.”
“Pickering, G 745339. Cell 236.”
Clothing scrubbed, boots rinsed down, the water turned off and they marched out of the shower and through another few sets of doors. The guard escorting them said nothing. They marched into the main area of B wing, up four flights of stairs and along the walkway.
“Halt!”
As the chain gang halted, the guard undid the shackles on the man at the back. He stepped into the end cell, the next one along was unlocked, he stepped in, too, and the guard locked the door.
The process continued down the line, two to a cell. Then he got to Diah.
Again. unlocked shackles. He moved on to the man in front and looked up as he unlocked him, too. He stepped into the cell immediately. Diah lingered.
“Well?”
“Sir?”
“In, you idiot!”
Diah glanced inside. “But”
“I said in!”
“What do you mean, sir? You don’t expect us to sleep together, do you?”
“What?”
“Look!” Diah pointed at the bare top bunk. No mattress. No bedding. “Besides, I need a change of clothes for tomorrow, sir!”
“Where the hell’s your mattress! What’ve you done with it!?”
“It’s in my cell, sir.”
“This is your cell!”
“It isn’t even my wing, sir!”
“What do you mean, not your wing!?”
“I’m in cell 385, sir. C wing and I’ve got obligations there, too, sir!”
“What the hell are you talking about, boy! C wing don’t do hard labour!”
“I requested it, sir! It isn’t a punishment for me. I enjoyed myself out there today, sir.”
“Why the hell wasn’t I told?”
“No-one ever tells us anything, sir. Only what to do and where to go. You’ll have to take that up with the office, sir.”

Oh, I dunno... I'd be pretty terrified facing up against a beholder capable of blasting you to bits or petrifying you, or Tiamat, with her breath attacks. I'd even run away from Venger, he can blow you up with his bolts of energy, after all... The kids in D&D usually escaped injury, though.

It's not like she died. Of course you should be able to seriously injure main characters. Where's the drama if it's all butterflies and rainbows? Boring as F**K without a little bit of peril woven in.
