When I'm done with my pencil outlines on paper I scan them into my pc to color them in PS Elements 4. With a rough coloring I decide which colors I'm going to choose. After that I insert the flat shadings and in the last segment I add airbrush/watercolors shades. #art #fanart #tutorial #pokemon

Ash and Misty play the original pokemon games on gameboy in a cozy atmosphere, lying on a japanese futon bed. The outlines are done with HB Faber Castell pencils on bristol paper. After scanning I change the color of the outlines to brown. It gives them a nice retro charme.

Then I just fill in the colors I think will suit the illustration with the bucket. I only work with 2-3 layers. One for the outlines, one for the characters and one for the background.

For colors I like to choose warm shadings, instead of using the same shade, that is just darker. When you have yellow, use orange for the shading. Or when you have white, use purple or blue instead of grey. It's something I've learned from older animations.

During the process I added some additional background elements, like the pokemon plushies, Mistys handkerchief or the Kasumi-lure keychain on Ash's belt. It adds bit more backstory and the viewer has something to look at. I drew them on separate piece of paper, that I was also scanning into the computer. Then copy them on a new layer and merge them with outlines. In the end it looks like they've always been there. Being a semi traditional and semit digital artist is fun!
