Alas, here in the USA, we can't have nice things.

David Brooks must be pleased. 'Raising serious questions' is downright gentle. Doesn't even ask for any answers!

I think we can decide that what we mean by sapience includes feelings, as well as being clever enough to do algebra. Our feelings are rooted in our biological needs and drives, and are something much more difficult for a machine to muster.

I use 218 kwh/mo, pretty much minimum, no car charging. You use 3 times that. I paid 52, you paid 158, about the same per kwh. Something you're doing is using more kwh. I have a friend whose bill blows up because she is running an infra red lamp to keep a turtle warm.

I was not thinking about ballot measures. But still, is it easier to get CA voters to pass a limit on billionaire taxes than to pass another measure allowing them again? If so, why?

Steve Gerrard @spgerrard.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Couldn't a future legislature pass a bill that repeals proposition 42, then pass a new tax on billionaires anyway? I don't think you can successfully legislate what future legislatures can or can't do.

Based on my astute political instincts, of which I have none, taking away people's medication 3 weeks before an election seems like bad timing to me.

"One lecturer keeps it in his spare time." Much better than a) having a committee do it, and getting mired in disputes. b) having some company do it, and charging us all for it. c) having the government do it, and turning it into red tape.

I prefer the BlueSky check. If it has anything worth reading, it will show up here. Also never listen to them, always read them. We are more thoughtful when reading.

What’s hateful in my mind is that showing it on TV seems like it will invite replays and a clip going around and such, which will be depraved.

I think a lot of the bad judgement we have seen in this AI craze is due to an inordinate fear that "the other guys are doing it and they will be way ahead of us unless we jump in too." As a result no one took their time to work through the development in a sensible way.

Curiosity has been on Mars 14 years. Perseverance 5 years. They can be replaced periodically, so the US can be said to have a permanent presence on Mars. We could do the same thing on the Moon. If they mean people living there, though, then lol, not gonna happen.

I don't know what item I stored in the bathroom, but I confess that I have stored things there. I would consider the soaking of beans to be something under cooking. If I had known it was considered a hobby I might not have done it.

I noticed that while the internet and computers come up in the discussion, they didn't seem to mention cell phones. I think texting has changed people a lot. We don't have to meet to catch up on news and plans. People text their vacation pics, so I've seen them before they get home.

We have never minded when websites state they are "powered" by some web tool, even though they are really powered by electricity. It has never meant anything. Whether the site has any power worth mentioning depends not on the tools used, but on how the web site designers have used the tools.

He was sentenced to death in 2013 by a jury. Even in the military it takes time to go through all the appeals. I'm not sure the choice of method is that significant; it's the death part that matters. There's not really a nice way of doing it.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going, and the Americans go home because their airplanes are top secret and very expensive and they can’t risk damaging or losing them.

Hey, don't get un-American, spending disgusting amounts of money on purchasing elections is a time honored tradition in the GOP. The goal is to improve the lives of the wealthy, and barely keep alive the minions doing menial and manual labor.
