Facebook reminded me about when I went to a small-town Pride picnic with our local churches... ... *before* I was out. My denomination drives me nuts sometimes, but I'll say: I'm grateful that I ALWAYS knew the one community that *would* receive me in full was Jesus' church.

Did a funeral today—awful circumstances. But I was steeled by this view: the cemetery gates were busted open in a recent storm. “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last, and the Living One. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever; and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.”

Resting on that verse he so often returned to in class and in conversation: “it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

He was sharp as a whip. He was bombastic and fun-loving. He was profoundly sensitive and unfailingly kind. I’ll miss him.

After the course ended, we kept up. He would phone me or I would phone him, and I got to sit at his feet for 2-3 hours. The last phone call was on New Years Day when he demanded a full account of the United Church’s activity on Israel/Palestine.

He would go on the most meandering theological tangents. It was like taking a stroll through a forest with a botanical expert.
