My time as a small town newspaper editor (and as someone working two 40-hour jobs) came to an end this morning. I’m done telling the stories of Alamogordo and am now primarily focused on my work with the NBA (which is actually on hiatus now and will return next month.)

Here’s our Tiny Town newspaper profile of Mark and Scott Kelly, who are relevant to our tiny town because they are being inducted to the international space hall of fame housed right here in Alamogordo

I showed a bunch of my friends the screen grab of me chatting with Senator Kelly, and there were absolutely a few of them who had to ask who Senator Kelly is, which surprised me because he has a pretty strong national profile

Coming next week in the Alamogordo News: my interview with Senator Mark Kelly, who’s one of the upcoming inductees to the International Space Hall of Fame located in Alamogordo. This goes into my personal Hall of Skype right next to international fugitive and art provocateur Nadya Tolokonnikova.

My favorite opera is playing in Albuquerque this fall and I’m trying to decide whether it’s worth six hours in the car for a 90-minute performance. Leaning toward no, unfortunately. May go to Carlsbad Caverns instead if I’m taking a day trip and sending my doggo to doggy day care.

I experienced 9/11 while living in the East Village; I was 3 miles from Ground Zero and my block instantly turned into a war zone complete with checkpoints manned by soldiers. Only flatbed trucks and rescue vehicles were allowed to run down 2nd Avenue. It was a terrifying time to be alive.

Half my life ago, one of my high profile assignments at the 2001 World Series was briefly chronicling W’s first pitch before Game 3. That article is no longer on the internet for reasons I don’t fully understand, but it is accessible at the internet way back machine…

Life as a managing editor: My Wednesdays are spent scrambling to get stories on the page and in working order, and Thursday mornings are spent worrying that we got everything right both on the printed page and the internet. On Thursday afternoon we start the process all over again for next week

I didn’t see mandalorian and grogu in the theater — I waited until it came to streaming — and here’s my opinion: perfectly enjoyable C+ movie that would’ve been more enjoyable as a streaming miniseries than it was as a feature film

Six week warning to southwestern history buffs and folks weighing a fall trip to small town New Mexico: The trinity site, home of the first nuclear detonation, is only open to the public once a year and this year it’s October 17. Good excuse to come to Alamogordo if you’re looking for one.

Ronald Reagan was such a stick in the mud that he hated a scene in 9 to 5 because it contained a depiction of people having fun after smoking weed

9 to 5 came out when I was 4 and I probably thought Dolly Parton was a movie star and not an American institution musical artist. It’s wild that she was roughly a contemporary of Janis Joplin, and Janis was gone before I was born. We were really fortunate to have Dolly Parton as long as we did.

Last week a bunch of my friends were excited because my hometown was playing in the Little League World Series and I had to remind them (A) we’re 50 years old and (B) there is no great enough monetary sum to make me watch Little League baseball. (Also my hometown got smoked by some town from CT)

Listening is a stressful business. If you conduct a difficult interview as a reporter and don’t leave it emotionally drained, you’re probably not good at what you do.

Me: Very tired all the time, trying to re-establish the reputation of the newspaper I’m working for, meeting people in all walks of life all the time and telling them the newspaper is a resource to them and our community. Everyone I meet: You have a lot of work to do!

I like it better when news sources are responsive, but when they aren’t, it can be fun to call and email them and try to leverage every point of contact until they either cooperate or tell you they can’t cooperate. The most important skills a journalist needs are single-minded focus and tenacity

People are arguing about California Vs. New Jersey on a very popular account here, and it’s not really a close call IMO. California has nine national parks and NJ has zero. If you like doing things outside, it’s the West Coast over the East Coast every day of the week. And I’m a native NYer.

Simple journalism truth: If you’re interviewing athletes, CEOs or just folks in your community, the best stuff they say will happen after you turn your recorder off. They’re just warming up when you start talking, and if you put the recorder down, you pop a bubble of pressure in their mind

I get tired just from being outside in the oppressive Alamogordo heat and it’s not like I’m doing hard labor … I’m shooting photos and conducting interviews and still I’m completely zapped by the time I finish work and get back into the air conditioning.

Military banter isn’t all that different from athlete banter. I know it’s a weird sentence to say but I feel like covering MLB for 15 years was pretty good preparation for being a reporter in a military town.
