I will say, in the last couple years, I've noticed an uptick in games with Accessibility features like No Damage, or "Platform Assists" that skip platforming sections. Features like these, while valid for casual play, should probably be disallowed or at minimum put into their own sub-category

Agreed! (Mostly) Anything that preserves the health of the runner / QoL of the run without breaking competitive integrity like automatic dialog skipping, cutscene skips, etc. - fully on board

On low-skill floor: FWIW, by this I mean the game is approachable - you dont need some difficult technique just to finish the game (i.e. foddian games - although those are also popular in speedrunning, but broadly speaking). I think games like Celeste & Ghostrunner do a great job here.

How do you define mechanical synergy? Do you have an example? Closest thing I can think of is not multiple mechanics together, but level design working in tandem with a mechanic.

Developers ask us how to make a game speedrunners will love. "Built for speedrunners" often reads as gimmicky. The key: replayability, mechanical depth, a low skill floor and a high skill ceiling. A timer and leaderboards are important incentives - but can't be the whole offering.

In SM64, forward speed is hardcapped - but backward speed isn't! Redirect your long jump backwards into a slope (or the infinite staircase) and it interrupts the jump before drag slows you, so you jump again instantly, speed compounds, allowing you to clip through the endless stairs to Bowser!

Perfect example in the clip - if you're back in GTA V before 6 drops, try it out! In this mission you can shove Lamar down the alley just by going first-person and walking into him. He rubber-bands forward, and even flat-out teleports!

You don't need an autosplitter or 200 hours to speedrun something! Sit down with a game you already love, steal one or two strats off a run you've watched, and just play it fast in a single sitting. Congrats - that's a PB. You're a speedrunner now!

So when a sub-cat like 'Time Trial Wet' doesn't fit the Misano level, there's not currently a great way to hide it. The blank 'Not Applicable' run is a placeholder mods drop in to denote it. You're still right to raise this though, it's a real weakness in how leaderboards work (for now).

Hi Doc, this isn't a fake run, it's a mod working around a structural limit. Levels on Speedrun are game wide, and a sub-category variable can only apply to one category or all of them, never to a single level.
