I remember being told in film school to never write (beat) in dialogue to indicate a short pause. The screenwriting textbooks said it was amateur, and that you need to write (pause) instead. But then I go back and read older screenplays and (beat) is everywhere. For example, from Manhunter (1986):

A monologue from Manhunter, with multiple (beat) marks

I figured out how to digitize Kesper's revised writing system! It was a MASSIVE pain that required me to design 80 ligatures from spare parts. Thanks to Birdfont for doing what FontForge couldn't. #conlang #neography #alien #writingsystem #abugida

They've been circling the drain for 6 years, they ran out of good will from the public just in time for 2020 to hit. The failed buyouts in 2022 didn't help either. It's a miracle they even survived the first bankruptcy 8 months ago.

The meetings are worth it if you're a regular rider, and the focus groups too if you get invited to one! I was on one that determined how the C and K lines would intersect when LAX opened, and what we said very clearly affected how that turned out.

Every webcomic has two stories: the story the artist is telling and the meta story of watching an artist make creative choices over the course of many, many years. You get to watch art evolve and change in real time.

Another drawing by the great Linked-Memories on DA. This one means a lot to me. I've been through a lot recently, and it feels good to imagine myself above everything that's been dragging me down. It keeps me half sane through the worst of it.

Up on Tumblr - I do a deep dive into @temiree.bsky.social 's webcomic Little Runt. I cover what makes it so great, how it got stuck on one scene for 4 years, and why dream sequences are so hard to write. www.tumblr.com/spectrallik/...

The Trouble with Dream Sequences

Every writer knows the pain of getting stuck on a scene. It happens for many reasons - lack of planning, unclear purpose, the idea not working as well on paper as it did in your head, having a start…
