MD 2343 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR NORTH TEXAS...SOUTHERN OKLAHOMA Mesoscale Discussion 2343 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1121 PM CDT Wed Sep 30 2026 Areas affected...North Texas...Southern Oklahoma Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 010421Z - 010615Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...A cluster of thunderstorms over north-central TX will track north-northeastward into southern OK. Increasing shear profiles could lead to a brief tornado or two. The overall threat appears limited, and a watch is not currently expected. DISCUSSION...A cluster of thunderstorms is currently affecting Wise/Montague counties of north-central TX. The VAD profile at FWS has shown recent acceleration of low-level winds, with 1km AGL winds over 40 knots and 0-1km SRH over 300 m2/s2. Recent radar trends have shown a few weak low/mid-level circulations in the cluster of storms, evidence of the enhanced shear profiles. Given the influx of moist and marginally unstable air (dewpoints in the low 70s and MLCAPE ~800 J/kg), there is some potential for a brief tornado or two or locally damaging winds in this cluster for the next couple of hours. Given relatively low confidence and the small area of concern, a watch is not currently anticipated. ..Hart.. 10/01/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2340 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR PARTS OF NORTHERN OKLAHOMA INTO SOUTHEAST KANSAS Mesoscale Discussion 2340 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0500 PM CDT Wed Sep 30 2026 Areas affected...parts of northern Oklahoma into southeast Kansas Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 302200Z - 010030Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...Scattered storms may persist from parts of central into northern Oklahoma and southeast Kansas. A storm or two may exhibit rotation with a brief/weak tornado not out of the question. DISCUSSION...Scattered storms have developed within within the warm sector from northern TX across central OK, with additional activity extending into east-central KS. While the primary large-scale lift will remain to the north of these areas, south/southwest 850 mb winds are forecast to increase to over 40 kt this evening. Currently, the TLX VWP shows 0-1 SRH around 125 m2/s2, with larger values farther north to 300 m2/s2 at ICT. Given a few hours of scattered storms within this corridor, and areas of stronger low-level shear (especially into KS), a brief tornado cannot be ruled out if a more robust cell can develop. ..Jewell/Hart.. 09/30/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2339 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR NORTHEASTERN NEW MEXICO INTO THE OKLAHOMA/TEXAS PANHANDLES Mesoscale Discussion 2339 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0356 PM CDT Wed Sep 30 2026 Areas affected...northeastern New Mexico into the Oklahoma/Texas Panhandles Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 302056Z - 302300Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...A few low topped storms may produce instances of marginally severe hail and strong to sever wind this afternoon/evening. DISCUSSION...Cooling mid-level temperatures and increasing forcing for ascent with the trough behind the surface low across New Mexico is leading to gradual destabilization and increase in thunderstorm activity across northeastern New Mexico. Moisture is somewhat limited to the west across New Mexico, with low to mid 50s dew points, improving with eastward extent into the OK/TX panhandles with around 250-500 J/kg of MLCAPE. This fairly marginal instability will be sufficient, given strong deep layer shear, for a few low-topped storms/transient supercells capable of marginally severe hail and strong to severe wind. This will shift eastward into the panhandles with time this evening. Overall, this potential looks to remain fairly isolated and watch issuance is not anticipated. ..Thornton/Mosier.. 09/30/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2337 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR PORTIONS OF CENTRAL KANSAS INTO EXTREME NORTHERN OKLAHOMA Mesoscale Discussion 2337 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0221 PM CDT Wed Sep 30 2026 Areas affected...portions of central Kansas into extreme northern Oklahoma Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 301921Z - 302145Z Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent SUMMARY...A few of the stronger storms may produce brief tornadoes this afternoon. Timing of a Tornado Watch is uncertain, but one will likely be needed at some point within the next few hours. DISCUSSION...A surface low continues to move northeastward, with airmass recovery noted with an approaching dry slot and accompanying 70 kt 300 mb jet streak (currently over the TX Panhandle). A surface warm front continues to track northward, with the warm sector characterized by 80+ F surface temperatures and upper 60s to 70 F dewpoints. Along the warm front and OK/KS border, regional VADs are depicting appreciably curved/elongated hodographs and 200-300 m2/s2 sfc-3km SRH given backed surface flow. The current thinking is that low-topped supercells will eventually develop and continue to intensify through the afternoon as destabilization continues along the warm front and the 300 mb jet streak overspreads KS. Storms near the warm front will have the best low-level rotation potential, with a few tornadoes possible (albeit brief given poor tropospheric lapse rates and marginal MLCAPE constrained to very thin profiles). The primary question at the moment is when storms will become severe given the anticipated slow storm evolution. As such, convective trends will continue to be closely monitored to determine the most appropriate time for Tornado Watch issuance. ..Squitieri/Mosier.. 09/30/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2317 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 673... FOR PORTIONS OF EASTERN/SOUTHEASTERN COLORADO AND EXTREME WEST-CENTRAL KANSAS Mesoscale Discussion 2317 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0612 PM CDT Sun Sep 20 2026 Areas affected...portions of eastern/southeastern Colorado and extreme west-central Kansas Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 673... Valid 202312Z - 210045Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 673 continues. SUMMARY...Damaging hail will be possible for the next 1-2 hours. Additional thunderstorms capable of large hail are possible this evening. DISCUSSION...A mature supercell continues to track southeast across the Plains of eastern Colorado this afternoon. This supercell has a history of producing very large hail (in excess of 2.5"). The environment along and ahead of this supercell remains conducive for maintaining its current intensity given effective-layer shear around 45 knots and MUCAPE between 1500-2000 J/kg. Absent the development of additional thunderstorms that may destructively interfere, the current supercell should continue to pose a threat for large-to-very-large hail over the next couple of hours, with overall magnitude of the hail size governed by storm-scale processes. With time this afternoon and into the evening, the expectation is that the boundary layer will cool sufficiently with the loss of diurnal heating that a gradual weakening of the supercell should commence. As such, the overall magnitude of any potential hail should wane as well. Additional thunderstorms capable of large hail and damaging winds are still possible behind this initial supercell and that potential will continue to be monitored. ..Marsh.. 09/20/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2295 CONCERNING TORNADO WATCH 669... FOR SOUTHEAST NEBRASKA INTO SOUTHWESTERN IOWA Mesoscale Discussion 2295 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0618 PM CDT Mon Sep 14 2026 Areas affected...southeast Nebraska into southwestern Iowa Concerning...Tornado Watch 669... Valid 142318Z - 150015Z The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 669 continues. SUMMARY...Multiple severe gusts are possible over the next few hours, especially across southeastern NE. A couple of tornadoes may occur, mainly over southwestern IA. DISCUSSION...Multiple linear segments have developed over the past couple of hours, accompanied by severe gusts. These storms will continue to progress eastward amid appreciably strong mid-level flow atop a well-mixed boundary layer, accompanied by a severe gust threat. At the moment, the greatest short-term severe threat exists with storms over southeastern NE, where surface temperatures into the 80s F to near 90 F, are promoting downward momentum mixing potential. As these storms progress into southwestern IA, they will traverse a baroclinic zone with somewhat cooler surface temperatures (e.g. low 80s F), but with a more moist boundary layer given low 70s F dewpoints. Destabilization of this boundary layer is somewhat uncertain. However, should the southwest IA boundary layer destabilize, backed low-level flow and accompanying enlarged hodographs (per OAX VADs) suggest that a couple of QLCS tornadoes may develop, with a severe gust threat also continuing. ..Squitieri/Smith.. 09/14/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2293 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR PARTS OF WESTERN KANSAS INTO SOUTH-CENTRAL NEBRASKA Mesoscale Discussion 2293 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0309 PM CDT Mon Sep 14 2026 Areas affected...Parts of western Kansas into south-central Nebraska Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 142009Z - 142245Z Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent SUMMARY...Thunderstorms should increase in coverage through the remainder of the afternoon into early this evening. The stronger storms will be capable of producing a few severe wind gusts. DISCUSSION...Isolated high-based thunderstorms are evolving within a NE/SW-oriented surface trough in southwestern KS, with additional deepening cumulus embedded within a zone of warm advection over north-central KS and south-central NE. In southwestern KS, the modified 18Z DDC sounding depicts steep low/midlevel lapse rates and 30-40 kt of southwesterly flow through the depth of the boundary layer. This will promote robust thunderstorm downdrafts, with a risk of severe wind gusts -- especially with any small clusters that evolve. Farther northeast, thunderstorm development/intensification is more uncertain, given the persistent cloud coverage and showers. Nevertheless, temperatures have warmed into the lower/middle 90s amid 40-45 kt of flow in the lowest 2 km AGL (per UEX VWP data). Therefore, any thunderstorms that mature in this environment will also pose a risk of severe wind gusts through the afternoon and early evening. It is unclear if the severe risk will warrant a watch, though convective trends are being monitored. ..Weinman/Guyer.. 09/14/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2206 CONCERNING SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH 644... FOR NORTH-CENTRAL MONTANA Mesoscale Discussion 2206 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0348 PM CDT Wed Sep 02 2026 Areas affected...North-central Montana Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 644... Valid 022048Z - 022245Z The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 644 continues. SUMMARY...The potential for severe winds, including significant severe winds, will increase over the next couple of hours across north-central Montana. DISCUSSION...A line of broken convection continues to push north across the higher terrain of western MT. Convective cells have exhibited relatively short lifespans thus far, likely indicating that significant cold-pool amalgamation has yet to occur to support sustained updrafts. Nonetheless, strong dynamics (evidenced by 45-55 mph gusts away from deep convection) coupled with convective downdrafts are yielding severe gusts between 60-75 mph. The strong non-convective gusts across south-central MT and eastern ID are reflective of the stronger low/mid-level jet beginning to push northward into central MT. As this feature continues north it will overspread a warmer and more deeply mixed air mass in place at lower elevation across north-central MT. The combination of stronger flow overspreading the top of the deeply mixed boundary layer (as suggested by modifying the 18z TFX sounding) coupled with convective augmentation will likely support a corridor of more widespread gusts of 65-80 mph - especially where temperatures have warmed into the mid 80s. ..Moore.. 09/02/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... A few tornadoes and a couple intense tornadoes possible Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph likely Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail events to 2 inches in diameter possible SUMMARY...Supercell thunderstorms should pose some threat for large hail and perhaps a few tornadoes as they move eastward late this afternoon and evening across parts of western and central NY. A strong tornado appears possible if thunderstorms can remain at least semi-discrete this evening. Thunderstorms will likely grow upscale into a bowing cluster later this evening, with a greater threat for scattered to numerous severe/damaging winds up to 60-70 mph. MD 2201 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH LIKELY FOR WESTERN NEW YORK Mesoscale Discussion 2201 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0150 PM CDT Wed Sep 02 2026 Areas affected...western New York Concerning...Severe potential...Watch likely Valid 021850Z - 022045Z Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent SUMMARY...The severe weather threat will increase this afternoon/evening. A watch will be needed by 21Z. DISCUSSION...Storms have formed along a frontal zone across southern Ontario where moderate instability has developed this afternoon. The airmass ahead of the front will continue to destabilize with moderate to potentially strong instability expected across western New York by late afternoon. The aforementioned instability, combined with moderate to strong shear should support initial supercells, but clustering into a more mixed-mode may occur through the late afternoon and into the evening. Damaging winds will be the primary threat, especially where any bowing structures develop amid clustering storms. A more conditional hail/tornado threat may develop if more discrete storm mode can be maintained. The early convective development across Ontario does lead to more uncertainty in the maintenance of supercell mode. The storms may congeal into one or more linear structures before entering western New York. However, if a more discrete mode can be maintained after 23Z, when the low level jet is forecast to strengthen, a greater tornado threat may exist. Therefore, a tornado watch may need to be issued, especially if discrete supercell mode appears possible this evening as low-level shear increases. ..Bentley/Gleason.. 09/02/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2153 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR NORTHERN UTAH INTO SOUTHEAST IDAHO Mesoscale Discussion 2153 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0355 PM CDT Thu Aug 27 2026 Areas affected...northern Utah into southeast Idaho Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 272055Z - 272300Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...The threat for isolated severe wind gusts is expected to increase through the remainder of this afternoon into early evening. The areal coverage of the threat is expected to remain too limited for a watch consideration. DISCUSSION...Ahead of a subtle disturbance embedded within a moist, mid-level flow regime, a band of thunderstorms is ongoing across eastern Elko County NV and western Tooele County UT as of 2045Z. RAP-based proximity soundings indicate a well-mixed, 3-km deep boundary layer with MLCAPE of generally less than 500 J/kg. Some increase in deep-layer shear is forecast this afternoon, which coupled with the presence of steep low/mid-level lapse rates and strong evaporational-cooling potential in the sub-cloud layer will support a few severe wind gusts as convection progresses from southwest through northeast across the region. ..Mead/Mosier.. 08/27/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2150 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR PORTIONS OF SOUTH-CENTRAL AND SOUTHEAST TEXAS Mesoscale Discussion 2150 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0220 PM CDT Thu Aug 27 2026 Areas affected...portions of south-central and southeast Texas Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 271920Z - 272115Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...Isolated wind gusts appear possible from late afternoon through this evening. The areal coverage of the threat is expected to remain too isolated for a watch consideration. DISCUSSION...Ahead of an MCV moving through the Red River Valley, visible satellite shows deepening cumulus and a few thunderstorms from the Concho Valley to Hill Country, with additional cumulus noted along a surface trough from San Antonio to Rock Springs. Latest objective analysis suggests some lingering convective inhibition; however, continued daytime heating will support further air mass destabilization with a gradual increase in thunderstorms expected over the next 1-3 hours. Weak vertical shear will limit the potential for storm organization; however, the presence of a relatively deep, well-mixed boundary layer will be supportive of isolated wind gusts with any more intense pulse storms. ..Mead/Mosier.. 08/27/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2141 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH UNLIKELY FOR PORTIONS OF EASTERN MISSISSIPPI INTO CENTRAL ALABAMA Mesoscale Discussion 2141 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0453 PM CDT Wed Aug 26 2026 Areas affected...portions of eastern Mississippi into central Alabama Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely Valid 262153Z - 270000Z Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent SUMMARY...Isolated damaging gusts are possible this evening with a cluster of thunderstorms ongoing across MS and AL. Further clustering is expected as storms move south/southeast. DISCUSSION...As of 2150 UTC, regional radar imagery showed a cluster of strong to severe storms ongoing near the MS/AL border. Over the last hour, consolidating outflows have allowed for additional storm development to take place, bolstering convective intensity within the ongoing cluster. The warm and very humid air mass remains strongly unstable ahead of these storms and should continue to maintain their intensity into this evening. Further aided by weak ascent at the base of a broad upper trough, storm coverage is likely to increase over the next couple of hours given little inhibition. Flow aloft remains weak which will support only modest storm organizational and a multicellular mode. Expectations are for outflow to continue to consolidate as it moves south/southeast across eastern MS into central/southern AL. High PWATs above 2.5 inches will support water-loaded downdrafts within the more intense cores, potentially capable of occasional damaging gusts. The primary limiting factor remains to be the modest deep-layer shear. This should limit storm organization with only intermittent intensification expected. While an isolated severe risk is possible this evening a watch appears unlikely at this time. ..Lyons/Smith.. 08/26/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product... MD 2139 CONCERNING SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE FOR SOUTHEAST WYOMING...FAR SOUTHWEST NEBRASKA PANHANDLE...AND EASTERN COLORADO Mesoscale Discussion 2139 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0243 PM CDT Wed Aug 26 2026 Areas affected...southeast Wyoming...far southwest Nebraska Panhandle...and eastern Colorado Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible Valid 261943Z - 262215Z Probability of Watch Issuance...60 percent SUMMARY...An initially isolated severe storm threat is expected to develop by mid to late afternoon, mainly in the form of large hail up to two inches. The potential for severe wind gusts up to 65-75 mph may increase this evening. A watch is possible by 21-22Z. DISCUSSION...Visible satellite and lightning data indicate deepening cumulus and early thunderstorm development from the Laramie Mountains to the Sangre de Cristo Range, as well as along a subtle boundary over east-central CO into northwest KS. The presence of steep low/mid-level lapse rates, surface dewpoints in the 50 to low 60s, and considerable daytime heating are contributing to a destabilizing air mass east of the mountains with MLCAPE expected to increase to 1500-2000 J/kg later this afternoon with minimal convective inhibition. As such, expect storms to gradually move off the high terrain with greater uncertainty in the evolving convection over east-central CO. The presence of 30-35 kt of deep-layer shear may support a few supercells capable of large hail up to two inches as the initial hazard. By this evening, there is some model signal for storms to merge into clusters, at which point the threat for severe winds with gusts up to 65-75 mph would increase. ..Mead/Mosier.. 08/26/2026 ...Please see www.spc.noaa.gov for graphic product...
