Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 07/10/2026There's a bit in the movie "Help!" where we see an exterior shot of the four Beatles walking into adjoining townhouses, and then an interior shot revealing that the walls have been knocked out to make one giant shared house. 250
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Oh I meant it as a *positive* that they didn't have to bring up the yellow thing, have the Manhunter paint itself yellow, have a whole episode's central conflict be "how do we wash that yellow paint off", etc. 😂 Minimizing the use of the ring means not having to deal with how silly it is. 100
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 06/10/2026They did manage to get through the whole season without bringing up the fact that his secret weakness is the color yellow (the only thing I remember about the Green Lantern from reading comics as a kid), thanks to their very sparing use of ring powers. 100
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 03/10/2026The archaeological sites along the Via Appia Antica are pretty neat. I wished we'd had a whole nuther day to explore, but my favorite of the ones we visited was the Catacombs of St Sebastian. Lunch at Giardino di Giulia e Fratelli (just down the road) was excellent. 010

Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I've been struggling with the question of how to give feedback on this kind of thing. Every time I see an AI-slop menu/poster/whatever I want to tell someone "hey that looks bad and it makes your place look bad" but I feel like the person I tell isn't gonna be the one who needs to hear it. 110

Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 29/09/2026It cuts both ways, too -- it will sometimes bend over backwards to avoid meddling with another piece of code *directly* and instead introduce an ugly abstraction leak. It's generally bad at big-picture thinking (but good at implementation if given focused instructions and corrections). 010
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I have a 3-year-old and Danny Go is not yet on our radar, but now I'm going to do some research and see if I'm okay with that becoming the new obsession... 000
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 25/09/2026This HAS to be based on best single season rather than overall quality of show because Game of Thrones in the top ten? Come on. Come ON. 010
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I thought this was some kind of synesthesia thing: cologne is a feeling, silk is a taste, chocolate is a sound. Then I realized you're in a place. 010
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 22/09/2026It seems very weird to me to respond to a five-part proposal with a complaint that the first part doesn't solve the entire problem. Unless, of course, one views the existence/survival of below-market-rate tenants as a problem in itself! Then I can see how that would rile one up. 110

Do you reconsider your view of what it takes to win an election or do you just keep doing the same thing and sulking when it doesn't work? 110
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Similarly, you can't just hope all the shitty people will vanish. We will probably always have shitty people! The task is to make sure that they aren't able to propagate their shitty policies by winning elections. 020
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 05/09/2026It can be both. There are a lot of people who want shitty things, and a lot who want good things. If the opposition turns out all the people who want shitty things AND you fail to turn out all the people who want good things, you lose. You can't just hope the opposition will fail. 220
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Welcome to politics. Most people vote on vibes rather than reasoned assessment of policies. It's fine to be mad that that's how it works. It's also fine to be mad that people whose WHOLE JOB is politics don't have as firm an understanding of how to win an election as a senile reality TV star. 220

Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 03/08/2026In fact, back in my day, Perforce's own internal Perforce repo always ran on a mainline nightly build of p4d, because our policy was that the mainline was kept stable enough for us to entrust our own family jewels to. And we didn't even have fancy CI systems back then! 110
Chekhov's Footgun @spamwise.bsky.social · 03/08/2026"Even Perforce's game-dev material says HEAD is never stable at AAA scale." -- I believe that someone wrote that, but if I still worked there I'd yell at them for it.
