Close up of a man in a goofy hat talking to Sisko during the Bell Riots of 2024. Caption reads "I really think we should kill this guy."S03E11-12: Past Tense (5)
•	This is, without a doubt, an all-timer episode of Star Trek. The Bell Riots. Sanctuary districts. A vision of the 2020’s that doesn’t feel far off from the world we currently live in. This really is the epitome of Star Trek and its ceaseless pursuit of a utopian view of the future, and a dire view of the present. This episode hits closer to home than almost any other episode of this show. A time travel thing happens to Sisko, Bashir, and Dax, sending them to San Francisco in 2024. There are these walled areas of the city where the homeless and unemployed population are forced to live, doomed to be shuffled around a bureaucracy that forgets they exist while being promised jobs that never come. Sisko and Bashir accidentally get caught up in a riot that famously began to change the tide in the United States towards caring for these people and increasing social programs. It’s intense, it’s very down to Earth, and it speaks to very really problems that the U.S. is experiencing right now. We have a culture that either doesn’t know how to or doesn’t want to care for the most vulnerable people in our society. The powers that be merely want the homeless to be out of sight and out of mind because they’re “dangerous” or “ugly and gross.” It makes me sick.
alt text cont.

DS9 hits so fucking close to home in this episode. These are just people who want to take care of their families, have jobs, contribute, be normal members of society. When the original leader of the revolt is killed, Sisko has to pretend to be Gabriel Bell and make sure the past isn’t altered too much. The standoff with the hostage situation keeps a high level of intensity throughout the episode, all while the rest of the Defiant crew are trying to mount a time-rescue. This episode is an absolute masterpiece of acting from Avery Brooks. His emotion, his ability to deliver the hard-hitting lines, he throws himself into it and absolutely elevates this show the same way that Patrick Stewart could do for TNG. This is peak Star Trek. Watch this episode right now. It feels to me a lot like the best episodes of TNG, where you don’t need to know a damn thing about the show or these characters to enjoy what you’re watching. It’s eighty minutes of peak. It’s absolute cinema.

s3e10, fascination (2)
Lwaxana Troi, the best recurring character in Star Trek, is dancing with Odo and holding him tightly with a look of joy and relaxation on her face. Odo looks like the mere idea of any level of intimacy is going to kill him dead on the spot. He looks terrified of someone caring for him. Caption reads "Oh, dance with me, Odo."S03E10: Fascination (2)
•	It’s just kind of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but Star Trek. We get my beloved Lwaxana, but unfortunately, she has very little to do here despite being the driving force behind the episode. I generally like when Star Trek does these homages or adaptations of classic works of literature, but they usually lack a certain depth when it’s just the cast of the show plastered over a Shakespeare play. It’s silly and kind of funny but has absolutely no substance. Bareil is here and it pisses me off I HATE seeing him horny.

Hey, it's Riker! Wait a second, hold on there... he's removing FAKE sideburns? How could this be?! This must be TOM Riker, not our beloved Will! What a clever disguise!S03E09: Defiant (3)
•	It’s Riker! Or is it? Tom Riker pretends to be Will and STEALS the Defiant! It’s a Maquis episode. I have my issues as we all know, but the twist of this episode elevates this to something truly interesting. I also think they tried to tie off the loose end of Two Rikers, which they do here for better or for worse. I think Tom Riker is an interesting character. He basically has to watch another version of himself have the life and career he feels he should have had. It’s kind of sad! Here he’s trying to be someone in the grand scheme of things by sacrificing himself for the Maquis. It’s a compelling story. Anyways, there is a twist in the end, as Tom’s excursion into Cardassian space reveals a secret fleet of ships being built by the Obsidian Order, against the wishes of the Cardassian Central Command. We again are seeing the cracks forming in Cardassian society, and it’s only going to develop more from here. It’s got all the intrigue and subterfuge and secret bullshit that we get from the enemy intelligence services in Star Trek, which I always love.

The context for this image does in fact suck. We see a holosuite program that was made with the intent to be a pornographic program featuring Kira, but her and Odo found out, and have edited the program to have Quark's head on a woman's body. He is laying in a luxurious pink bed. Caption reads "I've been waiting for you."S03E08: Meridian (1)
•	There is an A-plot for this episode that revolves around phase shifting aliens and a Dax romance that isn’t meant to be, and that’s fine, I guess. It’s pretty boring, all things considered, and to an extent, it feels like a recycled TNG script that never got made. Whatever. What I really want to talk about is the B-plot with Quark. An alien has paid him to make a pornographic holosuite program of Major Kira. Kira has spurned his advances, and he literally asks Quark to, essentially, make non-consensual AI generated porn of her so he can fuck the holographic Kira. Now, I don’t think the writers fully grasped the ideas they were putting to paper. There is a lot of social context in the modern day of generative AI that changes my perception of this episode. AI generated porn of real women is a huge problem right now as men find more avenues to devalue women and take away bodily autonomy. This episode, of course, is Not That Deep, but I can’t ignore how gross this plotline is. Odo and Kira get the best of Quark and Tiron (the alien, who is, by the way, played by Jeffrey Combs) by changing the program to have a woman’s body but Quark’s head. In the end, it’s played for laughs, but it’s a hard one to digest. This would probably be a zero rating if it were the main plot of the episode, but since there are only a few scenes of this, it escapes it. For now.

s3e7, civil defense (3.5)
We are in an ore processing area of DS9. The Chief and Sisko are attempting to open a door. In the foreground, out of focus, is a computer monitor shows a recorded message from Gul Dukat. Caption reads "Bajoran workers, your attention, please."S03E07: Civil Defense (3.5)
•	ATTENTION BAJORAN WORKERS. Banger episode! It’s a damn classic for a reason! This one is a lot of great Star Trek stuff, even if it lacks a little depth. The station has some old programming that turns on the crew, and threatens to destroy the station, believing that Bajoran ore processors are in revolt. It has some good action, crawling through ducts and conduits, hacking into computers, and Dukat being a smug piece of shit. The little recordings he left to threaten the Bajoran workers, while kind of harrowing, are kind of funny in this context. The escalating nature of the messages is enough to keep the action progressing in the episode, and the culmination of Dukat arriving on the station and getting trapped with everyone else is kind of gold. I also like when the crew gets split up in some way and we see different groups independently acting in parallel situations. The final video message calling Dukat a pussy and a traitor is so fucking funny. They eventually do Science and Computers to stop the station from blowing up and all is well again, but god damn what a fun episode. It’s a definite highlight of the show so far.

s3e6, the abandoned (2.5)
Odo is kneeling on the ground in his quarters. Kira has just gifted him a bouquet of flowers, and he has put them in the bucket he used to sleep in. He is holding up the bucket with a sort of dopey smile on his face. He is very pleased!S03E06: The Abandoned (2.5)
•	It feels like this one is perhaps a sort of jumped gun. They find a young Jem’Hadar boy in a shipwreck and they try to convince him that he is an individual with thoughts and feelings of his own, and that he doesn’t have to serve the Big Bad Guys. Sound familiar? We only had the Jem’Hadar introduced like six episodes prior, and while this is a good way to sort of explore their nature, it feels like we haven’t had enough time to explore the Dominion threat. I dunno. It’s an okay episode, and I like Odo sort of trying to mentor the kid and show him that life isn’t all about serving the Founders and killing people. In the end it doesn’t matter and they boy escapes to return home. There is a B-plot that is… odd. Jake is dating a girl who works at Quarks, and while they never state her age, she’s described as “older” relative to Jake, who is 16. Feels a little… bad!! It’s unfortunate because the scenes with Jake, Commander Sisko, and Mardah are kinda cute, and it’s a nice father-son moment for the Sisko boys, but the whole time I can’t help but think about the age gap.

Odo is mid-transformation behind a Cardassian with a disruptor. It's a sort of "teleports behind you" kind of moment. The Cardassian is oblivious. Caption reads "I'll take that."S03E05: Second Skin (3.5)
•	A very interesting and kind of harrowing episode. Kira is kidnapped and made to look like a Cardassian. The whole time she’s being grilled by the Obsidian Order to give up information about DS9 and Federation secrets and she’s not breaking. They’re basically trying to gaslight her the whole time, telling her that her memories are fake and she’s actually a Cardassian operative. Over and over, they drug her and try to convince her of this reality, and it’s a scary thought. A hallmark of my favorite kind of Star Trek episodes, they actually reveal this is just a decoy plot meant to draw out a Cardassian dissident who is supposed to be her father! Plans within plans, layers and layers of intrigue and subterfuge! I like when you get these layers of misdirection. Sometimes it comes off a little goofy, but this one does it really well. Kira escapes with the Cardassian dissident, and they actually form a sort of surrogate father-daughter relationship. It’s nice. It comes up later as well, and it’s another episode setting up the idea that the Cardassian political situation isn’t in the best place. We get some good acting, and I like to have a Kira focused episode occasionally. Good stuff.

Sisko and Odo are in Sisko's quarters, cooking up a fresh meal. Sisko is coaching Odo on how to stir a soufflé. Odo is INEXPLICABLY holding the whisk still and swishing around the bowl?? Caption reads "That's it."S03E04: Equilibrium (2.5)
•	It’s really interesting how Dax is generally one of my favorite characters, but a lot of her episodes are kinda mid! I think, to an extent, that the writers are still figuring how to tell a Trill story. This one feels really soap opera-y. What if Dax had a SECRET host in the past who was EVIL!!! She has these hallucinations and dreams and memories that lead her to discovering this, and they gotta go back to the Trill home world to treat her and figure out a mystery. They do some investigating and uncover a big secret that I actually think is the most interesting part of the episode. The whole lore with the Trill is that only a select few people are compatible hosts and there is a rigorous process to select the best of the best for joining. The twist in this episode is that actually like half of Trill society is compatible and there just aren’t enough symbionts to go around. I think this is fascinating! This is a race of aliens that has biologically evolved to have a symbiotic relationship with another organism, and then has socially evolved this complicated hierarchy and screening process to maintain order when there is an excess of possible hosts. In the episode they mention that the knowledge that a LOT of people are actually compatible would break down Trill society and the symbionts would become commodities. I love a good conspiracy. Anyways, the Jadzia specific parts of this episode are mostly okay, but the evil past host thing isn’t super compelling and makes for a relatively middling episode.

s3e3, the house of quark (3.5)
Quark is entering the Klingon High Council chambers. There is a red X shaped light behind him. He is wearing an oversized Klingon cape/vest thing. He is curtsying nervously and doing the Ferengi preying hands gesture.S03E03: The House of Quark (3.5)
•	This is a very silly episode on its face, but it’s a GREAT character moment for Quark! He gets all mixed up in Klingon noble house intrigue and infighting after a guy accidentally falls on a knife while trying to beat Quark’s ass. He gets married to the Klingon’s wife and has to fight in Klingon court for her to keep control of the house now called Quark. It’s also a great change of tone for the Klingon stuff. When we go to the High Council, shit is always so serious. This is a fucking funny episode though, and we get to watch comedic Klingons, which I think is a really great switch up! Quark being pulled around through Klingon rituals and shit is good fun, and he actually shows himself to care about someone else and help Grilka (even if it’s also within his own self-interest).

Odo and Quark are sharing quarters on the Defiant. Quark won't leave Odo alone, and Odo is not happy! Odo is very close to Quark, fists clenched, mouth agape in a guttural scream. Quark looks terrified. Caption reads "(roars)"S03E01-02: The Search (3)
•	This two-parter is sort of a continuation of the previous episode, but it isn’t like the season-spanning multi-part episodes of TNG, and this stands apart mostly. We open with the reveal of the Defiant, the ship that DS9 gets to use in lieu of a full-on starship. They gotta go to the Gamma Quadrant and negotiate peace with the Dominion. Part one is mostly an exploration into Dominion space, with some stuff being set up, like Defiant, Odo’s need to go to the Omarion Nebula, and dodging the Jem’Hadar under cloak. It ends with an action-packed cliffhanger, and part two is where a lot of the meat is. Odo finally finds his home! Yay! They’re evil! No!! While he is jacking off or whatever with the other Changelings, Sisko is experiencing a peace treaty process back on DS9 (this turns out to be a simulation). They’re testing humanity to see how they would react to peace talks, thinking that the Federation isn’t truly interested in a peace that involves submitting to the Dominion. Same as always, the two-part format struggles to take proper advantage of its runtime, as the first part feels like setting up for the dense second part. I don’t dislike this formula necessarily, but the imbalance means one of the episode will always feel almost incomplete. The TNG season closer/opener two-parters tended to avoid this a little bit, as the distance between releases meant each episode had to stand well enough on its own, I think. There will be good ones soon though!
