My op-ed in the @latimes.com today: "Monstrifying narratives have been undermining the possibility of a more inclusive body politic for millennia. But there’s an antidote to us-them messages of hate, fear and exclusion that claim that only a tiny minority of people are truly human." 1/2 🗃 #politics

Contributor: Why 'monstrify'? Look at who benefits when few are considered fully human
The category of 'human' is shrinking as politicians, tech bros and right-wing pundits divide the world into two groups: You're a cis-het white man, or you're a monster.

Colonialism is the ultimate cause of #extinction for so many species (in much of the world, introduced predators, habitat-loss, overhunting etc are all consequences of #colonialism), but it's rare for that link to be made explicit in #museums' labels, like with @mnhn.fr's #thylacine here. 👌
The taxidermy thylacine on display at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris A screen shot of the label (with the English translation overlaid):
"After the colonization of Tasmania by the English, the thylacine was persecuted because it was considered a predator of sheep.

Dubbed the Tasmanian Wolf, it gained an overblown reputation as a ferocious predator. For many years, bounties..."

I have officially indoctrinated @mutanttheorist.bsky.social into the way of puzzling! She completed this 500 piece pokemon puzzle 🥰 I only did a couple pieces, I swear 👀
A circular 500 piece jigsaw puzzle, with a sleeping Snorlax in the centre, Pikachu napping on his tummy while Bulbasaur and Charmander sleep on the grass. There is also Squirtle, Evee, Jigglypuff, and Robombee playing in the background. Around the edge of the puzzle is pastel coloured flowers, and Pikachu, Evee, and Pokéball shaped cupcakes

My first completed puzzle of the year! Santa Paws by HOP ❤️🐾 both my most and least favourite thing about HOPs jigsaws are their uniquely shaped pieces which look lovely but definitely add to the challenge 😅
A completed jigsaw puzzle picturing a snowy scene with 5 dogs and 4 cats looking into the sky at Santa's Sleigh, with Santa and a black and white collie sitting inside. A close-up of two cats in the puzzle, one of the pieces looks like an angel, while two other pieces are shaped like teddy bears.A close-up of two dogs in the puzzle. Alternative puzzle shapes include a tree, a star, a dove a snowman and a teddy bear.A close-up up of the puzzle showing a Jack Russel terrier type dog. Inside the dog is a star shaped puzzle.

There are quite a lot of reasons to be concerned about genAI that don’t get as much mention. This is a list of just a few that we've listed in our @aimod.social docs.
Consent
Al-generated images involving the likeness of real individuals without consent.
Misinformation
Al-generated images in spreading misinformation or manipulating users.
Training Data
Numerous generative Al services have used data for training that was not appropriately licensed, or the source of their training data was not clearly identified.
Mimicry of Living Artists
Al imagery can replicate the style or work of active living artists, which may directly impact individual creators.
Resource consumption
The generation of Al imagery requires substantial resources, like water and electricity.
Exploitive labor
Reports indicate Al training involves unethical labor practices.
