I thought it was really cool that the art museum's app had a "Queer(ing) Art" audio tour it really helped me narrow down what to visit in such a huge museum
Audio tour by Ari Gutierrez-Sanchez: "This is Jupiter and Callisto, attributed to Karel Philips Spierincks in the early 1600s. Here we have Zeus disguised as Artemis, and he is wooing Callisto with the help of Cupid, and all the way over to the right, we have Callisto, being grabbed by Hera by the hair, in retribution for this unfortunate union.

So in this case, Jupiter is disguising himself as his daughter Artemis to Woo the Nymph Callisto. Callisto was one of the followers of Artemis and in this situation, believing that Artemis is wooing her, she ends up laying with Zeus and eventually mothering his child. These followers of Artemis were plenty of women that just were entranced by her lifestyle, entranced by who she was.

The part that honestly angers me about this piece, that I'm really passionate about, is looking all the way to the right at how Juno is ripping Callisto from this scene. This is Zeus's transgression, and yet Callisto has this force that, in her eyes, led to Jupiter's temptation. Juno, being portrayed as this jealous wife, rips her away and ends up destroying this life that she's built for herself.

I would say it brings a great outrage to me, and especially as a trans woman, it feels like there's this angle of Transness or gender as transgression or gender as deception, and seeing this man shifting into his daughter for this situation just to woo a woman, just to encroach on her space, it reminds me of a lot of the discourse around trans women being predatory and enforcing this mentality that trans women are men in disguise. So it's, it's difficult to see, it's difficult to bite into, but I think it's a really important story.

So I believe that in highlighting all of this queer art in the museum and celebrating it and analyzing it through a queer lens, we're understanding ourselves a little more, and we are truly creating a more expansive culture and view of the art that we have in the museum."Audio tour by Danny Sargent: "So walking into the room, you see these four statues in the four corners of the room. We're looking at a statue of 'Autumn as Bacchus'. He is sort of holding his arm in front of his chest. He's got a sort of crown of grapes and grape leaves. He's got a sort of a cape or a shawl over one shoulder, and he appears to be holding a tureen and a bunch of grapes in one hand.

It's part of a series, but I wanted to talk about Autumn as Bacchus because this is a piece that I'm always drawn to anytime I walk through this gallery.

The first time I saw this piece from a distance, I wasn't really sure if it was intended to be male or female. And that's something that always attracts me in a piece of art. Androgyny is always very intriguing to me as a nonbinary person myself. And so the way that Bacchus is posed here when you see him from a distance, he's got sort of like his hip cocked out, and he's got his arm covering his chest so you really can't see a lot of defining secondary sex characteristics. All you see is this really beautiful face. They did not have to make him that pretty. He has almost sort of delicate features, not as overtly masculine as like compared to Saturn and, again, the way that he's posed. He's not extremely muscular. He doesn't have extremely broad shoulders. He's got sort of a smaller waist and wider hips. It's something that makes you take a second look.

Generally you don't actually see Bacchus as depicted as pretty as he is here. I think he's usually more like obviously male. So that's another thing about this that intrigues me is the way that they've chosen to depict Bacchus here. But he is the god of wine. I believe he's the god of theater. He's the god of general merriment. As a queer person, I sort of relate to some of those aspects that Bacchus represents, in that sort of like, freedom of expression."The Education of Achilles and Chiron Instructing Achilles in the Bow, Giovanni Battista Cipriani (Italian, 1727-1785)

The piece is hanging top and center above a doorway in the exhibit:

Drawing Room from Lansdowne House

Designed by Robert Adam (Scottish, 1728-1792); Painted decoration by Giovanni Battista Cipriani (Italian, 1727-1785); Painted decoration by Antonio Zucchi (Italian, 1726–1795); Gilded by Joseph Perfetti (Italian, active London from 1760-1778)Jackie (Four Jackies) and Shot Orange Marilyn by Andy Warhol

Audio tour by Adam Rizzo: "My name is Adam Rizzo, and I'm a Museum Educator here at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

The artwork is by Andy Warhol. It was made in 1964. Andy Warhol is probably one of the most recognizable artists of the 20th century. A leader in Pop art.

Andy Warhol's work, a lot of it was rooted in this idea of mass reproduction. So, you know, printmaking is one way to mass reproduce images, and he called his studio the factory. And the factory wasn't just an art-making space-it was also a space for socializing, for the community to come together, for Queer artists, in particular, express themselves and kind of challenge the dominant kind of conservatism of the mainstream culture.

So what we're seeing here is four screen printed reproductions on canvas, photographs taken of Jackie Onassis Kennedy, around the time of the assassination of her husband, former President John F. Kennedy.

I think one thing that's so kind of iconic about Jackie O is her particular cadence and accent and also her, her wonderful style that she was renowned for. I think a lot of folks kind of really respond to the kind of extravagance of Jackie O and her uniqueness.

I grew up in New York City, and Jackie O, she lived on the Upper East Side, and she was, you know, still quite active in public life and was, the kind of, I would say, like, the Grand Dam of like Fifth Avenue, and I remember that growing up and I always was interested in her.

I think that it's interesting to think about Jackie O as in relation to kind of modern-day tabloid culture. I think Andy Warhol was kind of ahead of the curve in recognizing the way in which like popular culture kind of like consumes people's private lives, I guess, and then kind of spits it out back for our enjoyment and entertainment."

Some of my favorite pieces from the Philadelphia Art Museum's exhibit: "Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100"
The Six Elements, 1929, René Margritte

Audio tour by Matthew Affron: "Toward the end of the 1920s, two painters, René Magritte from Belgium and Salvador Dalífrom Spain, came to Paris and joined the Surrealist group. They laid the groundwork for new approaches to challenging notions of reality and expanding the imagination in Surrealist art.

The Six Elements, painted by Magritte in 1929, is a painting within a painting, and as you can see, it has six compartments. Everything is in a sharp, crisp, deliberately expressionless, and very evidently controlled style. This feels very far away from spontaneous Surrealist automatism. And yet, Magritte's goal was not really different. He also wanted to make us question our sense of how things are in the world.

Magritte used not only images, but also words and his titles to raise these questions. The title The Six Elements, for example, calls to mind a system of classification such as the four classical elements of earth, air, fire, and water. And some of the images in this painting do relate to things like fire, and air, and so on. And still, we do not grasp any simple meaning. Whatever the connections between the six elements in the painting may be, they appear as mysterious and absurd."My Grandparents, My Parents, and I, 1936, Frida Kahlo

Audio tour by Danielle Cooke: "In 1938, André Breton, Surrealism's chief spokesman, came to Mexico City for a lecture tour. There he met the painter Frida Kahlo. Inspired by her work, he began to promote it internationally.

Here we're looking at a 1936 painting by Frida Kahlo entitled, My Grandparents, My Parents, and I (Family Tree). While the painting's style is relatively realistic, Kahlo's imaginative triple depiction of her young self at three different developmental stages of life resonates with the Surrealist sense of fantasy.

In the lower left corner of the composition, she's an ovum at the moment of fertilization. Just above, she appears as a fetus connected by umbilical cord to the abdomen of Kahlo's mother, Matilde Calderón y Gonzalez, who wears a white wedding dress and stands beside her father, Guillermo Kahlo. And finally, Kahlo appears as a toddler who strangely towers over the courtyard of her family home in Mexico City, La Casa Azul or the Blue House. She holds a shiny, blood red ribbon that extends to the floating likenesses of her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Together they represent both sides of Kahlo's Mexican and European family heritage. The landscape also speaks to this blending, with a Mexican cactus and prickly pear appearing on the left, and the blue Atlantic Ocean on the right, referring to the artist's father's German-Jewish origins.

Here, Kahlo is highlighting her own mestizaje - a mixing of cultural and ethnic groups that was central to the development of modern Mexican identity in the wake of the 1910-20 Mexican Revolution.

This unusual arrangement of figures, some floating in the sky, recalls the retablo, a type of small devotional or votive painting that was a form of Mexican arte popular, or folk art, in the 1700s and 1800s. Kahlo collected over 2,000 of these depictions of Catholic subjects and miraculous events often painted on tin."Birthday, 1942, Dorthea Tanning

Audio tour by Danielle Cooke: "The Surrealists were always interested in myth, magic, and the occult as ways to see beyond the ordinary. This strand of Surrealist thinking really came to the fore in the 1940s and 1950s.

You're looking at a painting made in 1942 by the American artist Dorothea Tanning, called Birthday.

She entered the New York Surrealist circle in the early 1940s. This painting is a self-portrait of the artist. She wears a silky, sumptuous, Jacobean style costume, with a jacket opened to expose her chest. If you look closely, her mossy green skirt appears to be composed of plant-like tendrils and tiny, writhing human bodies.

The thumb of one hand is hooked into the waist of her skirt, while the other hand grasps the knob of an open door. Beyond it, we see a seemingly infinite number of doors and thresholds, symbolizing the Surrealist realm of the unknown. A furry brown and white winged creature suggesting a witch's familiar, or an attendant or guardian to a sorceress, crouches at her feet.

According to the artist, the title Birthday was suggested by the Surrealist artist Max Ernst, who viewed the painting while it was still on the easel in her studio. The title encourages us to interpret the work as Tanning's depiction of herself reborn as a Surrealist. In painting her mystical alter ego, Tanning places herself in conversation with the longstanding Surrealist association of women with magic in the occult."Male and Female, 1942-43, Jackson Pollock

Audio tour by Matthew Affron: "During World War II, many Surrealists

chose to go into exile from France, and to live and work overseas. New York became Surrealism's wartime capital. A circle of American painters there, including Jackson Pollock, became very interested in Surrealist ideas and techniques and adapted them in new ways.

Let's take a look at Jackson Pollock's Male and Female, dated 1942 to 1943. This painting is not easy to make out. Its forms are ambiguous. Parts of it look more like writing than painting, but two symbolic figures are clearly visible standing in the center.

They both display both male and female attributes, an element of erotic tension and opposition. Their moon shaped heads can be considered symbols of nighttime, and perhaps of dreaming or the unconscious. The paintings' cryptic markings have the look of Surrealist automatic drawing.

This picture also can be seen in terms of Pollock's deep interest in American Indigenous art forms. Pollock was originally from Wyoming. He deeply admired Native American art and culture. He was interested in the folklore of Pueblo peoples. He was interested in the masks, pictographs, and in the culture and art of the Southwest. Without necessarily making a tight connection to any singular source, we can say that Pollock's Male and Female is an adaptation of expressive forms, symbols, rhythms, and mythical concepts that he found in various forms of American Indigenous art.

Pollock admired these art forms for their visual qualities, but no less for what he saw as the grandeur of their mythological content and their aura as vessels of connection to a spirit world. Pollock's belief that ancient Indigenous American art could be a source of concepts bigger than the confining rationalism of modern thinking was very much in tune with the European Surrealists.
