My word, there's some spectacular imagery coming down from Artemis II. Truly awe-inspiring.

I can't quite believe it - we're actually doing it. We're doing exploration! Congrats to the teams.

Best of luck to the crew of Artemis II. I've waited a long, long time for this. Let's go and explore space once again. I'm ready. Godspeed!

Rest In Peace to the crew of STS-51L Challenger on the 40th anniversary of their passing. As NASA stands on the precipice of the most risky human spaceflight mission of the past half century, we remember not only the Challenger crew, but also the hard learnt lessons of the Challenger disaster.

NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim (who landed from space this morning aboard Soyuz MS-27) is currently over Turkey en-route back to Houston aboard NASA's Gulfstream V jet. He'll be making a fuel stop in Glasgow, Scotland.

Today on the ISS, for the first time ever, all 8 available Visiting Vehicle ports (x4 on Russian Segment, x2 berthing and x2 docking on US Segment) are in use simultaneously! (Image credit: orbital-velocity.com)

Congrats to Blue Origin for the landing/recovery of New Glenn's 1st stage! It's good to have more than one company that can now do this!

HTV-X1 was captured and berthed to ISS today! There are now 7 vehicles docked/berthed to Station (tied record from 2024). If schedules hold, when Soyuz MS-28 docks in late November, all 8 available ports will be occupied for the first time -- a new record!

Great to see HTV-X arrive at the ISS (and by my count, this is the last ever time we'll see a brand new type of Visiting Vehicle arrive at the ISS).

NASA is now faced with the perfect storm: Russia effectively at war with the west, Musk gone off the rails, radio silence on Starliner, Artemis still not operational, and an administration intent on killing science.

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
Hopefully we are witnessing the downfall of Elon Musk. I don't think there's any way back for him now in the court of public opinion - he's alienated himself from pretty much all sides, apart from his wacky die-hard fans on X. I only hope that SpaceX can decouple from him in time - but I fear not.

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 05/06/2025
Wow, who could have foreseen that Musk & Trump, two of the biggest narcissistic, egotistical assholes to walk the earth, would fall out? No-one saw that one coming. It's almost as if the "smartest man alive" isn't actually that smart... 🙄

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 31/05/2025
Well, that's the end of NASA I think. RIP. Space exploration is now in the hands of billionaires and China.

Despite Musk's rhetoric that ISS is nearing the end of its life, that's far from the truth IMO - the US Segment has many years of life left I think. Its modular nature has allowed it to be upgraded over the years – for example, it has a fully upgraded system of batteries and solar arrays.

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
In 2011, when Shuttle retired, NASA found itself dependent upon and beholden to a partner (Russia) whose behaviour was increasingly becoming belligerent and erratic. The irony is, nearly 15 years later, NASA now finds itself in exactly the same position - only this time the "partner" is Elon Musk.

So, as expected, Trump's FY26 budget proposal effectively guts NASA and turns it into the SpaceX Contracting Agency. You know, it's almost as if Elon wrote the budget himself....

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
This is an extremely dumb move - reducing ISS research & crew at a time when the station is at it's most capable (and still improving). With reduced crewing requirements, Starliner may well be dead in the water too.

FFS THEY ARE NOT STRANDED!!! So sick of reading these BS headlines. This is literally fake news. Mainstream media do themselves no favours when they post rubbish like this.

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 07/03/2025
Just an observation: 10 yrs ago colonising Mars seemed an idealist, noble goal - taking the best of humanity & building a new society free of Earth's divisions. Now I'm increasingly seeing people criticise it as a billionaire playboy pursuit – the wealthy abandoning Earth to start an elitist society

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 07/03/2025
And one more thing: I'm so sick & tired of reading headlines about the "stranded astronauts". THEY ARE NOT, AND NEVER HAVE BEEN AT ANY POINT, STRANDED!!! This is why people say that mainstream media is "fake news" - they don't help their case when they post BS headlines like this.

I'm gonna say it now: Starship is a stupid lunar lander. It's a great concept for other uses, but for lunar landings it's just too tall. Vehicles that are tall/top-heavy really can't cope with uneven terrain - landers that have a wide base are a much better design.
040
Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 07/03/2025
I think most people don't realise just how long it's going to take to A) develop a fully human-rated ECLSS for Starship (capable of supporting Mars missions), and B) to build a safety case for putting humans on the vehicle given it's novel propulsive landing technique.

Caribbean countries should lodge a protest at the UN about being showered by debris like this. This is why launch regulations exist. It's only a matter of time before somebody gets hurt.

I read now that the "increasing number of anomalies" line is being used as an excuse to bail on ISS early, but IMO this is just a case of facts being found to supprt a predetermined political case. Anomalies can be expected from a ship that's 25+ years old, but none of them are critical to safety.

Pete Harding @spacepete.bsky.social · 07/03/2025
Elon's plan to cancel SLS and go all-in on Starship is not looking so clever now huh. For what it's worth, I fully support Starship and I believe SpaceX will figure it out eventually, but I think it'll be 10+ years before Starship is ready to carry crew.

If I were Jared Isaacman, at this point I'd be seriously considering whether I could serve under President Trump. Of course it's his decision to make, and for what it's worth I think he's a reasonable, level-headed guy who'd make a great NASA Administrator.

I don't think I've ever witnessed anybody burn their bridges with their fanbase the way Musk has done with the space community over the past 12 months. He's always been a controversial and somewhat zany figure, and I liked him back in the early days when he was the disruptor rocket scientist.

Space has become so politicised in the last few months I think, unfortunately space exploration is becoming more associated with billionaires than it is with NASA. I love SpaceX, but we need to separate it from this toxic cult of Musk.
