Private Marcelino Serna became the most decorated WWI soldier in Texas history. He single-handedly killed 26 enemy soldiers, captured 24 more, and was personally awarded the Distinguished Service Cross by General Pershing.He never got the Medal of Honor. His commanding officer said he was “just a buck private” who couldn’t write English well enough.He came home and went to work at a packing plant. He tended his flower garden. He almost never talked about the war.His name was Marcelino Serna.
