Happy Thanksgiving Weekend from our pumpkin patch to yours. Still a day away but the onions sautéing in butter and summer savoury for make-ahead dressing is the start of the holiday kitchen scents. 🙂🙏🍗

Head in the clouds. A trio of hues, whites and blues.
A jet with contrail emerges from clouds to pierce a cloudless blue sky. Layers of light and dark white clouds of various shapes, some thick and others wispy, with blues between. Wispy clouds against a blue sky.

The Lighthouse Route. Stop by a sign on the side of the road, follow an unmarked path (are we treth-pathing?). Bury me under a tree by the sea…found one of my own great-great-great grandpas.
An old sign that says Pioneer Cemetery 1791-1908. A grassy path of overhanging branches and ferns, a body of water is visible at the end of the path. A cluster of old gray headstones on grass next to a bay. One is under a large tree. All are leaning, one has fallen. An old gravestone, light stone and simple design of lettered engraving. In Memory of Henry Creasor died 1889 aged 69 years. An ancestor on my dad’s side, I’ve already outlived him, but not by much.

Day-Trippin' Yeah Just a few snaps from a recent spin down the river, our outings usually include lunch. (Captions in Alt) Kingsburg, Hirtle's Beach, Rose Bay.
Who mows there? A steep seaside cliff, sandy rock and green grass with a tall tree on opposite sides of a wooden fence, foamy sea water coming in over the beach rocks. Blue Mooooo-in. A large cow sculpture on a lawn along the road, it is blue with some yellow flowers but otherwise a realistic cow including udders. A background of green and yellow shrubbery. You looking at me? A couple of beach rocks on brown sand with sea bubbles. One rock is white with red and brown veins, the bubbles are shaped like sunglasses with reflections.I had the salad. A small square white bowl with greenery peeking out from under pulled pork, cashews and sesame seeds. In the blurred background is a lobster roll, with onion rings to share.

A few dreamy colours for a dreary day.
A red cardinal on a suet cage with green leaves to the sides. Purple lavender on green stems with blurred yellow coneflower behind. A fall mum. Bright red with tiny yellow centers. Red fall leaves in the yard on red maples.

Hirtle's Horizon" Nothing but ocean from here to Cape Town (or so it seems). The pure and simple beauty of sea and sky, endless possibilities to imagine. (A still photo taken from drone footage shot by husband Mike at Hirtle's Beach, NS.) #SouthShoreNS #NovaScotia #SeaAndSky
A simple wide landscape photo of ocean on the bottom half and sky above, beyond the surf the ocean is calm and blue, the sky is cloudy with blue tints.

Today we drove along a beautiful river, had a delicious bistro lunch, visited two beaches and a pioneer graveyard...burned less than a quarter-tank of gas. The South Shore is really a great day-tripping place to live. ❤️🙏🌊

Just passing through… Backyard wildlife.
Close up of a snowshoe hair, light tan fur and brown eyes. The same hare but more of its body and ears in this photo. A white-tailed deer in low light, partially hidden by a bush but its head and growing antlers are visible. It’s a buck. Another deer walking the path behind the garden, most of its body is visible including the white of its tail. Looking at the photographer with curiosity but not fear. This one’s a doe.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Borbs Love the puffy little rounds (big ones too).
A chipping sparrow sitting on gravel, likely a fledgling. It has an angry look but still cute. A Ruffed Grouse on the ground, very puffed up and round (sometimes they look more like a thin wild chicken). The feather pattern is very colourful, light to dark browns and corals. A black and white Dark-Eyed Junco on the ground, looking very spherical. A chickadee on a branch, this one is quite round with its winter fluff.

And since it’s September in Nova Scotia, we went to the beach. Not very crowded, people who think it’s cold here all the time must be staying away. 🤫😊

Fall is coming to the tiny lake in the woods. Water levels are very high, a rubber boot day. The wet summer also brought back the fungi, the understory of fall colours.

Deep shades of September skies, leaves of oaks and maples hanging in there for now.
Deep red sunset in the background of dark leaf silhouettes. Same scene but not as close, with some lighter sky above the sunset and more leaves in the foreground.

Half moon, nighttime sky Seven stars, heaven's eyes Seven songs on seven seas Just to bring all your sweet love home to me
An almost perfect half moon high in the dark deep blue southern sky, silhouettes of tall pine tops below. The words are a lyric from the song Half Moon sung by Janis Joplin, songwriters John and Johanna Hall.

Tonight in the home kitchen, panko-crusted pan-fried haddock on ciabatta, slice of red onion, tomato and lettuce, tarragon mayo. Inspired by a similar dish enjoyed at the Grand Banker in Lunenburg. Fish was fresh off the truck, that’s the ticket. 😋🐟

“Mediterranean Pizza” tonight, an old favourite. Simple flatbread crust, brushed and grilled with a sauce of olive oil infused with garlic and fresh herbs, topped with sautéed sweet onion, tomato slices and assorted cheeses, back on the grill til hot and melty. 🍕😋

I’ve referenced this book before, written in 1935. I purchased it as an e-book which can be searched for phrases like “five thousand dollars”. Many examples in the book of history repeating and yes, it can sadly and indeed happen there (but hopefully not here). 😔🙏🇨🇦
A book cover of “It Can’t Happen Here”, black background with a deep red graphic of the US flag and the author’s name, Sinclair Lewis. A screen shot of three places where five thousand dollars appears in the book text - people asking for it, the politician promising it again, and finally admitting that they were not going to get it.

Sun rain sun, literally watching grass grow. Not going for a golf green, just a patch of green. Week 1, seed mix is peeking through, still covered with straw. (Aside: Grew up hearing the authentic Lunenburg accent so the "r" in straw is almost silent but more like on the roof of your mouth.)

Squeaking in two for #birdoftheday theme of #inflight (it's also #nationalhummingbirdday) I wish they'd learn to share, but the territorial instinct is strong. Also, a lone loon. We miss seeing and hearing them on the lake, but even there we didn't often see them overhead, they prefer to swim.
Two hummingbirds flying over a red feeder, one chasing the other. A lone loon in flight against soft clouds and light blue sky.

Finally said good-bye to the landworks company yesterday, big job but you'd still have to see the before and after to appreciate what we spent on dirt and rocks. They raced the rain to finish up - topsoil, seed and straw - our front lawn is a field of gold. 😊

The new perennial garden was appreciated by the intended audience. September signals the gradual retreat but many backyard visitors stick it out with us year round, birds and small critters will appreciate seeds and shelter of spent blooms and grasses. Small spaces, big impact. 🙏🐝🌺 🦋 #nature #garden

Dolly Parton was a legend on so many levels - sweet voice, kind soul, awesome songwriter and humble philanthropist. As a kid, I think the first song of hers I learned to sing and play on guitar was “Tennessee Mountain Home” a sweet old-timey country song in a simpler place and time. 🎶😔❤️

Half-full moon in a half-blue sky, an optimistic view.
As described in the post, a white half moon just overing above a bank of thin but solid white clouds with clear blue skies above. Similar shot but closer view of the moon.

Got the steamroller blues this morning. Driveway work is at the pack-down-the-gravel stage and it sounds and feels like a giant sub-woofer firing up during a minor earthquake while a jumbo jet taxis through the yard. Coyotes and other cartoon characters best stay clear.

An unusual sun tonight, almost looked like the moon. There must be some smoke in the air which isn't a good thing, but makes for dramatic skies and a good close to the week.
A perfectly round sun behind some leaves. A pale blue sky with hints of pink and orange, It is hazy enough to photograph without being blinded by light. A series of three photos of the sun framed by trees, all similar but with different amounts of light and zoom.

🎶 I got sunshine, on a cloudy day 🎶 Some rain moving in this afternoon, the flowers and fluffy bees will love it.
A clump of yellow coneflower. Bright yellow petals on green stems with darker centers against a blurred background of rock. There are some new blooms starting to bud on the stems. One of the same flowers close up with a bumble bee on it. The bumble bee has a dark butt on its bottom half but the top is a soft yellow and looks quite soft and fluffy up close.

The daytime sun has been too scorching hot but the summer sunsets are still pretty cool. Setting sun with sky, clouds and trees…always a nice combination. Hoping you’re able to keep cool on this warm Friday night.
A dark orange sunset with a small round sun between the trees, lighter sky with clouds and a hint of blue above. Similar photo with different zoom and angle. This one has a darker sun peeking through a hole where dark tree leaves and branches meet.

Happy Exhibition Parade Day for local Bridgewater and area folks. Some years it fell on my Mom's birthday. That's her in the back seat next to the clown, me in the cowboy hat, fun times. She was one of a kind. 🥰🥂🎂
A black and white photo of an old buggy with large wooden wheels, three women in dresses and fancy hats are seated in the back, a small umbrella over their heads. There is a man in a clown suit standing beside the buggy and another man in front of the buggy in a tuxedo and hat. A child in a cowboy hat is sitting on the floor of the buggy and peeking out for the photo. There are a few houses and cars in the background, the year was likely 1967. There's a sign in front that says 1867 and "Born 30 Years Too Soon".

It seems an odd flaw of nature that in a backyard full of friendly flowers and five seats at the sugar-water table, two hummingbirds will expend most of their energy trying to deny the other a sip.
