Two weeks ago we were able to build an amphibian pond with the Amphibian & Reptile Conservancy! We modified this old stock pond to create habitat for amphibians and waterfowl. And the bison have easier access to the water as well with more sloped banks. Stay tuned for a video of the full process!

Taking it easy! 🐢 This gorgeous ornate box turtle is a true prairie resident. Found across the Great Plains and eastern Colorado, these land turtles live primarily in open grasslands. They burrow underground during hot summer days to stay cool and save body water. Should we do the same?

Check this out, a long-billed curlew on the prairie?! This bird is often found in wetlands, tidal estuaries, mudflats, flooded fields, and beaches. But...they breed in areas with sparse, short grasses, including shortgrass and mixed-grass prairies as well as agricultural fields!

Southern Plains Land Trust @southernplainslt.bsky.social · 28/07/2026

Did you know pronghorn fawns are born scentless? Pronghorn usually give birth to twins. Mom will hide the fawns separately in the grass (or in this case the road) and leave them while she grazes. Their lack of scent keeps them hidden from predators. 📸 by Julianna Ellis

What brings you joy? Is it the sun shining through a clump of sunflowers in the evening light? The song of a meadowlark on a cool morning? The howl of a coyote over a sky filled with stars? The prairie has so many joys to be discovered--but only if you slow down enough to notice. 📸 Julianna Ellis
