Not dead. Just had holiday and other life things. Teletext recovery work continues but I've had a bad run of Broken tapes, DVD to VHS bootlegs, home videos and piss poor quality C5 recordings.... Yet, we march forward

Don't talk to me... I just realised that I've wasted an hour of having to listen to The Bill when the teletext capture wasn't even running

Sometimes fun things fall out of tapes, like this unused loyalty card for Little Chef! From 1992! I'll get a proper scan of it shortly, but if anyone wants this piece of ephemera let me know!

Televox was an early "interactive" Teletext service on Oracle and I've just spent my evening researching it and writing all about it on my website with a gallery from a pretty clean recovery from 1991 :) computer-legacy.com/teletextgall...

You may or may not know that I also digitise a lot of the Teletext recovery tapes, and have been collecting the adverts for longer than I've been doing recoveries. All adverts are on Internet Archive away from the pesky hands of YouTube, we're at 2,610 items currently archive.org/details/uk-a...

I'd love to recover something like this one day, the closest I've reached so far is 1996 Disneytext thanks to a tape from @spikeatkinson.bsky.social which included a lot of, well, Disney stuff :P computer-legacy.com/res/teletext...

Here's a bit of music news from a Teletext recovery just processed from 24th May 2005, all about the Crazy Frog's likelihood of beating Coldplay in the charts! (which did come to be true!) Once squashed this gives fantastic results with many perfect pages! computer-legacy.com/res/teletext...

Teletext tape #167 gives us Neighbours, sometimes interrupted by Songs of Praise, then more Neighbours. My neighbours probably think ive lost my mind...

#166 is an example of how this whole Teletext ordeal can be quite interesting, a documentary about the life of Joyce Grenfell has been rather enjoyable and I will certainly seek out more of her work.

Clearing up some files following rebuilding my home server, and have come across this scan I made of this advert for #Time computers, which although never owning one at the time - I have a fond affinity for. I'm pretty certain I have one of these machines, well the case at least...

More Teletext recoveries processed tonight, with this really nice one from 10th October 1992 where someone asks about what will replace the beloved Oracle, with the initially confusing Teletext service "Teletext on 3" and "Teletext on 4"

Tape #164 inserted, the paper included states Trooping The Colour 2011 which you might think as too late and potentially a DTV recording but alas Teletext is present! Albeit in LP...

#163 done for Teletext capture... Godfather 2, ITV Telethon 88 and Time Bandits Although this Scotch claim of fantastic quality at 2,000 recordings seems a bit far fetched!

#161 is a 1988 Scotch tape, with a medley of Christmas programs featuring Mr Bean, Dame Edna, Jeremy Beadle and Victor Meldrew.. all in wonderful SP!

Teletext recovery continues this evening. This is what is known as a TDK Dolphin. Which is can be sometimes snubbed as they were one of the most common blank tape stocks of the 2000s. Often LP and frequently give a poor quality recording. However useful to fill in the final days of Teletext!

With #teletext you never had to muck about with CAPTCHAs. The 30 second or so wait for your selected page to appear was much more bearable in comparison.

A teletext page with the header "captchoozle!".

At the top of the page is the prompt "to verify you are a human, select the image of a car". There are a group of four large icons arranged as a two by two grid of black icons on white rectangular backgrounds. Each icon has a prompt above consisting of a coloured square and the name of that colour next to the square.

The icons are of a tram with a "red" prompt, a tractor with a "green" prompt, a car with a "yellow" prompt and a lorry with a "blue" prompt.

#157 produced a lot of firsts, and now we are finally onto #158 a TDK "Dolphin" with a recovery from 2006. Late Teletext services often include sad notices like this...

Moving onto #157, and we're back in the 1980's with a very clean recovery from 2nd June 1988 with this neat artwork by Anthony Purvis of Holbury under the 4-Tel section celebrating ITV Telethon '88 computer-legacy.com/res/teletext...

Tape #156 which was previously mentioned as #146, which was a real turd to get to track properly has so far revealed two missing days (14th September 1999 and 7th August 2001) in very mediocre quality... just shows what you can get from poor quality tapes #Teletext

sound.and.vision / Dan @sound-and-vision.bsky.social · 15/08/2026

To demonstrate that not every Teletext recovery comes out great, here is what #154 is giving me so far 😮‍💨 1986, BASF E240 tape, picture looked fine but nope, no luck. Thanks Hancock, i guess (This is the un-squashed content)

Tape #153 gives us one final "first" teletext recovery with another CEEFAX ORBIT service from 7th January 1981. Here's a review of the just released Flash Gordon movie. A relatively decent recovery, if for a few squiffy bits. computer-legacy.com/res/teletext...

Processing tape #153 now, which has brought forward the earliest teletext recovery I have made yet so far to this one of CEEFAX ORBIT from 11th December 1980! It's not a perfect recovery, but certainly very good for media that is 46 years old! computer-legacy.com/res/teletext...

#152 is now done, as expected with a good quality SP tape managed to get some good recoveries which will be added to the "teletext restoration" github repo. All ORACLE, but includes some dates not yet covered: C4 - 11th Feb 1988 - 🌟 FIRST 🌟 ITV - 4th January 1987 C4 - 9th May 1987 - 🌟 FIRST 🌟

No need for concern with the Teletext Recovery Unit (which is now its new name!). A friend donated his GTX 1660 Super to the cause and I've spent this afternoon configuring CUDA and benchmarking it. 550l/s is the best so far, limited by the weenie i3 CPU. But better than the 55l/s CPU only!
