I have a new comic out! “Hair” is a short story of figuring out who you are and how you want to be seen. Slice of life, queer vibes. Available this weekend at @tamperekuplii.bsky.social 💓

A comic zine “Hair” on top of a stack of comics.

A bunch of comics laid flat. On the center is displayed the back cover of the comic. It reads: “Hair is a short comic about figuring out who you are and how you want to be seen. Sebastian Sotavalta is a queer comic artist and illustrator and a designer living in Helsinki, Finland.” 🇫🇮

As a kid I wasn’t so picky when it came to queer media. #sotavaltart #comics #queerart

“I haven’t always been so sensitive about gay media though.”

As a child, I'd go to the library and look up all their books related to gay people and
homosexuality on the computer.

I read and watched everything I could find.
I didn't care about the genre, number of pages, anything.

Needless to say, lended up reading some pretty heavy stuff that probably wasn't meant for young readers.
Aids, prostitution, death, abuse...
Lots of the books I read were full of trauma.
But I was starved for those stories.

Later | graduated to movies.
Seeing men love each other on my tiny laptop was magical to me.
Though I quickly learned that relationships between men were doomed from the start.

Happy endings were reserved only for certain people.
But I just couldn't muster the slightest interest for those stories, even if I tried.
Movie after movie, I chose heartbreak.
It was the price of being seen.

This is an excerpt from my comic “Butt of the joke”. I drew it back in 2023 but the themes feel very current once again 🏒 #sotavaltart #comics #queerart

Panel 1: Establishing shot of two men sitting on a couch in a living room, each of them focusing on their own hobbies.

Panel 2: Eetu, a man with dark hair and beard asks: “Hey, should we watch that new ga tv show?”

Sebastian, man with long hair is apprehensive.

Panels 1 & 2: Sebastian: “This might sound weird… But watching new gay things gives me this weird anxiety.”

Panel 3: Sebastian: “Like, is it a joke? Is it a gay thing or a GAY thing? Was it made by gay prop or a well meaning straight ally?”

Panel 1: Sebastian: “And like… Is it meant… for me?”

Panel 2: Sebastian: “… I’m being weird.”

Panel 3: Eetu: “Actually…”

Panel 4: Eetu looks Sebastian into eyes: “I know exactly what you mean. 100%.”

Panel 1: Eetu: “I’ve felt that way many, many times.” Sebastian: “Oh?”

Panel 2: Eetu: “For an example, sometimes a movie that’s supposed to be great for gay people is full of weird homophobia.”

Panel 3: Sebastian: “Yeah, I just get so nervous about how queer people, especially gay men, are portrayed.”
