No one should be left to drown at sea. And rescuers should not be threatened. We stand in solidarity with the RNLI, its crews and volunteers. www.sosmediterranee.org/sos-mediterr...

Many had fled countries affected by war and insecurity. With safe routes unavailable, children and their families are forced onto dangerous journeys. No child should have to risk their life crossing the Mediterranean to reach safety.

More than half of those who disembarked were minors. Among them were twins who celebrated their sixth birthday aboard. Their mother told us it was a birthday neither she nor her children would ever forget.

Last night, 75 people, including 39 minors and 9 women, disembarked in Salerno after being rescued by the #OceanViking. Our teams had rescued 78 people in total. The previous day, a two-day-old newborn was medically evacuated with their mother and sister.

🔵 UPDATE: A mother, her daughter, and her newborn baby were medically evacuated with the support of an Italian Coast Guard patrol vessel to receive medical care on land. The other survivors are still receiving care on board the #OceanViking as it sails towards Salerno.

In Malta's Search and Rescue Region, "rescue" stands for ignorance. Most people who risk drowning here don't get saved - they get kidnapped by Libyan militias and disappear. Yesterday, Seabird 3 spotted a boat with 17 people in distress, and everyone knew what would come next.

Yesterday, following the three rescue operations that took place within 5 hours, Italian authorities assigned Salerno, two days of navigation away, as a Place of Safety.

The team then rescued 16 people following a Mayday Relay from SeaBird 3. They had spent 24h at sea. Later, the crew overheard a Mayday Relay from Frontex’s Falcon 1 and rescued 45 more people from a rubber boat, also spotted by SeaBird 3. They are receiving care on deck.

The first rescue followed a Mayday Relay matching a distress case reported by @alarmphone.bsky.social and later spotted by @seawatchitaly.bsky.social ’s SeaBird 3 aircraft. The 17 survivors had spent approximately 26 hours at sea.

Today, our team aboard the #OceanViking carried out 3 rescues of 17, 16 and 45 people in the Maltese SRR. Among the survivors are 12 women, a two-day-old baby and a five-month-old baby. All had heat exhaustion; some also had dehydration and fuel burns.

Focusing solely on the decrease in arrivals obscures this shift and the reality that people are increasingly being forced into longer and more perilous journeys. The invisibility of deaths at sea has become a structural feature of the Mediterranean crossing.
010
SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 04/09/2026
Another reality often left unmentioned is that these policies are pushing people onto longer and more dangerous routes, including the substantially longer journey from Libya to Crete, where search and rescue coverage is more limited.
110
SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 04/09/2026
Between January and August 2026, the number of people attempting the crossing dropped by 39%, from 59,150 to 35,912. However, the mortality rate rose from 1.5% to 2.6%.

While fewer people are attempting to cross the Central Mediterranean, what remains largely unsaid is that the risk of dying or going missing at sea has increased significantly.

🔴 Shots fired & people in the water. The so-called Libyan coastguard, backed by the EU, opened fire toward NGO ship Louise Michel - instead of recovering the two people who had gone overboard.

SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 27/08/2026
This week, Libyan Coast Guards fired shots in the vicinity of #LouiseMichel and threatened to shoot #Aurora. 1 year after the shooting of the #OceanViking, these events illustrate what we warned about: continued funding by EU & absence of accountability fostering impunity with deadly consequences.

These are not statistics: each person had a name, a story and loved ones waiting for answers.

SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 24/08/2026
Last week, our monitoring aircraft, Albatross, spotted 17 bodies floating at sea over several days - the latest sign of what may have been another invisible shipwreck. At least 910 people have died or gone missing in the Central Mediterranean this year alone.

SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 24/08/2026
These incidents put both people in distress and rescue crews at risk. They also make it increasingly dangerous for humanitarian organisations to carry out lifesaving operations at sea.
121
SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 24/08/2026
We are seeing a new and deeply worrying pattern in the Central Mediterranean. Between June and July 2026, unidentified boats and vessels belonging to Libyan actors approached SAR NGO vessels at high speed and followed them in international waters for extended periods.
141
SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 24/08/2026
The attack on the Ocean Viking was not an isolated incident. It took place in an increasingly hostile operational environment, where more and more Libyan actors are operating boats that threaten people in distress and rescue vessels.
131
SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 24/08/2026
SOS MEDITERRANEE has launched legal proceedings in Italy, France and Germany. We are also continuing to seek accountability through European institutions and United Nations mechanisms.
152
SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 24/08/2026
Instead, European funding, training and technical support for Libyan actors have continued and expanded.
131
SOS MEDITERRANEE @sosmediterranee.org · 24/08/2026
The attack badly damaged the Ocean Viking and left survivors and crew deeply traumatised. It should have led to an independent investigation, real accountability, and the suspension of EU support to LCG.

One year ago, our rescue vessel Ocean Viking came under heavy fire from the Libyan Coast Guard vessel Houn 664 while carrying 87 people we had been rescued at sea. A year later, no one has been held accountable.

Today, they are safe on land. But seeking safety & a better future should never depend on surviving a dangerous sea crossing. Safe pathways to #Europe are urgently needed. Their courage & resilience remind us that behind every rescue are people’s lives and stories that matter.

Later that evening, an Italian Coast Guard vessel requested support from Albatross to relay the position of ASSO VENTICINQUE to arrange a meeting point. The 57 survivors were safely transferred to Coast Guard vessel and later disembarked in Lampedusa.

ASSO VENTICINQUE rescued 57 people, including 7 women and 4 children. Survivors were reported to be in good condition, apart from dehydration, and the vessel was instructed by Italian authorities to proceed north.

Following alert from @alarmphone.bsky.social, monitoring aircraft Albatross located an overcrowded rubber boat adrift with around 50 people on board. The crew alerted the authorities and contacted the nearest vessel, the Italian-flagged supply vessel ASSO VENTICINQUE, requesting assistance.

Yesterday saw a remarkable demonstration of solidarity and commitment to maritime law. Through cooperation between a humanitarian aircraft, a merchant vessel and the Italian MRCC, around 68 people aboard two boats in distress were brought to safety.

UPDATE: Italian authorities have assigned #Ortona as the Place of Safety, where the 55 survivors aboard #OceanViking will disembark after 4 days of navigation. Distant port assignments prolong their time at sea and keep rescue ships away from areas where lives are at risk.

While SOS Humanity was nearby and ready to provide assistance, Libyan Coast Guard illegally ordered them to head north. The Libyan vessel, gifted by the #EU, was seen ramming into the rubber boat multiple times, and intercepting the people onboard.

But how has this shift influenced how legal obligations are interpreted, how rescue responsibilities are understood, and how people on the move are treated?
