I think maybe I got a couple of her albums as a gift grouped together, but I remember the cover of this one in particular so vividly. No wonder I had magenta streaks aged 11… In retrospect this explains a lot.
Avril Lavigne’s ‘The Best Damn Thing.’

Ode to Them featured one of my poems on their Instagram earlier this week, ‘little wisdom,’ written in response to their theme of rest. I’m so honoured to see it alongside so many other beautiful works 🌙💤🐱 See the full selection here: instagram.com/p/Db2uwCJiGpU/?igsh=MW5vamRsY3d1ZnZmMQ==o
A photograph of a ladder partially submerged in ocean water, attached to a wooden dock. The words ‘REST - Selected Works - Week 005’ are written in small white font, vertically on the left hand-side of the image. A graphic featuring two artworks; Rest by Divyadharshini, a photograph of a grey cat with a white muzzle sleeping on a stone floor, head resting on a forepaw, and little wisdom. by Sorren Briarwood, a poem reading as follows:

nestled in her bed of lamplight,
nose to tailtip,
she dreams
guiltlessly.
knowing that she is free to lay her tabby stripes down on the crisp, white sheets
whenever she pleases.

I’m struck by the wisdom of this little creature,
unbothered by the impetus to wring every second from the stubborn day.
from herself.
she takes instead what is freely given:
the dappled, soft-swaying, sunset,
birdsong pouring in through the open window,
and the buoyant tuft of thistledown, borne in on a summery sigh.

in answer
and with her own little sleepsigh,
she curls onto her back,
paws splayed happily,
asking nothing of herself
or the world she’s living in.

Had so much fun with my newest @medium.com article! This one’s about a lot of things: my earnest love of wandering aimlessly in #Skyrim, Studio #Ghibli and ma (間) in filmmaking and beyond, and the constant overstimulation of the digital world 🌍 Read it for free at medium.com/@sorrenbriarwood 🌲🌌🌙
A graphic showcasing a Medium article titled "Trust in Astonishment: In Search of Ma (間) Across Mediums." The graphic is azure with pink text. A pullquote from the article reads: "If storytellers [...] wish to create emotinoally resonant experiences, we must accept the fact that these experiences will be inescapably subjective." Text below reads: "Read for free on Medium ✦ Link in bio." The central image is a screencap of Skyrim, showing snow falling on a forest path, the night sky illuminated by an aurora in shades of pink, yellow, and green. The graphic is decorated with other collage-style cut-out images in mint-green and pink, including a game controllers, a film reel, a crystal, two discs, a luna moth, two star-shaped wax seals, and an enchanted glass sword from Skyrim.

Lyrics from The House Always Wins by Grace Petrie seem pertinent here… (NB: Nigel went to Dulwich College, which according to The Tab, was *more* expensive than Eton in 2023.)
A screenshot of lyrics reading:
“The first thing they teach at Eton is to recognize a mark
And they don't come no easier than desperate in the dark
A little smoke and mirrors, boys, you've got them on the hook
Blaming other folks for what you took
The biggest con-man came, and we were looking down at heel
A land of milk and honey, boys, an oven-ready deal
And every single architect is richer since we left
Our workers and our industries bereft
But when the dinghies got you tied up in knots
You don't worry 'bout the super yachts”

Happy #TransDayOfVisibility! In a moment of serendipity, I’ve a poem out with @lavenderrising.bsky.social about the fear and tenderness I feel for my siblings coming to terms with their identities at such a hostile time 🏳️‍⚧️💕🐇 Find it alongside fantastic queer art at onceuponaqueer.com/lavender-rising
The cover of the March 2026 edition of Lavender Rising, featuring a digital illustration titled “Trees Are Watching” by Elijah Berg; two figures rest against the trunk of the tree in a forest of yellow birch trees, one with a book resting open on their lap whilst another looks on over their shoulder. Text from an article reads: “Parents leading the Charge in Southern Africa.” The lower left corner includes the “Once Upon a Queer” publishing logo, with a silhouette of a book and quill splashed with rainbow colours.

It's Spring! 🌸 To celebrate I have a semi seasonally appropriate article up on Medium today about #ClimateChange, #SeasonCreep, and #AnimalCrossing as an unintentional period piece. Read for free at medium.com/@sorrenbriarwood/digital-snowflakes-animal-crossings-simulated-seasons-8bbba3598b6a ❄️🌷🌲

A quote below reads: "There's a dystopian irony in simulatin the world that we have ourselves unmade: trapping the beauty of [the seasons] behind not just a screen, but a paywall." Smaller text below reads: "Read for free on Medium ✦ Link in bio." The graphic is decorated with pink collage-style graphics and photos including a branch with cherry blossom flowers, a clock, striped gloves, a folded blanket, a butterfly, tulips, a video game controller, and a letter sealed with a heart sticker."

#DecemberTransReadathon is over- bet you thought you'd seen the last of me 😎 I knew things would be busy as the month drew on, so I finished with some more manga, and read all of Wandering Son by Shimura Takako! It's aged surprisingly well, though I was holding out for a T4T happily ever after 💔
The same image as upthread, with the covers of Wandering Son volumes 1 to 14 in the remaining date slots. On the 31st, two images have been diagonally bisected to fit volume 13 and 14 in the same slot.

For Day 17 of #DecemberTransReadathon I read @razorfemme.bsky.social’s Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars, and I am now very excited to experience more of her work! What a gorgeous command over language, and what a unique read. I would love more recommendations in this vein, should anyone have any.
The same calendar as upthread, with the cover of Kai Chen’s Thom’s ‘Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars,’ in the slot for December 17th.

It’s Day 16 of #DecemberTransReadathon! I’m amazed to have made it over halfway. I’m a bit under the weather, so I have returned to graphic novels for today and read @leeknoxostertag.bsky.social’s The Witch Boy! I really enjoyed the character designs and how the magic was visually represented ✨

For Day 15 of #DecemberTransReadathon I tore through Several People Are Typing by Calvin Kasulke, which I can now say with confidence will feel unsettling and uncanny to anyone who has ever worked at a culty, smallish company that uses Slack. It’s hard to concentrate with all the howling, indeed 🐺

On Day 14 of #DecemberTransReadathon, I finished Woodworking by Emily St. James! I loved how she played with grammatical person. I’ll admit there was a big reveal I saw coming… But it was well foreshadowed and the execution was interesting enough that I still got a lot of out it.
The same calendar as upthread, with Woodworking by Emily St. James in the spot for December 14th.

Been a few days since I finished anything, due to business & flitting between reads, but #DecemberTransReadathon continues! Day 13, I finished Little Blue Encyclopedia (for Vivian) by Hazel Jane Plante. I always appreciate a novel that gets experimental with form, and that final page… Lovely.
The same calendar as upthread, with the addition of the covers of Lote by Shola Von Reinhold in the December 10th slot, Woodworking by Emily St. James in the 11th and 12th slots, and Little Blue Encyclopaedia (for Vivian) by Hazel Jane Plante in the slot for the 13th.

I forgot to post for Day 9 of #DecemberTransReadathon, but I did read! More specifically, I read The Ajani's Sister by Alek L. Cristea, which has certainly whetted my appetitie for more magical, sword-wielding, middle-aged trans women, please and thank you! ⚔️

Somehow we've made it to the second week of #DecemberTransReadathon 😤 I wanted something shorter for today so I picked up a @johannestevans.bsky.social novella, Archival Management. I'll definitley try to get some more independent reads in before the month is out!

Lucky number 7! Today for #DecemberTransReadathon I read Claudine by Riyoko Ikeda. It's fascinating to see how influential Ikeda's style was on the shoujo landscape. The story did not go in the direction I was expecting! Whilst the ending was very of its time, I'm still delighted to have read it.

For Days 5 & 6 of #DecemberTransReadathon I read The Hidden Case of Ewan Forbes by Zöey Playdon, which was fascinating. I kept having to remind myself Forbes’ unbelievable story was all true. Playdon tied it beautifully into the present state of trans rights. Copies to gift are on their way.

I've been posting to #Medium recently! Earlier this week I shared a piece about innocence and (im)mortality in children's animation. If you'd like to check it out, you can find it at medium.com/@sorrenbriarwood #TheLastUnicorn #StevenUniverse #TheOwlHouse #BeeAndPuppycat
A blue graphic with gold text titled: "“I Can Feel This Body Dying All Around Me!” Innocence and Immortality in Children’s Animation." Central to the graphic is a screencap from the 1982 animated film 'The Last Unicorn,' featuring a white-haired woman with purple eyes standing before a tapestry depicting a bearded unicorn with a flowing mane. Text below reads: "From first days at school to first kisses, children's media often incorporates the many milestones that line the path winding towards adulthood. “First reckoning with the inevitably of death,” is a looming obelisk that many storytellers, understandably, choose to neatly sidestep... Read for free on Medium ✦ Link in bio." The graphic is decorated with golde objects, including a sculpted wing, two nine-pointed stars, a set of sewing scissors, a key, and a rose.

For Day 4 of #DecemberTransReadathon I read My Journey to Her/Boku ga Watashi ni Naru Tame ni! This was a surprisingly funny read but might be tricky if you're especially squeamish- I know I was wincing through a lot of it. Still, it was very informative and quite touching at moments!

Day 3 of #DecemberTransReadathon! I read volume two of Until I Love Myself (Jibun no Karada wo Yursu made) by Poppy Persuyama today. This duology was surprisingly heavy but so worth reading. Pesuyama's artstyle is simply fantastic too- so idiosyncratic and lively.
An updated version of the calendar from upthread, with the cover of Volume 2 of Poppy Pesuyama's "Until I Love Myself" in the slot for Wednesday 3rd December.

I had the privilege of contributing a poem to @rtie.org's Supreme Injustice zine. I wrote a sonnet inspired by the indelible beauty of my transfeminine sisters/siblings, because god, do they deserve a love poem. Please check the zine out (for free!) here: rtie.org/2025/11/29/supreme-injustice/
A blue graphic titled "Canute's Folly: A sonnet for my transfeminine sisters." In the centre is an image with the text "Resisting Transphobia in Edinburgh: Supreme Injustice! I can’t resist an excuse to read trans books, so with zero plan I’m joining in with #DecemberTransReadathon 🏳️‍⚧️ (I made my own graphic as I prefer portrait, link in the replies if anyone else would like to use it.) My first read was Vol 1 of Planet of the Wheat/Mugi no Wakusei by Torino Shino 🥖🛸🌾
A calendar in the colours of the trans flag, titled “tfr. 2025 December Trans Readathon.” The first slot is filled with the cover of Volume 1 of the manga The Planet of the Wheat. A text box in the bottom right corner reads: “Add a picture of your current read to each day on the calendar! If a book takes multiple days, add it more than once. Reading everyday matters more than finishing books!”
