In a pub quiz: "What's the building with the most stories?" "I don't know. I guess maybe the British library?" Storeys. She meant storeys.

Academia is brutal and amazing in equal measure because of the dozens of long distance friendships it creates. I just spent the most beautiful weekend in Newcastle celebrating the wedding of a very dear friend who I met when she was working on a year contract in Swansea.

I have been talking about efficiency at work lately. What does it mean? What's the motivation behind? Who benefits from it? Does it make our lives more productive? Unless it's your own time you save and you can then choose how to spend it then you need to think carefully if you want to be efficient

One look at some of the work exhibited at the Festival of Quilts is enough to appreciate the incredible things the human mind is capable of in the state of hyper focus.

Overheard at the lunch queue between two men who looked their mid twenties. "Books now are all slop. The books that I read are all 60 years old and everyone is like 'that's a good book' If you lookat Waterstones is all like feminist literature and shit." I do really want to know what he reads...

Went through the Greek educational system which means I studied the Odyssey in school. It's weird because 1) people are just discovering the story now and 2) you know how in school you ask "when is this ever going to be useful or relevant to my life"? Turns out it takes about 25 years. But it does.

There is a special irony in that, while waiting on the train platform to travel for my first day at my new job I passed by the VC of my previous job, whose decisions made me to ultimately give up. Is this a good or a bad omen?

I feel I owe an apology to my high school statistics teacher, for constantly complaining that I don't need to learn probabilities because "I am going to be a dietitian" Not only have I been teaching it for the best part of the past decade, I am about to start my new career as a data analyst 😁

A bit ironic that the 2024 infant feeding survey is released 4 days after I left academia but glad to see in published! www.gov.uk/government/s... For decades we were citing that "only 1% of UK mothers exclusively breastfeed at 6 months". This figure is now 26% which is a massive increase!

Grief is a beast. You think you are coping and then it hits you like a tonne of bricks. A notification popped up that I had a voicemail and thought: The only person who leaves me voice messages is my grandma. Occasionally, and just to say hi. And then it hit me why it cannot possibly be her...

Afternoon coffee catching the light just right

St David's has become one of my favourite days of the year. I get to mix cultural symbols of Greece and Wales and for me it is the beginning of spring!
Wooden desk set up for a printmaking project, featuring yellow daffodils in a glass jar, pencil sketches of daffodils on tracing paper, a carved linoleum block with a daffodil design, carving tools, pencil, scraps of shavings, a cup of tea, and a Welsh cake on a white plate.Bouquet of bright yellow daffodils tied with red-and-white string, a traditional martis bracelet that has a blue eye bead to protect from the evil eye, held up against a plain wall in strong sunlight, casting distinct shadows.

I have been reflecting on learning and assessing the learning as educators lately. I ask my students to make a podcast to help them develop comms skills beyond academic language. What I get is read out academic essays. I think students are taught they should not have fun with their academics.

Over Christmas I had to sit through conversations about how "carnivore is the best diet" and how what I've spent 20 years on is just "my opinion." Now the new US dietary guidelines are out, shaped more by lobbying than evidence, from an administration that doesn't believe in public health anyway.

My ceramic pumpkin is giving more Cinderella than Halloween and I am ok with that.

I came back home to a shattered inner pane of my window. The internet says metal enclosure/manufacturing fault and I have already contacted my landlady who is sorting a replacement out but I can still hear more cracking happening and I am kind of terrified it will collapse into a heap 😬

The vast majority of children will already get more than enough protein as part of their usual diet.
