Firehose Connectivity Degraded 2026-09-29 - RESOLVED

A graph of the uptime of the sonasky label bots (they're actually the same bot but that's not that important). Orange means warning and red means latency between cursor position and current timestamp is >= 900,000 ms (or 15 minutes). The chart shows a brief period where the bot fell behind real time, leading to a maximum total lag of about 40 minutes. The latest status ping shows a green bar back to a healthy amount of lag (exact amount not pictured, green means less than 15 minutes; in reality, its between 1-3 seconds)

- Add the ability to upload a ref sheet image directly, for characters that don't have an existing Bluesky post to reference. Look for the "Upload an Image" option next to Ref Sheet / Alt Ref on the character editor.

Add the ability to report an uploaded ref sheet image, right from the character view page, to Bluesky Moderation Services (must be signed in).
- You may be asked to sign out and back in once to grant the new upload/report permissions.
- Character descriptions now support markdown links. Links to sites other than Bluesky/SonaSky show a leaving-site warning before you navigate.

Time for a new feature... SonaSky Feeds! I'm excited to share that that I've got feeds created to show posts from all SonaSky labeled accounts *and* feeds per species label, both in reverse-chronological order and in a "popular" sorted feed that updates every ~15 minutes.

[RESOLVED] Network Routing Issue - 2026-08-06 Summary tl;dr - the way outbound traffic for SonaSky is routed failed due to an upstream/provider issue. The issue is now resolved. At time of posting, bot lag is about 2 hours. This should auto-resolve shortly.

Summary

At around 2026-08-06T10:27:14Z, SonaSky became unavailable due to a network routing issue. Outbound traffic from SonaSky nodes was effectively blocked, leading to an outage.

At around 2026-08-06T12:00:00Z, Astra woke up and began diagnosing the issue, and at around 2026-08-06T12:20:00Z, the policy with an issue was identified. A new policy was created to create an alternate outbound route for SonaSky traffic. Service was fully restored by 2026-08-06T12:29:00Z.

Note: this was not due to a firewall policy change - this was an issue with an upstream provider through which SonaSky outbound traffic is routed.

Well, here we are. 24+ hours later from the initial start of the problem, I'm still pretty exhausted, BUT... the most important data recovery is complete. Enough to keep the labeler running on a new node.

What's been done:

Recovery for signing key and database for the labeler
New gitops-controlled infrastructure on new hardware with a drive that isn't exploding, with automated daily backups, to make this kind of thing easier to recover from in the future should it (hopefully NOT) ever happen again.
SonaSky Ref data (because it lives in your Bluesky repo, not on my server) is still intact! so you're good there! But in the spirit of making this easier to manage (for me), I've also moved SonaSky ref deployments to be part of the same gitops process mentioned above. What does this mean for you? Basically nothing. It just means making sure it's online and available to use is easier for me.

What's still left to do:

I'm not out of the water yet. This isn't really how I'd hoped I'd be spending my Friday/weekend...

I'd like to rewrite the label browsing web app (for finding a species label). The old one wasn't the most efficient and I think I can do better with that. For now, this service remains offline. As a workaround, if you're looking for a label, try searching on bluesky.
I'd like to test some efficiency improvements to the bots handling applying/removing labels. For now, these services remain offline.

I greatly appreciate your patience as I've worked through this issue. This has been an unexpectedly stressful 24+ hours. I ask for your continued patience over the coming days (and week) as I continue to chip away at getting everything running close to the way it had been. (5/12) Feature: "When is it ok to draw" checkbox clarity Improved the labeling and layout of the "when is it OK to draw" SFW/NSFW by making a matrix of checkboxes. These are better rendered on the character page as well.

Just went through a TON more requests. I cannot get to all the remaining ones today, and I know more are going to come in, but I hope I was able to get to your request!

Summary of current status of sonasky request form reviews. Notably, 71% of requests at the time of taking the screenshot were approved and added to the labeler. 14.5% were rejected. 1.7% were "Evaluating", meaning further thought is required, and 12.8% are still new/unreviewed. This translates to 172 new labels approved and deployed, 35 rejections due to reasons listed in the screenshot, 4 still evaluating, and 33 new. This is a snapshot of the status at 8:30 PM ET on Nov 11, 2024. The rejection reasons and counts were:

While it was a nice feature, I've disabled the bot's ability to update the labeler's display name and bio with latest cursor position and delay estimates. This consumed extra API calls and may have contributed to getting rate limited faster. For the status/position of the bot, go to sonasky.app

Current delay for the bot can always be found on sonasky-browse.bunnys.ky :) In part due to the # of new users, the bot has gotten rate limited a few times. I'm also working on some updates to the bot to hopefully reduce how often that happens, if I can, or at least how fast it is to recover after.

Results after 2 weeks - reverting to English only won. Once the rate limit is lifted, I'll look to deploy that change. Localizations will still be stored in this repo, but the repo will not actively push pt-BR up to the labeler github.com/astrabun/son...
