United Farm Workers grew to become the largest farmworker union in the U.S., improving work conditions, including rest breaks and bathrooms, testing for pesticide exposure, a farmworker credit union, and abolishing the short-handled hoe, which caused injuries to many farm workers.

#OTD in 1962, the founding convention of the National Farm Workers Association, was held in Fresno, CA with over 150 delegates in attendance. In 1966, the group became the United Farm Workers of America when it merged with the Filipino Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, led by Larry Itliong.

#OTD in 2011, "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" (DADT), a U.S. military policy that prohibited openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual individuals from serving, was repealed approximately nine months after President Barack Obama signed the Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010 on December 22, 2010.

Labor rights activist Ernesto Galarza conducted an investigation into the disaster, exposing the unsafe transportation practices & systemic neglect that placed farmworkers' lives at risk. His report became a powerful indictment of the Bracero Program & helped build support for its end in 1964.

Twenty-two men died instantly, and another 27 were seriously injured in one of the deadliest transportation disasters involving farmworkers in U.S. history.

#OTD in 1963, 32 Mexican farmworkers were killed when a Southern Pacific freight train collided with the makeshift bus transporting them to work near Chualar, California. Most of the men were braceros—participants in the Bracero Program who lived together in a nearby labor camp.

El Congreso was inspired by articles in Laredo’s Spanish language newspaper La Crónica, run by the Idár family, who brought attention to inequalities faced by Mexican Americans.

In 1917, she moved to San Antonio, where she opened an escuelita to educate young Mexican American children and later became a translator at the county hospital. In 2023, she became the second Latina and first Tejana featured on a US coin.

In 1911, she helped organize the First Mexicanist Congress to empower Mexican people to fight injustice and founded and led La Liga Feminil Mexicanista in Laredo. During the Mexican Revolution, she joined the Cruz Blanca, crossing the border to nurse the wounded.

Born #OTD in 1885, Jovita Idár was a journalist, activist, educator, & suffragist who reported for La Crónica & El Progreso newspapers in Laredo, TX. She believed in the press’ ability to keep the powerful accountable & frequently wrote about discrimination, women's rights, & the Mexican Revolution.
