I can only imagine it was this. hard to get funding for any animation projects these days, so I can imagine getting desperate.

A screenshot from The Simpsons where Krusty the Clown says:
They drove a dump truck full of money to my house.
I'm not made of stone.

I didn't know who he was so I had to look it up, and...

The preview for Jorge R. Gutierrez's Wikipedia article. It describes him as "a Mexican animator, writer, sellout (highlighted), producer, director, and voice actor".

"appropriate for kids but not necessarily *for* kids is kind of an interesting fuzzy space and it depends on the kids and your parenting priorities, I suppose! The Legend of Brightblade and The Tea Dragon Society are more "for kids" but I think they're lovely too.

The cover of The Legend of Brightblade, by Ethan M. Aldridge. Three bards summon a dragon with their music.

The Tea Dragon Society, by Kay O'Neill. Two girls with different kinds of horns have a picnic with a small cute dragon.

I really like the Flight anthology series—lots of short comics by lots of different artists, with a variety of tones and subjects, all very loosely joined the the fanciful notion of flying.

The cover of Flight volume 1. A person rides a giant bird through a steampunk city

Evan Dahm's Vattu is an incredible work about colonialism and empire and what it's like to be assimilated by those forces

I've been reading Tom Siddell's Gunnerkrigg Court for... jeez, 18 years now? Is that possible? It's still going, but it's a coming-of-age story in a boarding school with tenuous relations with the magic forest across the river.

The cover of Gunnerkrigg Court. Schoolgirls, a stuffed animal, and a robot stand on spooky stairs

Lucy Knisley's Relish, an autobiographical comic about food and family. I was so happy when I figured out a comic that my mother in law would like

Someone else mentioned Nimona and I second it—a great queer fantasy. the animated adaptation is great too

The book cover for Nimona, featuring a fancy blond, a shady-looking man in armor, and the punk-looking Nimona with dragon wings

I think about this all the time (from catandgirl.com/the-genius/)

A comic panel from Cat and Girl.
Cat: I've eliminated the friction!
Girl: The friction is the meaning
Cat: I got rid of the inefficiencies
Girl: The inefficiency is humanity

I kind of had the same thing going on and of all things this helped me let go of needing to *understand* so I could just... appreciate that people need to be themselves.

Screencaps of Princess Bubblegum from Adventure time.
First panel: Bubblegum shrugs, says "People get built different."
Second panel: "We don't need to figure it out. We just need to respect it."

You know, I don't think that's really the case until Sonic 3! The first two games have a lot more "find your moment to strike" bosses, or odd gimmicks like the seesaws in Star Light Zone.

I've been informed of Lady Butterfly from Sekiro:
