The way the game forces you to use mechanics in out-of-the box ways really clicks with me. The game is a massive love letter to the DK arcade cabinets, even featuring DK Junior as a main villian 010

There are plenty of unique mechanics to this game too, like the ability to throw and catch your hammer, or collect powerups that let you place hammers and bridges in the level for a brief period of time. 110

Mario can perform a side-flip, which works very similar to the same move in Super Mario 64, which came out two years later. He can also do a handstand, which can not only be used to block barrels, but with three timed jumps, you get a super-jump, also like in M64! 120
SomieStuff @somiestuff.bsky.social · 21/10/2024The game's moveset was actually extremely important to the Mario franchise. First off, changes to the original DK arcade game's mechanics were made. You can turn mid jump, but it's a little stiff on purpose. When you fall from a certain height, instead of dying, you either roll, get stunned or die. 110

SomieStuff @somiestuff.bsky.social · 21/10/2024The rest stages themselves take a different, but natural direction. Most stages will have you take a key to a door. Every 4th stage is a boss where you have to face Donkey Kong himself in a classic arcade stage, and at the end of each world there's a boss where you have to throw barrels at DK. 110

Once you reach the end of the four arcade stages, Donkey Kong simply... gets back up, and you have 96 more stages to play, in nine different new worlds (I lied it's not 1/2) 110

I think it's super underappreciated for what it did for the Mario franchise and gaming as a whole. Also here's an old clip of me pulling off the TAS strat for this stage (1/2) 130
