Protecting the Amazon matters to the whole world. But as we quite rightly feel dismayed by the possible election of new Bolsonaro, we should redouble our efforts to allow the return of our own rainforests and wetlands and other wild habitats. www.somersetwildlands.org

Always winners and losers in rewilding (or conservation). Looking at some provisional results for a couple of sites to see who is up and who is down. Will release data when we can. So far though on this location its skylarks, yellow wagtails and Cetti's warblers up, sedge warblers and rooks down.

Timely reminder that wildcats were once found in and around the Somerset Levels and we can imagine them swimming from spot to spot…

We’re excited to let you know about our latest little bit of land for nature - Cox Mead. It’s a wonderful extension to an existing site - and one with opens all kinds of riverside opportunities! Thank you to our supporters who made this possible. www.somersetwildlands.org/news/introdu...

New land - Cox Mead — Somerset Wildlands
We’ve acquired some more land for nature. Our new extension to our Clark Fields site presents some exciting opportunities to help rewet and rewiggle the Old Rhyne that flows through it.

☀️ The hot, dry summer is having major impacts on people, nature & water resources. 🚜 Farmers harvesting crops early 🔥 Wildfire and algal bloom risks increasing 💧 Millions of people facing restrictions on water use 📉 Low river flows in many rivers UK Water Resources Portal: ukwrp.ceh.ac.uk

Athelney looking magical at the moment. This is its fourth summer of rewilding and the flowers, inverts and birds are bursting out. From standard sheep pasture to this in just a few years.

Even though we’ve had no rain and very high temps for over a month our memorial trees seem to be doing surprisingly well- although how long that lasts we can’t say. Grass still green-ish in spite of everything…

Absolutely thousands of wasp spiders in one of our new rewilding sites. In one field every other spider seems to be one.

We’re sure it goes without saying, but don’t light fires or drop cigarettes or leave litter in the countryside. The climate may prepare the fire but it’s usually a person who lights it.

Reposting this image from a heatwave in 2022, showing the boundary between one of our small rewilding sites - green - and a neighbouring field. It's like a rather brutal flag for the anthropocene, but it does illustrate how creating space for nature can make the land more resilient.

It’s possible that the next few days may see the warmest ever recorded in the Somerset Levels, and possibly the warmest days since they were were formed! Rewilding is crucial to climate change - helping store carbon but also giving wildlife and ecosystems space to adapt as the climate does.

These surveys are very encouraging. It’s great to see a small, dedicated rewilding charity like Somerset Wildlands improving species diversity in an intensely farmed region like the Somerset levels. This is a small charity, so every single member and donor is significant. Please help if you can.

Dead wood! And dying wood. And dead tree stumps that have been loved with a digger and are now spiriting new shoots. Marsh harriers, deer, yellow wagtails, diverse warblers and more down on the Levels sites today. Still too early for most of the flowers and insects but they are coming.

According to Google Earth the emergent scrub has formed a perfect number "2" on one of our rewilding sites, which we can only take as a sign that nature itself is going to spell out a message (or an equation). More details as we get them. www.somersetwildlands.org
