From Saturday morning through Monday night, more than 110 similar complaints about commanders in every branch of the military had been logged by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF). Jonathan Ross was not a rookie. He was not untrained. He was not unfamiliar with force. He had years in federal law enforcement, he had military experience in tactical units, and a professional history that positioned him as someone trusted to operate in high-stress situations. This matters because it dismantles the supposedly comforting myth that violence like this occurs only when someone panics or is not sufficiently trained.

Training did not prevent this.

Experience did not prevent this.

They led to it.

This is not a failure of preparation but a failure of culture, system and soul.

Law enforcement culture — particularly federal enforcement — is built around absolute authority, command, and control. These are inherently evil concepts, though they are not uniquely American. But when authority is combined with a worldview that sorts people into threats and non-threats, compliants and resistors, obeyers and dissidents, it becomes dangerously easy for certain categories of people to slip into the mental space of “acceptable losses.”

Women, especially women who do not perform deference correctly, live perilously close to that boundary.
