Beware this AI slop garbage by “Raph Francis,” one of MANY books “written” by the same “author” in a very short time, covering everything from mantises to grouse to leopard seals (each in their on books). Infuriating to see content I’ve dedicated a career to show up in AI trash 😡😡😡

Spotted Gars in Michigan are where it’s at! Getting back after these fish for the first time in 16 years (since my PhD research on the species)! Their patterns really pop in Michigan’s clear-water inland lakes! Fish will be used in age/growth/climate adaptation research @garlab.bsky.social!

Fish scientist here, I agree with others that you saw a needlefish, member of the family Belonidae. They superficially look like the freshwater gars, but much slimmer and translucent as you described. Cool fish!

Believe it or not we have addressed this! Here you go: single gar = gar multiple gars, same species = garrison multiple gars, different species = garmada
Graphic showing the different terminology for a single gar, a group of gar of the same species, and group of gar of multiple species. They are called the following, respectively: gar, garrison, garmada.

Used this image in a paleontology conference talk, but it’s honestly how I feel/what I recall every time I’m next to one of these living fossils. Sam Neil’s portrayal of that childhood fascination, I have no words 🥹

All species of gars have long snouts relative to most fish. Even the “shortnose” gar has a long snout, but the Longnose Gar has a significantly longer and narrower snout compared to other gar species. Here’s a comparison with a Shortnose Gar (photo 1) and also a gar scientist (photo 2) 😅

Can confirm freshwater folks do return in one piece after marine research trip with @whysharksmatter.bsky.social. Also note David was willing to “vandalize” his team’s own research vessel for anti-gar propaganda 😅😅😅
Two scientists, one freshwater and one marine, sit on a marine science vessel named “Garvin”. To spite the freshwater scientist, who studies gar, the marine scientist has crossed out the “gar” in Garvin with tape. Don’t worry, the two scientists are long-time friends. Scientists collect data on a large nurse shark prior to release back into water.

Indeed, gar are good to eat! Popular food fish in many parts of Mexico and Central America. They have boneless “back strap” white meat; good in stew, smoked, curry, fried, grilled, empanadas, tamales (I’ve tried all these) 🐟🍽️👍

Do NOT listen to Big Shark & @whysharksmatter.bsky.social propaganda🦈 INSTEAD, fill the Reflecting Pool with GARS; they breathe air, live in fresh or saltwater, have armored scales, and poisonous eggs. They’ll keep costs down and Kid Rock out. I have an unbiased, no-bid recommendation for this job.
