I love it when I’m underwhelmed with a book but too far in to stop and then it just ends unexpectedly because half of it is footnotes.

Issue #900 on Prose! Was definitely not expecting to work on this thing as much as I did, but it's been a blast. I've got some nice features in the hopper! 1. Syncing commenting across desktop, web, and *local* HTML 2. Publish to AtProto (soon!) 3. Full web exp with an (optional) at-cost paid tier

One on the board for #agentic codebase rewrites: shopify.engineering/back-to-native I’m convinced we’re about to see a wave of total codebase rewrites to make them AI-native or AI-first.
shopify.engineering
Native is now the future of mobile at Shopify (2026) - Shopify
Coding agents changed what it costs to build mobile apps twice. Here’s why Shopify is moving from React Native back to Swift and Kotlin.

Cue the "we need to regulate open-weight" pearl clutching. "the costs of some advanced AI tasks such as coding fell by as much as 56% while the quality of the AI’s performance fell just 2%, Austin said." archive.is/2026.08.21-0...
Austin said he’s found that open source models are “just as good or better” than older models sold by the likes of Anthropic and OpenAI. For instance, AT&T’s software developers still rely on cutting-edge models for complex tasks like generating code, but can use cheaper open source models for less intense tasks like generating summaries of previously submitted code, he said. “We expect that to just keep getting better going forward.”

AT&T also has gotten savings from using so-called model routers that automatically route employees’ queries to cheaper models based on the complexity of the task. After the company began using router provider LiteLLM, the costs of some advanced AI tasks such as coding fell by as much as 56% while the quality of the AI’s performance fell just 2%, Austin said.

Such a quotable book. #solarpunk #walkaway
"“Look, there are as many walkaway philosophies as there are walkaways, but mine is, ‘the stories you tell come true.’ If you believe everyone is untrustworthy, you’ll build that into your systems so that even the best people have to act like the worst people to get anything done. If you assume people are okay, you live a much happier life.”" (Cory Doctorow, Walkaway)

And I’m pretty sure they just think we’re weird big dogs too. Must be weird, is all. Cats, on the other hand, I suspect, don’t give a shit.

Angel @solo.ist · 13/08/2026
But we’re all mammals (dogs and us) so, we’ve got some stuff in common like playing and whatnot, but also you have all these dog instincts that just make no sense in the human world, and instead we’re like “here chew this fake lamb chop toy instead.”

Angel @solo.ist · 13/08/2026
Sometimes, I like to think about how weird it must be, to be a pet dog. You have zero context or understanding of why things are the way they are, it’s like being abducted by aliens as a baby human and raised on some strange world that just makes no sense to your brain.

Another banger from Rick Rubin’s The Creative Act, re: what gets in the way of creation: “Thoughts and habits not conducive to the work: Believing you’re not good enough. Feeling you don’t have the energy it takes. Mistaking adopted rules for absolute truths. Not wanting to do the work (laziness).”

The seemingly disconnected threads between sustainable local farming and decentralized tech are hand-in-glove: technology that connects people locally with meeting their most important needs, and that includes sustainably sourced food. Open and decentralized tech can help empower regenerative farms!
