Hierarchy is not the source of rules, but is actually opposed to them. If you turn the music all the way up does the world outside your headphones still exist? Tiny Mastodon by @liamleroux42.bsky.social

Sure, why not? After they don't build it, they can power it with the giant wind fields they aren't building either, since they obviously aren't building the "green hydrogen" plant those were supposed to be for. How much longer are we going to tolerate these blatant scammers?

Oh, I know the problems are on them. I had the simplest taxes in the world, one source of income entirely in Canada and nothing actually owing in the US, and the IRS still made it way slower and more complicated than it needed to be. Filing as a business or self-employed must be a nightmare.

Before finally renouncing my US citizenship, I always filed my Canadian taxes first and then had an accountant do my US return based on my Canadian one (I did successfully file my own US return once, but it took forever and the next year everything was different). A pain either way though, for sure.

@edzitron

what is your relationship to the rationalists and effective altruists?

Jacob Coxon
@hilbertspaess

Yeah, this is a really important question.

I've been associating with rationalists for almost a decade. Their ideas were compelling and you can’t deny their foresight. The founders of every superintelligence effort are all bound up in the rationality sphere. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman used to frequent the MIRI offices.

The way | relate to rationalists is it’s like the bizarre hypertrophied physiques on specialized athletes. In my opinion they have weirdly specialized minds that make them uniquely able to be correct about topics removed from daily experience. These “specialized minds” also can make them off-putting to many people.

I dont know if I'd consider myself a rationalist. I am intuitively opposed to polyamory, veganism, and consequentialist intuitions. But I certainly trust them to be correct about factual questions.

Shots from the weekend. Both 500mm, hand-held, all manual. One from a kayak, the other with a macro helicoid. I'm so tired.

This thread shows just how wrong-headed the Houston and Carney governments' approach to methane gas ("natural gas" and "liquified natural gas" [LNG]) is. It's not just bad for the environment. It's additionally bad for the economy. Dumb.

The best thing about this movie is Alejandro Jodorowski's reaction to seeing it. It was so terrible it made him feel better about his own failed adaptation, because if David Lynch couldn't do any better than this mess, surely his version would have been a disaster too.

People need to distinguish "usable" from "useful". The tip of a knife is usable to loosen screws, but it isn't really useful for that, because actual screwdrivers exist that work better. Assume anyone who says they need a switchblade for home repairs is definitely planning to stab you in the back.

Why have I gone from never getting emergency alerts to getting woken up by them multiple times in the middle of the night? It feels like the RCMP got yelled at for not using the system, and decided to start but make it as annoying as possible instead out of spite.
