It's awesome, and I wish there was more cities that did stuff like this.

As for why, the simple answer is they required more maintenance than other buses, and since we were already under-funding all bus maintenance, they quickly became the least reliable in the fleet by far. Council and OC have decided they aren't worth the (self-induced) headache.

There are currently no electric double-decker buses available for purchase. In addition, as sad as I am, OC is retiring all DD's. There are currently only 10 left, and once they're retired, we won't be buying any more.

OC Transpo weekend service is about to be decimated starting this Sunday in the upcoming summer schedule. Check out our new tool at bettertransitottawa.ca to see the extent of the cuts and if a trip you rely on will be affected. (1/2)

Hopefully the DND people move on the people-mover (pun intended) sooner rather than later. The Beachburg Rail line is an incredibly exciting project, and I really do hope it succeeds.

Forgive me, but when a plan to plant 4800 trees turns into 24, it's not unreasonable to have a lot of cynicism that anything will ever be done about it.

This assumes that they don't see this as the intended goal. Luckily, many who would accept would likely be someone who doesn't hold that opinion...but the problem is as you mentioned - not many would accept.

You are not an ally. Do not ever give yourself the credit of being one. You have, at every possible turn, set to sabotage this project at every turn, and your voting history and motions reflect that. The only reason this exists at all is because support is overwhelming *in spite* of your efforts.

After 30+ people showed up to the Public Works commission last week in support of expanding bus lanes on Bank Street, City Council has now passed a motion to reduce the scope of the bus lanes even further This motion was passed with absolutely no debate Passed without a single question

An amazing member of ours put together this graphic that really encapsulates perfectly the situation on Bank Street. There is only so much space available, and we must use it as efficiently as possible. Parking isn't that. Please sign up to delegate on March 30th in favour of bus lanes!
An OC Transpo #6 bus in a bus lane. Inside of the bus there are multiple people, each with a text showing what they're going to be doing. They say "Grabbing a bite to eat", "Going to Lansdowne", "Getting a haircut", "Bought groceries", and "Can finally fit on the bus". The final one was a user in a wheelchair.

Beside the bus there is a single person in a truck in the regular travel lane. Pointing to him it says "Just driving through". They have a thought bubble coming out from their head saying "That bus lane is going to ruin local business!".

Fantastic photo, but as far as I can tell, this has been colourized incorrectly, as the Canadian was never painted this way. Noticed the Google Gemini logo as well, so that explains that, I suppose. Under CP operations, this is what The Canadian actually looked like:
An image of the continental train service known as The Canadian, going around a slight curve, dated 1978, under Canadian Pacific (CP) oversight, being pulled by a GMD-built FP9A number 1406.

The stainless steel train cars have a red stripe along the entire consist, starting just above the windows and ending just below the curved train car roof.

This image was used to contrast the originally posted image, which used AI image processing to colourize it, and mistakenly painted the entire train car red with a white maple leaf on the trailing observation car.

Latest plan actually makes pedestrianization worse. The current seasonal parking closures for Market Square & William are being removed for "Majour events only", all of the other plans and promises have been walked back. The renders have a gutted market building and no other changes.

So, if this is correct, that's 50% more people than previously expected. Considering we previously thought transit could cope with nothing done until 2046, line 2 already at capacity some days, and greater RTO mandates looming, we kinda need to get started on upgrades like NOW, no?

Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
Now you're talking about a completely different alignment and different priorities.

Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
If we are talking about using a different station location altogether, that's one thing. If we are talking about serving downtown @ GC, going around the mountain is fundamentally incompatible with a high-speed service. Further, I'd strongly wager all existing cost estimates factored in a mtl tunnel.

Building a project designed to last centuries and not thinking about what you need to grow would be a crown failure of planning and engineering. It's okay to be cynical, especially in Canada, but let's try not to let our cynicism advocate for vast incompetency and failure.

Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
The ~1.4km came from the length of the stub in Ottawa vs the stub length in Montreal. Nothing to do with a tunnel. But Montreal needs a tunnel. We cannot be afraid to spend good money for good service. The question is, how long should it be? Not sure where you're getting this $200B number from...

Whether it's "worth it" or not is for us to speculate on, and Alto to decide. They'll have all the specific numbers and details we can only hope for, so if it works, it works. In agreement about overall timing, though, yeah, and 10 minutes is pushing it (only around 6 minutes extra, from my calcs).
010
Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
All good! Much to my frustration, it's not exactly centre-forward. Completely reasonable to miss and it makes sourcing stuff a pain.
010
Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
There simply isn't room for surface running, but the entire thing would be cut & cover, yeah. Absolutely zero reason why you wouldn't. You can even have a concourse in between the road and the LRT tunnel, and there's enough room for various station layouts.
010
Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
It'd be a ~1.4km compared to Montreals 10-13km. With electric trains, proper ops, modern signalling, and a dedicated corridor, it would have negligible impacts. Final cost estimates will be down to Alto, and it's important to keep in mind Tremblay will also cost lots of money and compromises.

Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
It will be a terminus for many years until Toronto connects in, and the entire network is done. After which point, it will add a few minutes for non-express trains with significant benefits for the overall project, the city, and the country.

I do. TramGO is set to terminate it's initial construction in the Elgin triangle. The NCC, however, has planned for the eventuality that the transit loop is an inevitability, and only a matter of when. Here are some snippets from the confed blvd update and Alexandra bridge redesign.
A brief note from the NCC detailing that the current tram render do not include the entire transit loop concept.A detailed diagram detailing the preparations made for Alexandra bridge to eventually be converted into a tram.

Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
Alexandra is being built for the tram to eventually run on it in addition to portage to complete the tram loop.

It makes complete sense for their planning goals, and I listed a number of specific reasons for doing this, but you can essentially boil it down to: better access, higher ridership, and sustainable growth. Yes, it would be a stub-end. No, this would not be an issue.
020
Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
It's a downtown station surrounded by destinations, connected to a central LRT stop, a future tramway on its doorstep, walking and cycling networks, and 2 dozen bus routes. The station itself would be underground, as there is not enough space for the planned service levels with no room to expand.

Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
$60B, $90B, then $200B. These cost escalations are out of control...
020
Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 04/02/2026
It's not "possibly", it's definitely. And it does not have the space needed to run the planned 72 trains/day, let alone in the future, and even if you made that work for Alto alone, you leave absolutely zero room in your new central train station for any other services and no flexibilities.

Mad @solidstatedj.bsky.social · 03/02/2026
Surface is completely infeasible. Not only does it jeopardize the canal's heritage classification big time, but it has zero room for expansion and barely enough room to operate as is. Preliminary cost estimates for a C&C station and a viaduct are ~2B. Reasonable for a $60-90B national project.

The money has *never* been the issue. As much as we can blame the contractors, let's not pretend like this isn't the fault of council, past and present. Our bus fleet cannot cope with demand when the LRT is running properly, and we have been promised an axle fix for YEARS. This isn't right.

Fun fact, these tracks actually continue on and run through Carp (currently served by OC Transpo) and terminate at Arnprior (around 10k people as of 2021), for which the city owns the entire RoW, soo...please? maybe? maybe please?

Well, I for one was there on Canada day in 2025, which I can most definitely say had *much* more people than 2023 or 2024 (let alone bluesfest), and the trains handled the crowds like a champ, and I left during the peak rush. And now you've heard at least one report to the contrary.

Canadian healthcare is *very* flawed, but I don't think I can go as far as to call it bad. As an individual, what exactly is covered and how that interwines with insurance is easily the most frustrating. On a broader level, a poaching field as a southern neighbour is easily the worst aspect.
