Nathan Small: A human software engineer fresh out of college and newcomer to the City of Monsters. As a matter of survival, Nathan Small navigates social situations by making himself as uninteresting as possible. This strategy has recently been complicated by a fairy’s curse that turned all his boy clothes into girly-girl girl clothes for girls.

Listen: Don’t read into this too much. In fact, don’t read anything into Nathan Small at all. If this whole skirt situation is making his heart beat funny, maybe that simply means he has a garden-variety cardiac arrhythmia. Didn’t think of that, did you?

Anyway, he has to go interview for a spot in a rock band now, so please just be cool, alright?

Rinne Alexandria “Lexie” Kamitani: Guitarist and lead singer for Dodecadendron, a punky underground rock band. Make no mistake: Lexie Kamitani is Kind Of A Lot. Charismatic, laid-back, and easily amused, her cool exterior belies a remarkably intense individual with a profound passion for truth, love, and art. She exclusively fucks with people who Give A Shit.

Although born a werewolf, she spent her teenage years among humans, during which time she developed her extreme distaste for authority. Most monsters don’t fit neatly into the categories of “cis” or “trans”, but Lexie loudly self-describes as a trans woman.

An excerpt from CURSE/KISS/CUTE. The text reads:

“I lost a bet,” says Nathan to his assembled audience of crickets.

“I lost a *bet*,” he says again, but differently.

“I...*lost a bet*. Actually, the *truth* is, I...lost a bet. Well, see—basically—I lost a bet? *Lost* a bet. Lost a *bet*? Lost...a bet?”

He frowns.

“Oh, you lost a bet? So basically, what you’re saying is that you think wearing a skirt is sort of a, kind of a joke? You don’t get the job. In fact, I’m calling the police. *Idiot.*” He punts a stick twenty feet in the air.

He slides with his back against the wall. “All my clothes fell in a lake. Of fire? My clothes went to hell. So I had to borrow my...sister’s clothes?” He puts his palms together in prayer. “My sister, who has all my same measurements and doesn’t own a single pair of pants...and the bra straps? Um...the bra straps are...tactical?”

His ass touches down in the grass. He pleads to the moon above. “My name is Nathan Small. My name is...Natalie?” He shudders.

He thinks.

He tilts his head.

“Nathan? No, no, no. I said my name was *Nat*. Nat Small. It’s actually unisex.”

He nods, slowly.

The clouds of the moon loom overhead. He watches for a while as they silently storm.

“But the *truth* is,” he whispers, “even though I look like this...I’m actually a *boy*.”

A cricket jumps up his skirt. He shrieks.

Talita finishes packing the cart in the puddle of light by the apartment building's front entrance, then is startled by a movement to her left. Emerging from the darkness between the two buildings are four large shadows, with 7 eerie eyes flashing the artificial light back towards her. It's Verengt and 3 other centaurs, all barely visible silhouettes. One of them points their trunk to the matriarch and whispers something, causing them to take notice of Talita. Talita looks back at them, apprehensive. Her own pupils reflect the light too, the uneven angle causing one to glow, and the other to mostly remain dark. Verengt walks toward Talita out of the darkness, their body gaining detail as they slowly become illuminated by the door lights.

Verengt approaches Talita, who is hunched fearfully over the cart. Verengt: Talita. Good evening. Talita straightens up and nervously touches her neck. Verengt's trunk points up in a loose curl. Talita: H- hi Verengt! I need to apologize for earlier, I– Verengt: No, we should apologize. I believe we misinterpreted you. Do you speak human language with your face, as well as your trunk? They gesture with an open palm over their own face.

Talita: Oh! …Yes, I do! Verengt: Showing teeth means something very different to them, doesn't it? Talita: Humans pull their lips up and bare their teeth to show they're happy or friendly. She points at her face and pulls her lips back into a quick smile that mostly shows gums. Talita: I've lived with them so long that I do it habitually. Verengt: I see. I usually look for a trunk curl... They lift their trunk upwards in a relaxed curl. Verengt: Do humans not know what this means? Talita returns the curl, with a small closed-lip smile. Talita: No, they usually don’t. Verengt looks off thoughtfully. Verengt: They always seem so unfriendly to me, with their flat nose and teeth flashing as they speak. But I suppose that's just how they're built…

Oof best of luck with that, it’s so hard when communication about that sort of stuff is uncertain 😩 Nearly every afab person on my moms side has it to some degree, aunts, sisters, grandma, etc, but I have zero contact with anyone on my bio dad’s side so I got lucky that it came from my mom

I got diagnosed at 26 after my growth got big enough that it caused enough pain I was in the ER /w\ Apparently I’d had it for years, it just got too big without birth control helping it. I will say, birth control has gotten less affective over the years sadly, but it’s still wayyy more (1/2)

birth control has been a lifesaver! The nuvaring did wonders for me for like 3 years, made the growth smaller and stopped all periods which are way worse with endo. I got lucky w my diagnosis bc my entire moms side of the family has it so when my growth showed up that was the first thing (2/3)

Yeah I’m gonna do surgery in like 2 years. I’m waiting bc that’s when my family might wanna try for kids and it’s good to get it out before pregnancy, but not too in advance in case it comes back. If it does come back after surgery, I’ll just get the whole system removed. In the meantime tho (1/3)

I have an endometrioma growth that can press on my bladder, it occasionally shifts around and causes issues for weeks at a time. My obgyn and I keep an eye on it via yearly vaginal ultrasounds to make sure it doesn’t cause significant issues, that’s helped a lot to figure it out (kinda pricy tho)

Verengt: Ah, I often get asked, but the answer isn’t impressive… when I was a child, I got underfoot of our clan’s lngior matriarch while it was being corralled for bloodletting, and it stepped on my head. I’m very lucky I lived! There is a hole on this side, I have to put wax in it to speak without losing my breath.

Verengt: We had been delayed on our polar migration due to a sickness... it was one of my first litter, Putwer. Their condition deeply worried me. I heard that the aliens could be able to help, so we traveled to their outpost near the strait of the Shta sea. The aliens treated Putwer, and while they recovered, we talked to the other clans around the outpost, learned more of the human language and bug ferret signs, and watched the spaceships fly up and down. We are a small clan, not wealthy, I have lost several litters to disease and infirmity. With few workers it was difficult to keep our small herd of tep safe from bandits and wild jngti. But at the outpost my clan ate well everyday. The aliens kept no livestock, but instead had this miraculous printer... well, you would know. My eldest litter quickly became more interested in traveling up, than north. They wanted to work at the microgravity station where the aliens were recycling scrap for import to the homeplanet surface. I wasn't so certain about it, but I discussed it with my sireparent and agreed that it could be the best choice for my children's prosperity. It has been very interesting, working with bug ferrets and humans. I enjoy hearing about their strange lives and customs, and seeing how their machines work. But life on the station was very cramped— my children pounced hungrily on this job when it was offered. I'm happy to have more room, but from what I understand the food options here are much more limited. We'll see how long it takes for them to start bellyaching about that...

Chapter 10: The Runaway A broad overhead shot shows the entire junkyard, the plant and habitat module, and the massive berm wall surrounding the curved end of the launch loop. The ground around the work site has the echoes of its history as a mining site etched into the regolith as strangely concentric and organized craters. A closeup of the Runaway spacecraft on the jack shows it fully fixed with remote control vehicles milling around it. Text message exchange: Talita: You excited for launch tomorrow? Bip: Oh, absolutely. Bip: The night cycle’s all lined up to get me on the rails and into the hitch. Talita: Best of luck. I’ll be on standby if there’s a ground-based emergency. Bip: You working today? Talita: Yeah, same old. Bip: I’ll leave you to it.

Phoebe: Anyone else getting deja vu? Talita and her remaining temp team—Phoebe, Dominic, Yao, and Adam—huddle around the electrical box of the same radio tower that they were repairing not too long ago. The scissor lift is parked in the background, and none of the temps look very enthusiastic about the prospect of repeating the same tedious workday. Talita: Let's check the connectivity for the one that was faulty last time, first. If it's not that one, we'll start looking at units of the same manufacture to see if they're failing in the same way.

Talita: Let's get this done quick. Yao, position the lift under array 15. Yao goes off the move the scissor lift into position, Adam turns away from the open electrical box in bored disinterest. He looks back to the ladder he tried climbing the last time they had worked on this problem. Meanwhile, Talita prepares the electrical box with Dominic and Phoebe. She looks down at the ground for her tools. Talita: Good to go... Who had the multimeter? Behind her, Yao stands on the unextended scissor lift, pointing up at part of the ladder that's out of sight. Yao: Boss, Adam is—
