i'm sorry though, but i truly don't think most of those struggles are things women imposed on men. i think men set those standards and now some women have certainly bought into them -- like your friend's girlfriend. i think that's crazy of her, but it's also on your friend -- if your friendship is really over now, then he picked her nonsense over a true friendship. she's a controlling person and is jealous/possessive to a paranoid extent, but he gave into that. that's on him.

none of this has anything to do with fandom other than the fact that fandom sometimes makes real life issues feel more apparent.

i am in full agreement that girls and women generally have an easier time having affectionate, emotionally intimate relationships -- but i will say that TONS of bi/lesbian girls, closeted or otherwise, have experienced just the opposite. they get called a creep, a freak, a pervert, and suddenly they can't be trusted with anything at all, lest they be attracted to every girl ever and maybe assault them.

i think we have a problem in society in general with acting like attraction is some instant, overpowering urge that always beats out platonic love, certainly.

i strongly believe your grievances are valid. they are legitimate hindrances to men being close in real life. but fandom didn't do this, romantic shipping didn't do this lol, and demonizing people's fun with same-sex ships just ends up emboldening homophobes who are simply uncomfortable or angry seeing their favorite characters be queer.

but i'm also still stunned that you think there are so few close male friendships... i do think most of them are also romantically shipped, but that's not a problem imo lol, obviously.
