Just dropped: our Mexico oak diversification paper made the cover of @pnas.org! Beautiful photo of Quercus rugosa, netleaf oak, by friend & colleague M. Socorro González-Elizondo, to accompany PhD candidate Kieran Althaus's excellent, deeply collaborative study. Enjoy! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
Cover image: Pictured are netleaf oaks (Quercus rugosa) in a moist forest in Cerro Verde, Oaxaca, Mexico. Kieran N. Althaus et al. traced the history of white and red oaks in Mexican and Central American mountainous forests. Around 25 million years ago, white and red oaks independently spread into Mexico. Species diversification intensified as the trees moved into high-elevation terrain. According to the authors, the oaks’ movement into new habitats and their adaptability to new climates boosted the biodiversity of the mountainous forests.
