Wifey and I have been going to a lot of CHL hockey games and indie wrestling shows, and we’ve found a family of people up here that we love. We’re thriving. We miss the places and the people we had to leave, but we’re healing from that and have found many sources of joy up here.

Take all this fuckery into account and add the fact that there really aren’t that many ballparks in the PNW to roadtrip to (we have the Rainiers and the Northwest League and that’s just about it) and you have very dwindling interest in posting about baseball anymore.

MiLB used to be somewhat immune from this, and you could find a quiet spot to simply exist where you don’t feel forced to spend money, but even those spots are dwindling. There’s only so many cobranded gameday elements you can take before your attention is diverted to products instead of the game.

Just like corporations tried to take a viral moment of genuine fun and togetherness and market it into an inauthentic, plastic pulp, so too has baseball. The game was at one time pure and genuine, and just as with most aspects of our lives, it is now thoroughly enshittified and over commercialized.

So yeah, this is what I’m doing as the world burns. Watching a Minor League Baseball game and trying to do what made me happy when all I wanted to do was spend five more minutes chatting with and hugging the people I love and had to leave JUST as Arkansas started to feel like home.

It was not a happy move. I cried more in that moving truck than I had in years watching the skylines of southern cities pass by that I had so many terrific, amazing, unforgettable memories in. Crying so hard my eyes hurt and I could barely see the road.

Everyone posts content online for likes, for that dopamine, but there came a point where I would sit there hoping that this tweet with 900 likes wouldn’t go any further, because after a thousand, the chuds started to hit the replies and I would just exasperatedly mute it and move on with my life.

Everything changed after that. My friends were drowned out by randos and non-followers that only knew me for the pizza moment, and all continuity from the community I had before was gone. Twitter’s algo now launched my tweets to the moon and put me on the radar of the worst fucking people on earth.

For real, the pizza was fun and a wacky slice of oddball Mariner history, but the afterpizza was the real story. And, just like with most things that go viral, it was fun for 48 hours until I got marketing folks from uninvolved companies in my inbox trying to commercialize the shit out of it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy the pizza happened! Simranjeet and I have stayed in contact and he even invited me to his and his wife’s baby shower in Anaheim which was coincidentally today. Thanks to my therapist for this insight—in Little Rock you can drive basically 3-6 hours in any direction and visit any number of amazing cities and towns that are home to fantastically unique ballparks, (sometimes) amazing food, and wonderful cultures. And you could do it cheap!

For 15 years I tweeted about a mostly terrible/sometimes wonderful baseball team and, when I could save a little bit of extra money, I would take a road trip to a Minor League ballgame or two and share my whole day with you.
