LEAVE NO SINGLE MOTHER BEHIND

Single mothers did not receive particular attention in the Beijing Declaration. Over the last 30 years their situation has not fundamentally changed, and many of them struggle to afford food and housing to this day, in part because they are single mothers.

Help us ensure that single mothers are not forgotten by international policy once again, and improve their situation over the next 30 years.

ISRA LEE: FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF SINGLE SUPERMOM
RENSE NIEUWENHUIS: RESEARCHER AND POLICY-EXPERT
MARIA STERN: EX-POLITICIAN AND FOUNDER OF THANKS DAY

Fascinating findings from Uppsala Immigration Lab: Sweden’s introduction program significantly improved women’s employment outcomes. SOFI researchers Linna Martén and Lillit Ottosson contributed to this study togehter with Cristina Bratu. Read more here: www.uu.se/en/centre/im...
Infographic from Uppsala Immigration Lab titled “Swedish introduction program improved women’s employment.” The graph illustrates changes in women’s employment rates in percentage points over nine years after receiving residence permits. Starting from the fifth year, an increase of approximately 10–15 percentage points is observed, sustained until the end of the follow-up period. Accompanying text explains that the 2010 reform strengthened financial incentives to participate in the two-year introduction program and facilitated quicker contact with the Public Employment Service. The study is based on data from 2009–2020 and conducted by Cristina Bratu, Linna Martén, and Lillit Ottosson.

New research featuring @pfallesen.bsky.social shows stark contrasts in how poverty persists across generations. In Denmark, strong welfare systems reduce poverty’s grip, while in the U.S., a high "poverty penalty" makes it harder for children to escape poverty. #sociology #poverty #research
