Over the summer, the intense public scrutiny of Professor Jason Arday was a painful reminder of the way that scrutiny is unequally applied in many domains, including science, to scrutinize and interrogate the competence and deservingness of, in particular, our Black colleagues and peers.

As part of Society Workshop, we've been summarizing key insights from social science research for the public. Here is one we completed a few months ago on youth gender diversity, the importance of rigorous evidence in policy, and its implications for gender-affirming care.

So trans kids just "grow out of it"? Our work, highlighted here by Society Workshop, suggests that the previous claims about desistance that have been normalized for years are incredibly unreliable

Do youth just "grow out of" their gender identities? The answer to this question has historically been based on a small number of data points in a handful of studies. A recent meta-analysis has called that evidence too preliminary. Here is a video summary of that research.

One of my favorite things to do is to catch up with our alumni from the summer internship program (www.summerpsych.com) we started in new haven, CT in 2017. 32 interns have passed through the program since that time, 7 are current PhD students, 2 are current/incoming faculty at universities.

We fund the program in 2026 and beyond through our activities at Society Workshop. If you want to help an undergraduate student become more immersed and engaged in social science research for societal good, consider helping us out! www.societyworkshop.org/get-involved

This summer, summer psychology interns will participate in two months of immersive research. The program started in 2017 in New Haven CT and has trained 32 interns across six cohorts in that time. At this time, 7 interns are current PhD students, and 2/3 have gone on to advanced degree programs.
infographic showing some statistics from the summer psych internship which has happened in two cities, with 6 cohorts, and 32 total interns. Overall 7 interns are current PhD students, 2 are current/incoming academic faculty, and 59% currently do research as part of their work. Of the training in the program, two in three interns went on to advanced degree programs and use their training right now.

Here's a Society Workshop report about using AI models to learn about a new area of knowledge (in this case the psych of inequality). My favorite part of this was when GEMINI referred to our research as "Kraussian" -- the first time it has been referred to in that way (except in my mind, perhaps).

We hope that a study like this can help people engaging with AI models become more wary of the risks. Certainly, there is a need to verify the information they produce--something that is hard to do when you are learning! Read our full report here: drive.google.com/file/d/1ULcL...

Fabrication was also a problem for both models, which was not easily recognized without expertise. Both models also defined the domain of research unnecessarily narrowly, which limited how people learning about the topic might interact with it in the future.

While both models helped locate influential and highly cited works related to the topic, they were both more limited when it came to developing deeper insights, coherent future research questions, and study designs.

In this case we examined how AI models would help knowledge seekers learn about "the psychology of inequality". We then verified the information generated by the models from our own expertise on this topic. Here is an infographic of what we found:

... of the uses of this technology. To this end, we conducted a case study of two AI models (GEMINI and Chat GPT) to determine their usefulness in developing early stage expertise on a particular knowledge area.

At K-12 schools and universities, students use these technologies in their learning. Researchers are finding new ways to use these technologies to speed up their research. At Society Workshop, we are interested in providing the public with information about some of the risks and benefits...

AI models can rapidly alter how people engage with the information around them. There is a lot of media and discourse about how that is good, and how it will make people more productive. There is also a lot of evidence about the risks to the environment, to learning, to intellectual property.

The work of science can, and must, extend beyond the hallways and offices of university settings. I am so excited about the possibilities of Society Workshop to engage with scientists and community members alike to bridge the gap and to make real the work that we care so much about.

Sometimes I feel like academic work is a poor fit for the moment. While the university is under threat, engagement with the public is not incentivized. Along with some friends, we started Society Workshop as a way to bring more social science to the public. www.societyworkshop.org
