Agree 100% with all of this. I think VAR worked better at the World Cup b/c the guys in the booth were from different countries and not mates with the guy on the pitch. Instant improvement if you do the same in England.

I watched a lot of NBA playoffs in the spring and I NEVER sensed reluctance to overturn a call because of pride. Maybe because there were 3 of them rather than just 1 guy whose authority must be protected at all costs. And when a bad call got overturned -- no shame for the one who missed it.

I'm not even sure they are insufficiently skilled -- it's really hard! But the truly toxic aspect of the old boy network is how they don't want to undermine their mates. Getting it wrong is real time and correcting it doesn't have to be a terrible thing!
