Strong rec for Hilary Spurling’s Handbook to AP’s Music of Time - extract below: in much use during current reread. Pennistone apparently first crops up in A Buyer’s Market + v briefly in The Kindly Ones
PENNISTONE, David
Unknown officer who expounds Alfred de Vigny's military philosophy to Jenkins on a night train journey of extreme discomfort in
1940. Tall, thin, rather distinguished, hook nose and fairish hair. Writing ‘something awfully boring about Descartes'. Subsequently identified as the supercilious young man with an orchid in his buttonhole at Milly Andriadis’ party ‘a thousand years before’.

Lovely piece by @mathewlyons.bsky.social inspired by going through his parents’ books mathewlyons.substack.com/p/the-librar...
We get a frisson - at least I do - when we hear someone speak about a book we know intimately ourselves - as if the depth and delicacy of our connection to the words it contains connects us to them also. The
web of words vibrates a little and we feel it, the pressure of another person's life, their thoughts and experiences humming through the threads and wires. So you heard it too, I think to myself.

It’s a block of council flats on Mill Lane beside the railway lines in West Hampstead, I think. They seem to be called Ellerton.
