We also talk about translation and the different adaptations of the Moomin stories.

Our guest Tomasz talks us through some of the great wealth of history the Moomins have with Poland, the interesting musical benefits of a planned economy and his own terror of the fuzzy felt #Groke as a child.
The two book volumes of the Polish complete Moomin stories. One is light red the other light teal. Both have simple designs with Moomin characters in white framed with pretty picture frames.

This guest episode is all about the Moomins in Poland!
The vinyl record of “Lato Muminkow”. A white square cover with a picture of Moomin Troll holding some colourful flowers on it with a red sun behind him and the track list written around him. And the black record, with a white central label in a plastic case beside the cover.

Valentina makes her own Moomin merch, like previous guest Mary did, and we've put pictures of all that on the social media for this episode.

We talk about the absence of #Moominpappa in the Flood, and the unequal ways in which the parents in these stories are treated. Also, some little gems from the German translation regarding #Sniff, or, as he is known in this story, the Little Creature.
The front cover of The Moomins and the Great Flood. A dark and messy watercolour showing a big Moomin like creature and a little Moomin like creature venturing into a dark forrest.

But never mind all that what about the episode that we have put out: Valentina has a unique pathway into the #Moomins. She experienced just one story: The Moomins and the Great Flood, as an audiobook as a child.
A photograph of Valentina's CD of the Moomins and the Great Flood in German. The CD case is mostly pink, with some dark purples. Moomin walks under the beam of a lamp, which is also a flower. The case credits Tove Jansson as the author, Barbara Auer as the narrator, and says that the adventure is suitable for children aged between 3 and 7 years old. In the bottom right is the logo of Eltern Family magazine, who may have curated and sold this collection of audio books.

I know it’s been a while since we’ve had an episode out. And last year we only put out two bonus episodes but as Granny Weatherwax, a none Moomin character close to both of our hearts might say: We aten’t dead!
Granny Weatherwax picks earwax from her ear wearing a witches hat stuck full of hat pins and holding four playing cards. Next to the quote: Find the story, Granny Weatherwax always said. She believed that the world was full of story shapes. If you let them, they controlled you. But if you studied them, if you found out about them… you could use them, you could change them…

This is a Christmas-adjascent bonus because I just can’t stop making Christmas specials (it’s a problem, or a feature, or a bug).
A fir tree decorated with shells, pearl necklaces, a top hat, a mirror and other things precious to the Moomin family. On top of it is a rose. In front of it is an oil lantern. Around it are gathered various little creatures eating food and enjoying the light and the prettiness. Behind the tree to the right under a table, partially covered by a tablecloth hide the Moomin family looking scared.

We talk about faithfulness in adaptation, the differences between the Polish and English translations, and being out on the raw shore of the Baltic sea. (This picture is of Hanna’s Polish editions of the books).
The full box set of Hanna’s Moomin chapter books from 2008. The style for these Polish editions is very colourful. Each book has a white background, the title in coloured letters at the bottom and then a large colour illustration filling the rest of the space.

I wrote this poem about my dad on the day of his cremation
Screen shot of a poem that reads:

Today there is snow on mountains you’ve never walked on
but a part of you is in that snow.

A part of you is in all snow.
A part of you is in all mountains.
You are in all my memories now,
whether you were there or not.

I am not on those mountains.
Your body will soon not be on this earth.
But I can see those mountains from here,
today is the first time I’ve seen them white.

It feels significant.

Your body will become ash and air and soil and so many other things.
Everything changes, but nothing ever goes away.
Even when we aren’t together we always also are.

Today there is snow on mountains you’ve never walked on
covering paths that I have walked without you.

But also today we walk through that snow together.
We know those paths so well.

I began walking with you
and you will walk with me always,

in the places I am and the places I am not,
in the world without and the world unseen.

It feels significant.
