Parts of the book kinda recall the Selecciones Ilustradas guys who’d contribute to Vampirella, in that you’ll get a bunch of panels with ‘cartooned’ figures and then BOOM, a really heavy, photo-referenced drawing of the same character… a LOT of ‘70s heavyweights get name-checked in another panel

The French women’s anthology Ah! Nana is also on display! That ceased publication in 1978… given the first issue of Rom, the photo ref used is probably from late ‘79, ‘80? Some of these covers are not ‘real,’ so the comics are probably a mix of what was already in the photo and deliberate shoutouts.

Idealized American comic book store as depicted by a shōjo manga artist in Star Clock Liddell (Yoshimi Uchida, 1982-83; Eng. edition 2026, Glacier Bay Books)
A handsomely dressed fellow poses plaintively before a rack of incongruently diverse comic books of various nations circa 1982. “Trapped… inside a dream…” he thinks.

From the opening movie to “70s-style Robot Anime Geppy-X,” a PS1 era side-scrolling shmup interrupted at regular intervals by scores of FMV clips (CG, anime and live-action) evoking a ‘lost’ super robot tv series. Remastered English translation in July…

He’s around 50, but a number of the Fremok artists have cultivated multilingual skills… IIRC both Yvan Alagbé and Dominique Goblet can speak English too.

I was very happy to attend and ask exactly one question at this Frédéric Coché event - I think his first ‘long’ interview in English…?? Much of it consists of Coché walking through each of his major works and explaining his whole deal, and it is therefore invaluable to admirers of this artist!

(In a way it’s like that one Furuya book where he put the gross art on uncut pages, so to see the art you have to take a blade to the book or rip it with your hands, symbolically ‘becoming’ the assailant…)

I think a critical element is the cover art to the Hollow Press edition, with a shadow falling on the women’s utopia… the shadow is positioned to be you, the reader holding the book. The assailant is never shown, because it is you doing this. You must untie the book to read it. You are guilty.

IIRC he’s said the intent was to “illustrate my feelings as a kid,” tho that does not necessarily mean it’s strictly autobiographical… certainly informed by his life.

I can’t comment on the accuracy from the Japanese, since my Japanese reading is very poor, and I don’t have a JP language edition anyway. It flows well in English. There is a production error on one page (205) where part of a panel gets garbled, but that may be an issue with the JP files, I dunno.

Big news, I impulse bought the “Memoire” version of Ys Oath in Felghana on sale; same game, but as a novelty they decided to have Adol talk. This is done *without* changing the text, however, so all the parts that narrate Adol’s actions now have him sorta talking over the text narrator. Kinda funny!

Hi, I have a long article up today about Kazuichi Hanawa, artist of grotesque, folkloric, metaphysical comics, sometimes all at once, who’s just had two books published in English: Red Night from Breakdown Press (which the article is mostly about) and Light of the Moon from The Mansion Press. ENJOY.
