Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026This is scary stuff. I will need a while to process this week. (and no, I don't buy the "AI will kill us all" hype) 010
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026For complex problems, both GPT 6 and Opus 5.5 seem to favour LBBD with a blackboard setup, BTW. I'd say that qualifies as advanced territory. Three years ago, ChatGPT was hallucinating papers about complex solver models (too bad I knew the claimed authors). Now they are implementing them. 110
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026If this development continues apace, then in a year or two you won't need an OR consultant anymore: describe your planning or scheduling problem in plain language, give the AI data, and it will write you a complete model for whatever solver engine it deems best. And I'll be out of work. 110
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Another week, and the project will be ready for benchmarking against my old engine. And it might win. 110
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026With minimal prompting, Opus 5.5 made real progress on the engine, improved solution quality enormously, and runtime by a factor of 10, found bugs in the code that Sonnet wrote and fixed them, and even pointed out a bug in my solver engine that it was using for reference. 110
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026This week, I switched to Opus 5.5, and picked up a project where the work with Sonnet had plateaued: writing a replacement for an older solver engine of mine for one standard optimisation problem. The last three days, I burned through a few hundred $$, courtesy of my employer. 110
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Last year, I switched to Claude. Sonnet 5 moved from junior to assistant. Still thrashing, but less frequently. Having GPT 4o write a complex algorithm required patience. With Sonnet 5, it became easier, but it still got stuck often, requiring expertise not found in books to guide the work. 110
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I've been using LLMs for three years now for non-production code. ChatGPT 3.5 was impressive as a language model, but risibly bad for programming. 4o started to become useful, like a junior assistant, but was prone to thrashing: piling patch on top of useless patch. Close supervision was required. 110
Snowman @snowman4.bsky.social · 25/09/2026This is the week the that I finally got scared that AI may take my job. Even half a year ago, I felt close enough to retirement that this wouldn't happen: I'm a specialised senior developer with a PhD in optimisation. That niche was safe, I thought. 110
