Thanks! Just bought this book in the CERN shop which I'm enjoying.

AWE. Thats what I felt at CERN today. Awe at the brilliance of human beings, our ability to collaborate on vast projects and our endless curiosity, and also awe at the magnificence of the universe and all the weird tiny things in it. I definitely needed this.
A snapshot of the Atlas particle detector at CERN- a massive shiny silver multilayered cylinder about 5 storeys tall. The Synchrocyclotron- the first particle accelerator at CERN- which began operating in 1957. ELISA: a small particle accelerator in a darkened room in the exhibition area at CERN- which is able to tell what things are made of by emitting a Proton beam, and is used for the study of objects such as paintings and frescoes.

I'm working out in Switzerland at the moment. Having a pretty stunning time. Here's a few from last week's expedition.
Alpine Toadflax, tiny purple flowers with wild bright orange stamens, nestling amongst the limestone scree. Last light behind the mountains, and orange glow pierces clouds and the deep blue of the land. The Cabane du Plan Neve, a stone built mountain hut with jolly red and white Swiss flags and a huge grey cliff face behind.

Letter sent to my MP outlining my concern about the role of British bases in the war against Iran, and the escalating threats coming from the White House. @irenecampbellmp.bsky.social
Dear Irene Campbell

I am writing as one of your constituents to express my deep concern about the rapidly unfolding situation in the Middle East.

While I welcome instances where the UK Government has shown independence in its approach to the United States, I remain very concerned about reports that UK bases and infrastructure may be being used to support US military action against Iran. This raises serious ethical and legal questions, and I worry about the risk of the UK becoming complicit in actions that could lead to significant civilian harm. The recent escalation in rhetoric and military activity is deeply alarming. Statements suggesting the destruction of a nation or its people are profoundly troubling, and I believe they must be met with clear and united opposition from the UK and its NATO allies. At a time of heightened global tension, measured leadership and a commitment to international law are more important than ever. This conflict will not only impact the people of the Middle East, but also has far-reaching global consequences. As your constituent, I feel distressed and fearful about the direction events are taking.

I would therefore ask that you raise these concerns with the relevant ministers and advocate for a UK position that prioritises de-escalation, diplomacy, and the protection of civilian life.

Thank you for your time and attention. I would appreciate any information you can provide on the Government’s current position.

Yours sincerely,
Lucy Wallace

Happy New Year! Let's hope its a good one. More peace, more empathy, less climate change and not so much bombing people, please. Nuis hopes that the year will have plenty of sandy beaches where he can dig holes and has started as he means to go on. Wishing everyone the very best. ❤️

A bit of solstice cheer from Arran. The "Christmas roses" in my garden are blooming, as is the gorse and more importantly the ivy. The sun didn't show it's face today but a faint glow appeared on the horizon at midday. It may be dark but there are points of light to hold on to.

Travelling across Scotland today. Made it to Glasgow where I'm waiting for a bus. Absolute chaos at Buchanan bus station, but this is now a stan account for the brave young woman who is yelling out bus and stand numbers at the top of her lungs.
View of Arran from the ferry this morning. Mountains on the horizon, fluffy white clouds strewn accross blue skies and blue sea too.

Absolutely love alder. A lone surviving alder in Glen Rosa was the inspiration behind my logo. It's now on its last legs, but happily, grazing has been reduced just in time for saplings to spring up around it. I hope that in the future, these young trees will help restore life to the Rosa Burn.

Growing strawberries for the first time this year and am astonished by how amazing and delicious they are (way better than shop ones)- plus easy! My main learning point has been to pick them a day before they ripen and then ripen them on a windowsill- stops slugs from getting them. 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓

Today I was out with these lovely folk from across the pond. 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 We spent the morning exploring historic Lochranza, with wildlife/geology thrown in, then headed into the wilds of Glen Catacol after a delicious lunch at the Sandwich Station. As you can see, there were no midges to bother us today! 🌬😁

Away on the ferry, always a bit sad... after a busy few days at work here on Arran. Mostly writing work for TGO, but managed to squeeze in a couple of runs with doggo and a day out with Cunninghame @ramblersscotland.bsky.social who are on Arran this weekend. They picked a fine few days!

A little moment of fascination for me while walking the dog on the beach this afternoon. A crab exoskeleton, recently vacated, which I found floating in the shallows. Crabs shed their hard shell when they grow, and it becomes too tight, forming a new, soft one underneath before they emerge.
The open exoskeleton of a crab floating lifelessly in shallow sea water with a sandy bottom. The tip of my welly and some seaweed are visible in the bottom right corner. The same exoskeleton, this time fished out of the water and sitting on a rock, opened up to reveal the interior that the crab recently inhabited. The same exoskeleton on the rock. This time folded shut, to show the carapace, and reveal the crabs' identity as a common shore crab.

Looking for advice/experienced opinion. A block of scrubby woodland has been destroyed in the last 24 hours on the shore. Not sure who by. There would definitely have been birds nesting here, but impossible to prove now. Where does the law stand on this? Can a contractor/landowner plead ignorance?
