Glad to see this piece out! In it, we trace the explosion of HOLC redlining studies in public health research over recent years and propose that scholars widen their focus to include some of the myriad other discriminatory processes that have generated racial health inequities.
Articles About Redlining by the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC), by Discipline: United States, 2001–2023. Output increases substantially post-2016, especially in the public health literature.Table showing select other racialized processes affecting neighborhoods that scholars could focus on in addition to HOLC "redlining"How and Why Does Redlining Matter for Present-Day Health? Critical Perspectives on Causality, Cartography, and Capitalism

Abstract:
Recent years have seen an explosion of public health research on associations between historical redlining maps created by a US government agency, the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC), and present-day outcomes. Yet precisely how and why HOLC’s surveys help us understand the underpinnings of present-day racial inequities remains unclear.

We apply an interdisciplinary perspective to assess the contributions and limitations of this literature, particularly with regard to causal mechanisms and theoretical explanations. While research often frames HOLC redlining as a measure of structural racism that directly shapes present-day outcomes, we look instead to racial capitalism to understand how and why racialized housing policies are implemented.

We argue that the HOLC maps represent symptoms, not causes, of systematic disinvestment in Black communities, that redlining was not produced by the federal government in isolation but was shaped by public‒private collaboration and infused with capitalist logics, and that redlining interacted with many other forms of racialized housing dispossession to shape present-day riskscapes. We conclude by offering conceptual and methodological recommendations for public health researchers, including suggestions for data sources other than HOLC maps.

Looking forward to talking about redlining and interwar spatial data science at Texas A&M tomorrow. Stop by if you’re in the area!
Poster advertising talk:

What were "redlining" maps for?
Race and the interwar cartographies of a new science

An expanding body of research has sought to connect the Home Owners' Loan Corporation's (HOLC) “redlining" maps from the 1930s to a wide array of present-day social injustices in the United States. The assertion has been that these federally produced maps helped entrench emerging co-geographies of racial segregation and value that reproduce racial-spatial inequities. However, the historical record is more complicated. In this talk, I re-evaluate what these maps and their accompanying field notes can (and cannot) tell us about the inter-generational transmission of racial inequality. I propose that HOLC's “redlining" documents should not be read as literal prescriptions about where the agency believed real estate investments should and should not be steered but as part of a larger, state-backed spatial data science initiative that was about imposing order and predictability onto the housing landscape.

📢New article out in EPD: Society & Space! In it, I situate residential segregation within the logics of capital accumulation and think through the ways it has structured the uneven geographies of value & anti-value in the US 🔗 journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1...
An outpouring of critical sub/urban scholarship in recent years has explored the historical and ongoing linkages between race, real estate, and space in the United States. Much of this literature has positioned residential segregation as crucial for structuring the geographies of capital accumulation, highlighting how segregation delimits places for extraction and dispossession. In this essay, I build from the foundations this literature lays by bringing together Charles Abrams’ concept of “the racist theory of value” (RTV) and David Harvey’s notion of “anti-value” to illuminate the centrality of racialized devaluation in the accumulation process in the US. Specifically, I contend that the RTV, in its role in entrenching residential segregation and collapsing race and value together in space, has helped to demarcate and contain the devaluation that capitalism requires in Black residential spaces. As a key innovation for real estate capital to manage the geographies of (anti-)value...

By the 1920s, South Dakota had become a U.S. state, and was a popular destination for road trippers visiting the Black Hills National Forest, Wind Cave National Park, and Needles Highway.
115) In 1923,1261127) the Secretary of the South Dakota State Historical Society, Doane Robinson, who would come to be known as the "Father of Mount Rushmore" [171[28] learned about the
"Shrine to the Confederacy", a project to carve the likenesses of Confederate generals into the side of Stone Mountain, Georgia that had been underway since 1915.115] Seeking to boost tourism to South Dakota, Robinson began promoting the idea of a similar monument in the Black Hills,117] representing "not only the wild grandeur of its local geography but also the triumph of western civilization over that geography through its anthropomorphic representation."[29]

This is one of the most Florida politics things that has ever happened theintercept.com/2023/11/09/o...
Miller and Search ran for office pledging to roll back a property tax increase that had been foisted on residents to fund future development in The Villages. They argued that if the developer, which also owned the local newspaper and radio station, wanted to expand the size of the retirement community, they should do so with their own money.

Shortly after Miller and Search were sworn in, the local prosecutor launched an investigation into whether they had violated Florida “sunshine laws” around transparency and open government.

There’s been a heated debate in the oped pages of The Villages newspaper for a week now on whether or not Publix should allow dogs and Jacqueline has had enough
here, which doesn't mean anything, because Florida is a disgrace in every single aspect.
Regarding the person who said dogs are disgusting, he or she should take a good look at the mirror to see who's really disgusting. A person who doesn't like animals is a sick individual. Animals are beautiful, innocent
