Alcohol-fermented. Roguishly handsome. Part-time menace. Serving cold facts and dank memes with a wink and a sigh. Unfiltered, unbothered, and occasionally brined. The Original Snarky Gherkin.

Farewell Sam Neill. A migrant boy from Northern Ireland who became one of New Zealand’s great actors, one of Australia’s adopted treasures, and one of the finest screen presences this part of the world has ever shared. substack.com/@snarkygherk...

We keep being told coal is the cheap and reliable. Bit of duct tape, throw in public money, and call the rattling “baseload”. Ageing coal is breaking down more, derating more, and increasingly like an old Commodore with a cracked radiator. Mechanical denialism on full display.

PHON polling is getting interesting. A lot of voters seem happy with the protest, but not the full policy offering. Immigration anxiety lands. But monoculture? UN withdrawal? Defunding SBS? Easier sackings? That's cooked. It's less revolution and more like a protest vote with a policy hangover.

My coffee thoughts on Albo’s podcast answer that is now apparently a national scandal. Cringe? Yes. Constitutional crisis? No. The real comedy is Barnaby Joyce reporting for duty as Commissioner for Decorum. I’d have stuck to cucumber innuendo. Standards matter.

Well, this episode has aged like a bottle of wine left beside a political fire. In the latest Open View, we took a look at the strange ecosystem of political preference harvesting. Monica Smit is reportedly furious that someone has registered Reignite Democracy. youtu.be/9re1Jxjk6N8

Australia has built community clubs around machines designed to make communities poorer. My latest looks at pokies, gambling harm, club dependence and the strange national bargain where cheap schnitzels are funded by financial distress. Read and share: open.substack.com/pub/snarkygh...

There's a tremendous amount of nonsense floating around Victoria's Big Build cost blow-outs and alleged corruption. I try to breakdown what we do know, what we don't know and what is nonsense. open.substack.com/pub/snarkygh...

*Tap Tap* Hello? I really need to figure this platform out properly and give it some much-needed love. So, consider this the Gherk cautiously entering the chat, looking around and pretending I know where everything is.

First speeches matter. They tell you who a leader is talking to... and who they’re not. A closer look at Angus Taylor’s opening move and why it may have quietly pushed moderate voters further away. substack.com/@snarkygherk...

Absolute Aussie legend Colin Hay... immigrant and co-writer of Down Under, has told March For Australia to rack off. The song’s about multiculturalism, unity, and joy. Not for weaponising by galahs in flag capes yelling about “real Aussies”. “Go write your own song. Leave mine alone.”

Remember... the same media apparatus gaslighting you into believing One Nation is “surging”… …also spent half the year flogging the fantasy that Peter Dutton was on track to be our next Prime Minister, during the lead up to the last election, only to serve up the worst defeat since Federation.

A deeper look at Trump, Venezuela, and the Nixon logic MAGA supporters don't want to admit is back in fashion. Really keen for feedback as I fumble through this new platform... if there’s appetite, I’ll keep making more. open.substack.com/pub/snarkygh...

Snarky Gherkin was unpublished by Facebook for “impersonation.” Apparently being a cartoon pickle with opinions is too much for the algorithm. Appeal lodged. Updates soon. #FreeTheGherkin #SatireIsNotImpersonation #Zucc’d

Cookers claiming vaccines change your baby’s ethnicity because of “foreign DNA” from “baby parts.” If your kid pops out looking different, it’s not Jerry Springer time... it’s Pfizer, apparently. Cooked beyond repair.

I've been tagged this more times than I can count. Upon further inspection, it appears they're based on VAERS database which are just self reported with no verification.

Judith from Mosman is spending $500k to stop four-storey apartments near public transport. Not to fix the housing crisis, just to keep it out of her postcode. The problem isn’t migrants. It’s people like Judith deciding who gets to live near a train and who gets to commute for two hours.

Immigration isn’t the cause of the housing crisis. Dwellings have grown faster than population. The issue isn’t how many people we have... it’s that housing is treated as an asset, not shelter. Blame the system, not the people moving in.

Slurping my Thursday morning coffee, a thought occurred... The people marching this Sunday are the same ones who, not long ago, were swallowing livestock medication to fend off a virus they screamed didn’t exist. Same logic, reheated leftovers, different weekend.
