Had a small trial game of Warhammer 4th edition tonight. The river trolls engaged the slayers and Ruglud and his lads engaged the dwarf warriors. The orc boys charged the Longbeards who promptly skedaddled a roll of 12...

I think this will work for my night goblins; a half inverted theme with rather bright clothing and a dark, high-contrast "heraldry". Well, regardless of whether it works or not this is now the chosen theme, so ya boo sucks to you, Fritzy. 💁😅

As the ancient Greeks said: "Fucking finally!". My take on my old stripped Ruglud's armoured orcs who according to lore picked up their heavy armour and crossbows from Chaos dwarves. I spent too much money on 15 extra figures, and they were a lot of work for a dodgy result, but here we are... 💁

I might do some night goblins and I've tried out some possible alternative themes. 🤔 All black is traditional, but also mildly boring, and grey is still very muted but slightly more visible. I do like the blue hood, though. The dinner plate is the shield attachment.

Behold! I have taken a step into the 13th century and acquired for myself this wondrous pincer of vellum. Verily, a most curious contrivance!

Barring the banner my 24 Karak Norn dwarf warriors are done. The flock is a trial with Noch 8460 Medium grey sawdust for a quick "cave floor" look as I'm picturing cave wars against goblins and whatnot, but it also works quite ok on my more speckled terrain mats. Good enough for government work... 💁

I tried two night goblins from white primer and 99% contrast paints; one in Black Templar with some shading, the other in a heavy coat of Basilicanum grey which quite obviously becomes a little brighter. I might use both. No further washes used on these, but overall quite happy with the concept.

And FINALLY I have finished the last of Ruglud's lads! 🙄🤦 I need to paint 5 more shields, then I can start varnishing etc. I love them as a youth memory, but overall they are pretty horrible sculpts, but then again I'm very spoiled by modern 3D prints... 💁

It might be a bit sad that first the 5th printer I buy is a 2D one, but I'm at least in the printing business again after getting violently separated from my office printer... 🥳

First 7 of my Karak Norn-themed dwarves! I have intentionally kept the poses and colour variations to a minimum to get somewhere, but with a shield with a homemade transfer with an absolutely awesome motif or other they should look ok.

Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
A very simplistic trial (with no actual metals) of a Karak Norn theme for my possibly future dwarves. Loud, bright and the white primer is half the result. 👍 I'm struggling with my motivation again and I need to cut as many corners as possible. I'll also probably go for homemade shield transfers.

Only the musician left to paint of Ruglud's armoured orcs. Plus shields, bases, multiple layers of varnish etc etc... 🙄 I also guess the champion shouldn't have picked up that weird-glowing sword, but "wat's dat to yous, ya runty git!?"

I hate gluing uneven parts so I normally assemble in 3D before printing. Shields are problematic to support and you create a lot of "behind" to reach into, unless you prime black. So, I have successfully reinvented a 40+ year old technology using a peg and a hole in the shield. I are smartness... 😇

Another paint session with my best friend Christopher today. Not as concentrated this time as he was feeling poorly but I could at least a) crush his feeble attempt with my own fabulous orc b) demonstrate the use of a wash.

Plodding on with my old "Ruglud's armoured orcs"; 14 "done", barring bases, shields, multiple layers of varnish and flocking... 🙄 Ruglud's lads took their armour from Chaos knights, and THEY looked pretty psychedelic back in the days... 😅

Although the difference is tragically small given 30+ years between the painting efforts I'm going to stick my neck out and claim it looks a little better now... Regardless he's drafted to lead two battalions of halberdiers and a steam tank against the enemies of the Empire. Possibly victoriously.

A blinding success! A very happy little shit, and the mum in question was shocked by the level of concentration, but even she relaxed and locked in completely... I think this will happen again. 😅

I'm joined tomorrow by my best friend Christopher, 7 y.o. (a.k.a. The little shit) for some figure painting. As it's his first time I have mustered some old, unused figures as well as printed a few oversized ones. Given the risk of spilled contrast paints I think cheap crafts paint will have to do.

Apart from the shield on his back I have probably finished Ruglud. He has of course made sure to get the best Chaos warrior armour for himself. A rather doubtful mix of contrast and regular paints on a rather horrible sculpt, but at least he is keen to lead my orc army into the fray...

Finally returning to the excellent dwarves from Old Realm Forge for a thane leader of my small army. Mainly just contrasts and washes, with some fake ermine on the cloak. I need to paint up Ruglud himself and an Empire general, then I can try a very small 2 vs. 2 in TOW.
0282
Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 30/06/2026
Just a quick trial of the concept. The shield needs a wash and a shave, but both size and insane chaos colours work for me.

Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Am I up in the middle of the night painting weirdass, old-school Chaos shields? Maybe. But I don't see how that's any of your business... 😤
0121
Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 28/06/2026
Finally giving my rescued Ruglud's lads a go. The sculpts are pretty crappy and shallow so I opted for very simple painting, with the plate in pure silver with contrast in top. They took the heavy armour of Chaos warriors so the plate and shields can be in all kinds of crazy oldhammer Chaos colours.

24 unnecessarily gaudy orc archers done. I generally speaking hate the flocking stage, even if I never use anything else than PVA and my own flock mix, but I will have to get that done soon, also for the shielded melee orcs finished earlier.

7 orc shields for Ruglud's lads, composed of various free shields and emblems. Homemade checkered patterns on the round ones, as a guidance for my "freehand"...

01:55 and I'm looking for suitably orcy shields for Ruglud's lads. My initial idea to create fancy shield transfers has proven more difficult than expected, especially as my traitor friend's printer is broken. 😠 So, back to something hand-painted with embossed designs, preferably less mainstream. 🙄

First SP game in 6+ months, with units akin to reality; 2 battalions with skirmisher support converging on a small mission where the world's worst spy Red Robford is rumoured to be recuperating from the numerous grievous wounds he took when being viscously gunned down by the murderous French...

My "recreated" Ruglud's armoured orcs are all cleaned up and based (with one imposter figure; Harboth from the archer unit) to make a 24-orc unit. 3D printed crossbows and shields to be added, hopefully with some cool homemade transfers. Ruglud himself freed up as the very keen army general.

Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
I have "invested" in 5 more of Ruglud's armoured orcs, bringing the unit up to 24 and freeing Ruglud himself up as the general. Into the acetone they go, and then it's time to get cracking on these. Totally worth the money, who needs food anyway... 🙄

Assembling stone trolls, as one tends to do on Sunday mornings. Due to fixed arms they are somewhat difficult to fit inside the base perimeter so they don't touch each other with the weapons, but I'll work on the poses there.

Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
I'm afraid I have committed two more river trolls. As usual any actual skill was substituted with contrast paints and uncontrolled chimpanzee screaming.

Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 01/06/2026
I'm blatantly going to call this a pretty good replacement, given that I need to chonk it a little for durability. I'll use a thin layer of PVA later to reinforce the join.

What I should be doing: Prince2 Agile certification What I'm doing: prototyping a replacement blade for one of Ruglud's armoured orcs.

Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 30/05/2026
Partial progress; the printed bases work at least. There's no question that TOW's switch to the larger bases should have been the standard from day one... It'll be more work with the 2nd hand ones as they had their slotta inserts removed, apart from some stumps, so they'll need careful glueing.

Printing replacement crossbows for Ruglud's lads. TOW 30x30 mm slottabases printing in the FDM...

Sometimes old plastic is good; the bases on my 35+ y.o. Ruglud's armoured orcs just snapped in half, and the shields and crossbows came off like they were held by spit. Into the acetone they go, and then I'll see what can be done with them. I'll give them new shields, possibly with fancy transfers.

Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
I had to visualize the two "armies" I have . As I'm re-basing for TOW from Midgard there's no obvious plan point wise, but the "good guys" are probably playable with the addition of leaders, while the "bad guys" need more actual troops, either units or filling out. Orc archers on the way at least.
1110
Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
Finished off the first six orc archers; just the usual contrast paint atrocity. Six individual poses plus command, but I'll batch-paint them according to clothing, much easier than the 24 individual fighty orcs... 🤦

"Oh great, they have a mother-in-law." "What, down here in the mines of Moria? Surely not!?" "Look for yourself..." "Oh bloody hell!" Another case of inadvisably applied contrast paints; halfway through it I also remembered that I can't paint, but overall happy with the result.

As the old Babylonians said: "Fucking finally!". After two failed prints using supplied pre-hollowed bodies which then broke as eggshells there are finally solid-printed river trolls. I prefer to 3D assemble and then hollow, but the arms and heads are so chonky I got undrainable cavities.

I have gotten the last of my replacement Ruglud's armoured orcs; the champion Uludd. Now I just need to strip them all, re-base them on printed 30x30 mm bases and unfortunately paint them. Given the cost for these 10 extra original figures this will be my summer vacation...
1121
Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
Being laid off and heading towards a mass starvation event the only reasonable way forward was to pay with both my livers for these Ruglud's armoured orcs to complement my old ones. I'll print a blade, shields and crossbows. Including a champion on its way I'll have a unit of 20 as a summer project.
0110
Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 10/05/2026
A very slow old-school orc project (well over 3 months) due to shitty life, and me (a certified idiot) creating 24 individuals to paint. 🤦🤦🤦 Very happy with the result but any future units will be mono-pose, as god intended... Now I just need to find the motivation for the basing. 🙄
2482
Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
Re-basing my undead from Midgard to Warhammer TOW (which I will not play either...). With the few Empire and dwarves painted earlier, and with the existing Undead, along with some ongoing and upcoming greenskins, I might get two sides together for at least one game before binning it all.
1151
Smygpainter (Pelle) @smygpainter.bsky.social · 18/04/2026
11 of Ruglud's armoured orcs might be another restoration project. I think the box had 16 so lost 5 over the years. Given the plastic shields I don't think I can strip the enamel paint, so possibly just another repaint on top. I should be able to fill them out with 3D printed ones for a full unit.
