Bay View High School students visited a Chemistry lab @smuhalifax.bsky.social to make... worms! (When sodium alginate is placed in a solution of calcium ions, long polysaccharide molecules clump together and form an even bigger polymer that is too big to stay in the solution which = “worms.”)

Residual solid from a chemical reaction done in ethanol. Evaporation of the filtrate gave rise to these colorless crystals in the yellow oil. This photo was taken using a polarized microscope at a Saint Mary's University X-ray facility, giving rise to the intense colours.

Faculty of Science Photo Contest Winners: Month by month we'll display each winner from our 2025 Calendar. The April image is “Apollonian Circle Packing” by Dr. James Rickards, Mathematics and Computing Science. Pick up your copy of the calendar at the Science Advising Centre (Atrium 301).
An Apollonian circle packing is a fractal-like arrangement of circles that are mutually tangent. Remarkably, in certain cases, all circle curvatures are integers. In this picture, the three largest circles have curvatures 28, 33, and 40. The circles are coloured based on their remainder when the curvature is divided by 24.

Congratulations to SMU athlete Ian Gaudet, who won a gold medal in at the PanAm Games in Santiago, Chile! Ian and teammate Simon McTavish finished the 500m K2 race with a time of 1:30.45, ahead of competitors from Argentina and the U.S.. Ian is in his 3rd year of a BSc in Geology.
